Overview

About the property

The cabin was completely renovated in 2011 with a strong feeling of the old west. The large stone fireplace along with propane heat keep the cabin warm and cozy. The spacious upstairs loft features queen size and full size beds. There is one single rollaway available for extra sleeping downstairs. Kids love the separate bunk house out back. Kitchen has all the features of a modern home with a dinning table and bar. Bathroom has a shower/vintage claw foot tub combo along with a washer and dryer. All towels, linens and paper products are provided. There is a covered wrap around porch that features views of Myrtle Point, gorgeous pine, juniper and oak trees. Renters can relax around the table on the porch which has plenty of room to enjoy an outside meal. A year round spring attracts wildlife with frequent viewings of elk and turkey. We encourage you to bring your horses -- the riding is fantastic in the Tonto National Forest, which is right through the back gate. There are two 12x12 clean horse pens. Water provided. Renters are responsible for their horses feed and vet supplies.

We do not allow ATVs on the property except during hunting seasons. There is a 4 adult limit.

About Gino Ater

I live next to the cabin in a log home I built in 1986. I also own the old log ranch house on the property that dates back to 1898, which I am renovating.

Gino Ater purchased this cabin in 2003

Why Gino Ater chose Payson

I bought my land in 1984 with the intent of building a vacation home. Having grown up in Tempe, my family would often come up to the Rim area for fun. After completion of my home I seemed to spend more time here and less in Tempe. In 1993 I moved here full time.

What makes this cabin unique

Privacy. Solitude. Wildlife. Excellent hiking and horseback riding. The views from almost any where on the property are incredible.

Clean, serene and welcoming! Oh yea AND beautful!

  • 5 of 5

Greg and I have done a lot of camping in Payson but have never been to a cabin. Our experience was lovely. The authenticity of the old western, log cabin we stayed in was wonderful. We were overwhelmed with Gino and Jango's welcome. The view was priceless and the serenity was needed. We will be back and enjoyed every moment of our time. Thank you.

Rejuvenate your soul in this peaceful wilderness playland for humans, dogs and horses.

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I brought our 2 dogs and horses to this tranquil cabin for much needed time off the grid. The cabin is cozy and delightful providing all the essentials for comfortable vacationing. The view from the cabin is outstanding and allows for round the clock viewing of nature. Tonto National Forest is right out the back gate and our dogs thoroughly enjoyed twice a day hiking with us. We also took advantage of the miles of trails on horseback. Our horses stayed in 2 comfortable outdoor stalls located on the property.

Our hosts, Django (the Irish Wolfhound) and his human, Gino, were wonderful to work with. Gino greeted us upon our arrival and had fresh water waiting for our horses before we even unloaded them from the trailer! Gino provided excellent recommendations for trails and info on the local wildlife. We highly recommend this property for people who love to vacation with their animal family or for nature lovers in general. This was truly a magical adventure and we are already planning our trip back!

Owner's Response: Audrey and Oren I so enjoyed meeting you folks and sharing conversation about the ranch and surrounding area. The views from the cabin are truly amazing all year especially from the upstairs windows. Glad you enjoyed them!! Django and I(honestly more so I), are so happy that you were able to advise a treatment for his tummy issues. He hopes the horses come back to play with him soon . I hope to see you all here again to enjoy all the cabin has to offer.

Rustic, warm and welcoming getaway

  • 5 of 5

Unique rustic cabin with a lot of character and charm. Mullet type adventure. Front door- neighborly, back door- all nature. School break adventure with granddaughter met so many goals. Listened to bull elks bugle and cow elks talk all night. Direct gate out back door to national forest for hiking/adventures. Our host Gino and his pal Jango were so interesting and helpful. Thank you Gino for granddaughter's elk teeth "find" and arranging her visit with your neighbors horses. Also for helping with our s'mores by the fire overlooking the gulley. Your Jango will not be forgotten and the pictures have been enjoyed by many. Cabin was clean and ready, just wish could have stayed longer. Thank you Gino for sharing so much with us. Your place is amazing.

Owner's Response: You picked perfect time to visit Dead Mule Ranch with the elk rut in full swing. The bulls are always vocal in mid September and i am glad you were able to hear them. I had such a great time conversing with you folks and sharing a home cooked meal at the cabin. Thank you so much for the tacos!! Django always enjoys welcoming guests, both human and canine, to the cabin and spending time getting a few ear scratches. Please come back for another visit sometime this winter so you grand daughter can play in the snow and create some more fond memories..

Great weekend getaway spot

  • 5 of 5

My girlfriend, our dog, and myself had an amazing time on our stay here. The cabin was a perfect size for us and had all that we really could have wanted (except for internet service, but I suppose that's the point of coming somewhere like this...to get away from technology and regular life). Gino was very friendly before the trip and helped make sure that we found the place, and took the time to swing by and introduce himself while we were there. We were upset with ourselves that we didn't bring any movies or games to watch, but discovered a closet full of DVDs and games, so crisis averted! We'd recommend this to anyone looking for a nice place to unwind for a weekend.

Loved the remote location and access to Tonto National Forest!

  • 5 of 5

We really loved our stay. The beds were comfortable and we had plenty of sleeping room. With my husbands limitations we loved sleeping in the bunk house and the upstairs was perfect for our daughter's family/dog. We so enjoyed being able to walk out the back gate and go hiking. We also enjoyed walking around the main roads and seeing all the animals both wild and domestic. Just an awesome trip for us who were missing the mountains, nature, and peace & quiet. The only issues were lack of pot holders, kitchen towels, and keeping our daughters large, older dog separated from Django while they were enjoying the awesome horseback ride you recommended. Your dog is so sweet, we did enjoy his visits. Our final night, Royce and I sat out by fire area and thouroughly enjoyed the brilliant star gazing. I am sure Royce and I will be back to stay again. We are also looking at the paperwork you gave us and will be in touch about that. Thank you so much again. It was great to meet and visit with you during our stay. You were a wonderful fountain of knowledge of the area!

Owner's Response: Sara and Royce I'm so glad you folks enjoyed your stay here. My apologies for not having pot holders and dish towels at the cabin . I had washed/dried them at my cabin and forgot to bring them over. Next time you visit just let me know and I will take care of any of your needs that I can. I hope to see you back at Dead Mule Ranch soon for another stay. Thanks so much for the kind words Gino
