A peaceful and picturesque retreat awaits you at the West Wing on Blanche. We are on the north shore and enjoy southern exposure overlooking the pristine waters of Lake Blanche. Across these waters you will find undeveloped shorelines and secluded sandy beaches in the wilderness environment bordering Glendalough State Park. This peaceful shoreline is located on some of the most remote parts of the park. It's a wonderful, inspiring place to beachcomb, kayak or just kick back at the water’s edge. You can relax, watch eagles fly overhead, see fish jumping, catch a glimpse of a deer coming down for a cool drink, enjoy the sweet smell of honeysuckle and listen to loons sing out to each other as the sunset colors fill the sky. The West Wing on Blanche is the perfect place to slow life’s pace while you reconnect with yourself, loved ones or enjoy a rejuvenating couple’s get away.
The West Wing on Blanche is committed to providing a wholesome, mellow environment that leaves guests with a memorable experience. The 'West Wing' is on the west side of a large lakeside retreat which spans three lake lots and is closed off from the other side; much like a beautiful twin-home at the lake. The other side is not available for rent which further enhances your experience and sense of privacy during your stay. The West Wing does not lend itself to a resort-type environment with rental cabins and constant turnover of strangers all around. Crowds of visitors, loud parties or other disruptive activities that interfere with the tranquil experience the West Wing on Blanche was created for are not allowed. These high standards, maximum of six guests (four of which may be adults-renters/visitors combined), the rustic ambiance of our accommodations and all the beauty the West Wing offers lends itself to an elite level vacation experience at a very affordable price.
Our lake country retreat overlooks the lake and has been newly renovated while holding on to it's rustic charm of bygone years. The West Wing has a fully equipped kitchen with new appliances, furnishings and plenty of modern amenities to enhance your stay.
The West Wing is a rustic setting that has maintained the lake cabin feel with style and modern ameneties. We have a large open floor plan for the living area, dining and kitchen. The great room area also has two very comortable fold-out futons. Step up into the sunroom overlooking the lake. From there you enter the master suite which is finished off in natural colors, wood, and rustic decor.
We have a maximum limit of 6 guests (four of which may be adults-renters/visitors combined) at the West Wing at any given time. Though some resorts have higher limits, often with less square footage, we wish to provide an elite style stay at an affordable price for people that wish to avoid the crowds and relax in style. It is for this reason that we provide a mellow place free of crowds, loud parties and groups of non-guests who come and go. So kick back and enjoy your stay!
You'll instantly feel relaxed at the West Wing in our clean, comfortable lake home setting. We provide bath towels, sheets, blankets, pillows, utensils, dishes, pots and pans — all the amenities you need for a relaxing retreat.
•Queen size memory foam bed in the master bedroom
•Large bedroom 2 has many windows, new furniture and queen bed.
•Two very nice fold out futons (each double bed size) in the great room

This was our 4th consecutive summer vacation to Western Minnesota lake country. We love the lake life, and we've enjoyed every place we've stayed including a couple other VRBO lake houses and one resort. But none of them was so compelling we wanted to come back. Until NOW. We have found our spot, and we can't wait to return.
To start, the home itself is lovely. It feels more like a primary residence than a vacation rental. It is designed and appointed with quality and care. There was more than enough space for our family of 4 + grandpa. We made several meals in the big open kitchen, although whenever possible, we cooked on the gas grill ate outside on the patio.
Speaking of the patio, that was our happy spot. Sitting at the table with a coffee in the morning, or glass of wine in the evening, enjoying the breeze off the lake, watching the boats go by, and hanging out with Tim's amazing hunting dogs Duke and Jet. Oh Duke and Jet, my daughter (6) still talks about them like old friends. We don't have dogs, so this was a new experience for her, and these dogs are so well trained and mild mannered that she couldn't get enough.
Blanche is a great lake. With half of it bordered by Glendalough State Park it was generally not too busy, which was perefect. We used the kayaks several times and rented the fishing boat for the week and went fishing at least once a day and caught lots of fish. And the location is ideal for heading to Zorbas on Ottertail, going to turtle races in Perham or shopping/dining in Battle Lake. Not to mention Glendalough (where we had a great bike ride). Can't beat it!
