What makes this House unique
Our insanely gorgeous cove is protected by a reef across the opening with a rocky outcropping on one side and Wilk Cay on the other. It's like a 3 acre private ocean swimming pool with the clear tourquoise water of the Bahamas. The sandy beach has a gradual dropoff with no current and small waves (good for kids) that goes to 12 feet at the reef.

A beautiful place - but too hot in the summer.
Our extended family spend a week at this property in August. First let's start with the positives. The owner was very receptive to our needs and was very upfront and honest about everything. She extended herself as much as possible. The caretaker is also a wonderful person and was responsive to all our needs. The property was very private as there are only 5-6 homes at Wilk Cay. The view of the beach was gorgeous. The wrap around deck and lounge chairs make for great relaxing outside. You are close enough to the beach to hear the roaring ocean. There is great snorkelling about 50 feet off of the beach. The beach was very sandy and the entrance had very few rocks. We were the only people on the beach the entire week. Wilk Cay is positioned well in Long Island, and you can drive to all parts of the island from there. The stores in nearby Salt Pond are well stocked. On the other hand, even though the caretaker did rake the beach from seaweed before we came, it returns quickly, and after a few days, you have to contend with it. Even though there is quite a bit of protective reef at the perimeter of the cay as it meets the Atlantic, the water was quite choppy, which made snorkelling difficult. The real issue for August visits is the heat, as the home has no A/C, and the owner did not conceal those facts. The owner said that the house had ceiling fans and we were at a windy side of the island. All true, and if you keep the doors and windows open, the kitchen and living room are livable. However, even with the windows open, the bedrooms were very hot. We had a portable fan in one bedroom, which made it livable - but the other bedrooms were just too hot. We also had to contend with trying to catch mice that had entered the home on the first night. We also had to deal with an attack of flies (not no see ums) on one of the nights, which required us to shut the windows, which only made it hotter. I found the layout of the home to be too small, with very narrow stairwells and hallways from room to room. But if you are looking for a home with A/C and larger rooms, you will have to pay twice as much. So I guess we got what we paid for.
Very sorry our house didn't work out better for you. Like I said we have never been there in summer. I think we will not rent for August again.
Sea weed has been an extra big problem thoughout the Caribbean this year I have read, supposedly due to a big bloom off the coast of Brasil.
The mice are a new problem that we will deal with and get rid of. Obviously the house was too small for your party of 10. Our ad says 6-8 not 10 and we will never rent to such a big party again.
as a note to other hosts;
we warned this guest, before he reserved the house, that there was no air conditioning and told him that if that was important to him he should probably rent a different house. we've rented to others in the summer and there hasn't been a problem before. we normally have trade winds in the summer, but i guess they failed while he was there. he had a large party and we let him have an extra bedroom, that we normally don't make available, at no additional cost. after his review we tried to make it right, but he wasn't interested and gave us a bad review.
Beautiful one of a kind house
The house was truly a work of art. Very beautifully decorated. The woodwork was just outstanding and truly a one of a kind creation. Lots of outlets, looked like an engineer wired the house. The road is very long, about 2 miles, and you need a car with slightly more than normal ground clearance, but certainly no problem. Bottled water cooler was a nice touch. Had a few problems with internet, but as an IT guy, we worked around them. Let the kids (3 & 10) play at the waters edge without worry. Water was very calm. The four of us didn't even use the downstairs bedroom, better to be upstairs. The house could use a kid type room with bunk beds or something, but our two slept in the same room. Not sure that works one they get a bit older. We had excellent breezes this time of year, but we probably would want a house with AC in November or past March when it can get stuffy at night, at least in parent room.
The TV didn't work at all during our stay, until the last night, when I figured out the USB hard drive cable was bad.
We loved the house, and the location. We didn't come to watch TV so that part didn't matter. We would definitely rent again during the cooler months. Nothing is a pretty as this house, and shows that the owners really worked to make it something special.
