About Gino Ater

I live next to the cabin in a log home I built in 1986. I also own the old log ranch house on the property that dates back to 1898, which I am renovating.

Gino Ater purchased this cabin in 2003

Why Gino Ater chose Payson

I bought my land in 1984 with the intent of building a vacation home. Having grown up in Tempe, my family would often come up to the Rim area for fun. After completion of my home I seemed to spend more time here and less in Tempe. In 1993 I moved here full time.

What makes this cabin unique

Privacy. Solitude. Wildlife. Excellent hiking and horseback riding. The views from almost any where on the property are incredible.

Our expectations were far exceeded!

  • 5 of 5

There was old school charm, warmth, and comfort during our two night stay. The cabin had all the accommodations needed for a small family and the owner’s hospitality and friendly demeanor was an added bonus. Upon arrival we were greeted by Django (owner’s unique dog) who was a sight to behold! Friendly and curious....Django was a hit with the kids! The memories will last and we hope to return sooner than later. Thank you again Gino for what you have built on this amazing property. We love Dead Mule Ranch!!

Amazon cabin and superb hospitality.

Gino is incredibly hospitable and the cabin is beautiful. Also great remote location. We especially loved being greeted by a polar bear at our door. We will be back!

Excellent place to relax!

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I had a great time during our break at the cabin. A perfect place for anyone to come and get away from the city in order to unwind. All the amenities you could ask for and Gino is an excellent host with the most hospitable demeanor. We look forward to our next trip back!

Owner's Response: Michael Thank you so much for the kind words regarding your stay here. I really enjoyed our lengthly conversation and hope to have the opportunity to continue where we left off during your next visit here. I will be happy to show you a few places close by that are safe for shooting either small caliber or long range. Be sure to tell your fellow Veterans about DEAD MULE RANCH as I would love to host them here and advise them as to the hunting opportunities in the area. Best to you Gino

Wonderful Getaway!!!

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I, along with our dog just spent a long weekend at Gino's lovely cabin in the pines. I don't know who enjoyed it more, us or our dog. She adored playing with Gino's loveable dog, Django.

Both Gino and Django were excellent hosts. They made sure we had everything we needed and that the cabin wasn't lacking for anything. Gino is a great guy and really looks after you during your visit. Django does the same with any of the canine guests as well!

Our romantic getaway to the mountains was everything we hoped for.

We will most certainly be back to enjoy Gino's great little cabin!

Owner's Response: I'm so glad you folks has a great stay here at the DMR cabin. Really enjoyed meeting you and talking about the ranch and Arizona history. Django misses his girl friend Sammy and hopes she will come back for some romping around in the meadow. Hope to see you all for a return stay very soon.

Clean, serene and welcoming! Oh yea AND beautful!

  • 5 of 5

Greg and I have done a lot of camping in Payson but have never been to a cabin. Our experience was lovely. The authenticity of the old western, log cabin we stayed in was wonderful. We were overwhelmed with Gino and Jango's welcome. The view was priceless and the serenity was needed. We will be back and enjoyed every moment of our time. Thank you.

Rejuvenate your soul in this peaceful wilderness playland for humans, dogs and horses.

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I brought our 2 dogs and horses to this tranquil cabin for much needed time off the grid. The cabin is cozy and delightful providing all the essentials for comfortable vacationing. The view from the cabin is outstanding and allows for round the clock viewing of nature. Tonto National Forest is right out the back gate and our dogs thoroughly enjoyed twice a day hiking with us. We also took advantage of the miles of trails on horseback. Our horses stayed in 2 comfortable outdoor stalls located on the property.

Our hosts, Django (the Irish Wolfhound) and his human, Gino, were wonderful to work with. Gino greeted us upon our arrival and had fresh water waiting for our horses before we even unloaded them from the trailer! Gino provided excellent recommendations for trails and info on the local wildlife. We highly recommend this property for people who love to vacation with their animal family or for nature lovers in general. This was truly a magical adventure and we are already planning our trip back!

Owner's Response: Audrey and Oren I so enjoyed meeting you folks and sharing conversation about the ranch and surrounding area. The views from the cabin are truly amazing all year especially from the upstairs windows. Glad you enjoyed them!! Django and I(honestly more so I), are so happy that you were able to advise a treatment for his tummy issues. He hopes the horses come back to play with him soon . I hope to see you all here again to enjoy all the cabin has to offer.