But what really makes the West Wing special is the host. Tim is a super congenial guy with loads of great stories and helpful tips. He went out of his way to make sure we were not just comfortable, but having a great time. His advice on spots to fish, places to go, things to see was super helpful. But he really went above and beyond. One night he took us on a pontoon tour around the lake, which was epic. And when he found out my son (10) is a speed demon, he borrowed a friends tube and took him tubing. My son will never forget it!
The West Wing was perfect for our family getaway, and I can't recommend it more highly.
Had a fabulous time on Lake Blanche. This was a very cozy, relaxing place. Tim was a fabulous host who was always available if needed. Totally enjoyed the peaceful, beautiful lake and accommodations. Would highly recommend to anyone!!!
My husband and I spent 4 nights at "A Piece of Heaven on Earth," and it was a wonderful vacation. The cottage is charming and comfortable. We had friends stay with us two of the nights which worked out well with the two nicely furnished bedrooms, and we made the one bath work, although we would suggest another bath be added to make the stay even more over the top.
Tim is delightful and made sure we had all we needed. The lawn and gardens are beautiful and the patio and view of the lake is perfect. We rented the fishing boat and had great luck fishing (caught fish on 99% of the casts!). Tim was helpful in showing us the best places to fish. Make sure you have him show you how to start the boat motor. We also enjoyed the kayaks and the nearby golf course. We would highly recommend this fabulous property on Blanche Lake!
Tim was very welcoming. he introduced us to a clean, beautifully maintained hide away. It was just what I needed at the time...a quiet little paradise; yet it was equipped to give any family with children the activities of beach fun, kayaking and fishing.
We would like to thank Tim and Kathy for a wonderful stay on Blanche Lake. The cabin was extremely clean and very roomy for the 5 of us. We were supplied with towels and all paper and cleaning products. Our vacations are always focused on fishing and your cabin and lake were the perfect location. Not to say that we didn't have an afternoon enjoying swimming in the lake as well. Tim was the perfect host and made us feel very welcome. We loved all your amazing stories. Thank you so much for a great week!
My family has been vacationing to Ottertail County for 10+ years now. We have stayed on Rush Lake, Dead Lake, Glendalough, Battle Lake, and Blanche Lake at resorts, in VRBOs, and campsites. Blanche Lake has beautiful clear water and a sandy bottom. The VRBO is located in the bay of Blanche Lake. Tucked back in the bay, the lake is very peaceful. The reeds off shore do an excellent job of calming wakes. However being back in the bay means less current, so there is a slight layer of silt deposited on the sugar sand making it less hard-packed sand than, say, at the public access area. The VRBO is more of a mother-in-law suite than a true stand-alone vacation rental. The VRBO is attached to the main house by way of double locked, sound-proof doors. Also of note, the owners live and work here year round. When checking in, you will be given a detailed tour of the property. The finishes are beautiful—vaulted ceilings, ceiling fans in every room, beautiful cabinets, backsplash, tiling, and flooring. The larger bedroom has a window unit AC and there are 2 box fans in the cabin. There is no access to the thermostat (that I could find) for the rest of the cabin. Dishes, bath towels, pots/pans, and coffee filters are provided, as well as some toilet paper, paper towels, ziplocs/plastic wrap and trash/grocery bags; salt and pepper are provided. Plan to bring your own beach towels. We stayed 9 nights in late July/early August and had a wonderful time. Would recommend for a smaller family retreat.
Some things to note:
-at any given point, only 6 adults are allowed at the VRBO, meaning this is not an idea locale for large family dinners, family reunions, etc…
-there is no clothesline or washer/dryer on site
-the owners keep two large labs (very sweet and well behaved) that frequently wander the property—just something to note if you are afraid of large dogs or very allergic. The dogs are not allowed in the cabin, but one lives outside and roams the property unleashed.
Some suggestions for improvement:
-propane tank was empty on second night of stay, and needed to be changed again on day 4. Perhaps offering a standard charcoal grill would be a better option?
-with the wildlife here, trash is an issue, perhaps your garbage servicer could issue you another can?
-there were no matches/lighters in the house for fires
Note that the owners do live here year round--Saturday morning they mowed the lawn/blew leaves, so plan for the owners to be around.