Can't beat Welk Cay on Long Island, Bahamas and this property was perfect for our stay. Six of us settled in for a week of sun, surf, great food, and unforgettable family island time. Every window had a view, the breeze kept the little biting bugs away and the sound of the waves lulled. The kitchen was well equipped for cooking our fresh catch each morning, as well as Christmas cookies, pizza, and anything else we felt like creating. Coffee pot died on the second day but backup smaller pot was found. Beds were comfortable, showers inside and out were perfect. The house really was perfect! Two mile driveway could be tricky with oneway traffic (honk around corners), but so worth it if you are looking for privacy and deserted beaches. Caretaker David Harding is one of the nicest people around and is always available if you need anything. Long Island is a must for people wanting a vacation off the beaten track. Flights from Nassau are about 50 minutes, though don't expect them to strictly adhere to a departure time. Bring supplies you can't live without but expect to find a good assortment of food at most of the local stores. Hit the farmers market in Salt Pond on Saturday morning (get there right at 8am) for fresh local grown fruit and vegetables, fresh baked bread and sweets and beautiful island made ware. Max's Conch Bar for the best Conch Salad in the Bahamas and mingle with ex-pats and locals for insider view on where and what to do while visiting! Catch Dean's Blue Hole, sunset drink at Cape Santa Maria waiting for the green flash, Pina Colada at the grill overlooking the Stella Maris Resort Beach, Clarence Town for unforgettable lobster tacos at Lighthouse Point, and the most beautiful white powder sugar beach at Gordon's!!
Beautiful, comfortable, unique
Artful spacious house with lots of porches right on an ocean cove protected by reef. Because it's situated on a small bluff on the east side of the island, lively winds keep it cool and bug free. The helpful owners have thought of everything! Our vacation group included 3 generations...We were all comfortable and there was something for everyone to enjoy. I love the friendly people of Long Island! And the coconut shrimp at Max's is the best ever!
Our family of seven was fortunate to have spent eight nights at this secluded bit of paradise on Long Island. We rented all three comfortable bedrooms with the seventh person on the futon in the living room. This whimsical cottage was lovingly constructed by a true craftsman with many artistic touches. The colorful tile work and woodwork are noteworthy. The kitchen is more than adequate, and we were amazed at how well equipped it was. Th porch area is extra generous complete with porch swing and hammocks to laze away the time whenever the mood suits you. The panoramic view from the porch and bedrooms is simply stellar. There are only a handful of homes on this secluded cove with a perfect semicircular beach. Only a couple of the homes were occupied while we were there,so we pretty much had the beach to ourselves...such pristine privacy is truly a luxury. The protected cove is perfect for swimming and snorkeling. The surrounding rock formations add a touch of surreal beauty. The beach is accessed by a short walk through the sea grape vegetation. We had a dinner party one night for thirteen people and there was ample room for all. David, the amiable caretaker, was more than helpful. Access to this oasis of tranquility is a good ten minute drive from Salt Pond via a narrow road through the tropical brush. It is a remote location, yet near enough to grocery and dining in Salt Pond. Long Island has become one of our family's favorite island destinations and this rental has all the trappings for a perfect vacation getaway.
Couldn't Have Asked for More!
Where do I start!?
The Cottage: The cottage is located smack in the middle of Salt Pond. The view is incredible and the constant breeze on the wrap around porch and through the house was amazing. I am from The Bahamas and do not enjoy the heat as much as our foreign friends but we literally slept under blankets each night thanks to the constant sweet cool breeze flowin’ through each room during mid-June. It is about a 10 min drive through the bush from the main road to the house, this was also a highlight of ours and was much like a roller coaster ride in the jeep we brought over from Nassau. There were thousands of little butterflies during this time of the year and the bush trek to the cottage was a sightseeing attraction in of itself. The beds are very cozy and the cottage is wonderfully designed; it’s not a rental it’s a home. Wireless is spotty but didn't really present a problem we need exactly where in the cottage to stand to get a good signal. There is no television (which I only noticed our last day there) which none of us obviously cared about; we were not there to watch tv. 5 stars here.
The Beach and Cove: Beautiful beach a 2 min. stroll from the porch. I had no idea the beach had pink sand (been to Harbour Island before so I mean PINK) there was a few pieces of rubbish on the beach which we picked up but I think this was probably attributed to critters getting into someone trash bin. The water is calm because of the enclosed cove and it has the most amazing mini cave with a view straight out to the open ocean, it was like a wind tunnel! We actually all sat there every morning, shared a drink and acknowledged what a beautiful thing life is.
The Hosts: The owners the Hoots are top notch. Geoff and I had a great time chatting both over emails and telephone. I couldn't have felt more comfortable transacting with someone I actually haven't met before. In all honesty I felt like I was staying at a friend’s cottage and not a landlord's. David Harding the property manager is worth a return trip in itself. He was super helpful and a complete riot. The ladies on our trip loved David and his sarcastic wit, you are guaranteed to be in stiches with laughter meeting David; all around great guy.
