Overview

About the property

Very private and serene setting; Large lakefront lot and spacious dock

This lakefront cabin and lot is a charming and rustic setting, perfect for a vacation, honeymoon, or weekend get-away. Located about 20 minutes from Camden, the setting is serene and peaceful. The water is lovely and clean - ideal for swimming and fishing from the dock. The house accommodates two people. There are 2 bedrooms with a queen size bed and a double bed, living room, fully stocked kitchen, dining area, small bathroom, and magnificent front porch. There is a studio room with a single bed; there is also a fold out single bed. There is a spacious deck with built-in benches and posts for securing boats. There is a 'party' shed located right on the water's edge for grilling and relaxing. Picnic tables are abundant in the party shed and in the yard. There is also a hammock for naps on the water's edge.

The former owner, Jak Smyrl, was one of South Carolina's most noteworthy artists. He worked at the 'State Newspaper' for many years, designing cartoons, and bringing humor into people's homes with his varied features. His drawing table is still in the studio. The McKissick Museum, South Caroliniana Library, and the Camden Arts Center have all held exhibitions of Mr. Smyrl's work. Mr. Smyrl was recognized for his contributions to the State by the South Carolina Legislature. Mr. Smyrl's great love of life - and all of his fascinating interests and hobbies - is evident in the house. Here you will find art work, books, and charm galore!

This cabin is comfortable, homey, and an artist's paradise! The small deck (off the screened-in porch) is 'furnished' with one of Mr. Smyrl's hand crafted tables and benches and is the perfect place for drawing and sketching.

Here, you see will see a great variety of bird life. There are numerous aquatic birds, song birds, owls, etc. The large lot is fenced with a split rail fence so there is abundance of privacy.

The water is clean so swimming off the end of the dock is excellent. Throw in a line and catch bream, catfish, etc.

Please note that boats must be launched from the public marina which is two or three miles from the house (by land). You may find that the gate is too narrow for your boat trailer. If that's the case, boat trailers must be stored elsewhere. Also, there is no electricity on the dock or in the party shed on the water. This is due to lake levels that sometimes rise in winter time.

We cannot guarantee lake levels. You may check the Duke Power Company Lake Wateree website for current information of depth of water.

You will find a notebook on the kitchen counter that contains information about the house. Please note that we charge a 70.00 cleaning fee which must be left in cash or check upon departure. Also, renters must remove all household trash from the house upon departure.

Check in is 3:00 p.m. Check out is 11:00 a.m.

About Scott Criste

My husband and I own several properties which we rent as vacation rentals. We like peace and quiet and unique places. We are both native South Carolinians and have traveled nearly every square inch of the state. We think the Lake Wateree property is just about the best vacation spot on the face of the earth!

Why Scott Criste chose South Carolina

This cabin was build of reclaimed timbers from a 100+ year-old farmhouse. Decorated with antiques, art work, and charming vintage pieces, you'll feel like you've stepped back to a slower and more peaceful pace of life. You can see the lake from nearly every window in the house. The owners enjoy cooking so the kitchen is fully stocked with lots of extras. Dine inside or on the screened-in porch. Here, you will find all the comforts of home in a really beautiful setting.

What makes this cottage unique

Swimming is terrific. Take your own canoe over to one of the three islands nearby. Enjoy a watermelon in the party shed! There is a wonderful vintage porch glider on the front porch. Enjoy its squeak while you watch the shore birds!

For your convenience, there is wireless internet and a landline phone. There is a large television set w/DISH t.v. service.

Guestbook comments from the manager

My husband and I (ages 28 and 30) stayed at this awesome waterfront Lake Wateree cottage April 3, 4, and 5. We have stayed at many places, on lakes, seashores, etc. and we found that this house has a very special charm.

The house is built of old timbers with wide plank hardwood floors. There are 2 bedrooms with very comfortable queen size beds and a studio room with 2 single beds. Art work of all types and techniques is everywhere!

The kitchen was very complete so meal preparation was a joy. My husband and I enjoy cooking so we prepared several delicious meals with all the utensils, etc. necessary. The screened porch is great! We had nice April weather so spent Saturday fishing

from the dock. We were able to leave the sliding door opened all day so a lovely breeze blew throughout the house. The water was gorgeous with ripply waves. We saw several turtles swim by. The lot is very pretty.

In fact, I picked a bunch of eucalyptus from the tree for the centerpiece on the table.

The house is furnished with antique and contemporary pieces. I especially liked the treasures tucked here and there - antique miniature pencil sharpeners, cloisonné boxes, etc. It was fun just looking at everything in the house!

This is a simple yet magnificent place to spend a vacation. We are returning in July and looking forward to another vacation at the lake.

The owners were very friendly and helpful and answered all of our questions readily.

I highly recommend this house for people who wish to have peace, quiet, and privacy in a beautiful setting.

Perfectly Charming ! Very cozy !

Between the back porch and the dock we didn't spend much time in the cabin ,with that being said, we wish the yard was a little more maintained. Other than that a Perfect getaway with great fishing from the dock !

I was born in Camden and grew up going to Lake Wateree. It is good to know that some places have remained almost the same. Love this place!
