Overview

About the property

Modern, 6 Bedroom, 4 bathroom resort with pool/spa in secluded woods

Just 90 miles north of New York City, the Shaker House was hand-built over 20 years by architect Fritz Sulzer from IM Pei's Manhattan offices as his personal retirement home, and has a massive two-story pool and a large modern spa.

Blasted from the granite clefts overlooking the main house, the pool area consists of two heated pools, two waterfalls, multiple patios (including one in the water), custom lighting, and a thunderous sound-system that can stream music from any Apple device. It's like a private, 5-star resort was airlifted into the middle of a forest. As one guest commented, 'This isn't a house with a pool. It's a pool with a house!'.

There are 5 bedrooms and 4 bathrooms in the main house and 1 bed and bathroom in a separate guest house, called the Smoke Shack. Each bedroom is entirely unique:

The Quarry Suite is built into the exposed rock and has a massive attached bathroom, which with an open shower, hand-laid emerald mirrored tile, and waterfall flowing from the exposed rocks is like a mini-spa in and of itself.

The Aviary is a window-lined bedroom on the top floor with a bed that sits on a lofted floor under a skylight and a sleeper sofa and large walk-in closet.

The Nursery is a large, light-filled bedroom with an attached, fully equiped crib room, so new parents can be close to their baby without having to fear going into their bedroom.

The Master Suite has modern, clean lines and a king-size thermarest bed. It's attached to a private, slate bathroom with a large rock-lined shower and brushed nickle fixtures throughout.

Le Petit Boudoir has two custom-built adult-length twin XL beds and a large cedar-lined closet. It's right next to a beautiful french-country bathroom with a large claw-foot tub to relax in.

The Smoke Shack was the original cabin built on the property by Fritz in the 1970s. With its all birch interior, rustic furnishings, loft sleeping area, full bathroom, kitchenette, and a 56' flat screen TV with cable and Apple TV, it is a fully self-sufficent home in and of itself.

There are also multiple common spaces for people to get away:

The Great Room serves and the focal point of the Shaker House and contains four distinct social settings. The TV area has a 60' flatscreen TV with surround sound and a large sectional for seating. The fireside has a large central hearth, a bar, and seating for six. The dining area has a massive custom built cherry table that seats up to 16 people and opens into the kitchen, which is fully stocked with all the appliances, cookware, dishes, and cutlery to prepare a feast for the entire house.

Kids Only is a long playroom on the top floor with a 56' flat-screen TV, cable, Apple TV, Xbox, craft table, tumbling mats, toy-filled shelves and enough pillows and beanbags for up to 12 kids to have a sleep-over they will not soon forget.

The Sun Room, with a wet bar, beverage refrigerator, ice maker, beach towels, and pool-side dishware, serves as the perfect staging area between the house and the pool.

The Library is crafted entirely from cherry, gently lit by the large bay window, and fully wired for internet access.

Whether you're hosting a large family gathering, wedding, or corporate outing, your guests will be delighted by the light-filled modern spaces set against the rustic charm of 25 acres of secluded forest filled with family friendly amenities.

About Jessica and Ryan

Ryan and Jessica bought and renovated the Shaker House as a modern and comfortable private retreat from the city. They love to entertain family and friends and understand how difficult it is to find a quality getaway that houses large gatherings. They live and work NYC with their two children.

Jessica and Ryan purchased this house in 2012

Why Jessica and Ryan chose Hudson Valley

We looked all over the Hudson Valley for a home we could enjoy with friends and family on weekends and holidays. We live in NYC and were seeking a place within 2 hours of the city. We looked on both sides of the Hudson River where there are many charming towns and properties, but there was no place we liked more than Red Hook. While other towns feel a bit crowded on the weekends, Red Hook feels undiscovered and quaint. There is one of everything you need -- an ice cream, shop, movie theater, grocery and local bar. But you won't find yourself calling ahead for brunch reservations or spending hours window shopping here. For that, you can simply drive to the next town over. Rhinebeck, with a slightly more populated main street is only 5 miles to the south of Red Hook. Best of both worlds.

What makes this house unique

This home was built as a personal project of a retired architect for his family to enjoy, and it shows. The design of the house is unique and beautiful, paying homage to the rock it was built upon -- slate. Many materials for the home were taken from the surrounding land. The house is built into the rock which you can see protruding into a beautiful bathroom on the main floor. Although the main house sleep 12 people (and 2 more in the guest house), it does not feel too large -- just the opposite. The Shaker house is built with a symmetry and efficiency of space that makes it feel cozy and deserving of a large family gathering. In 2012, we renovated parts of the house and added a pool and spa to the property to make this house truly a destination for relaxation and recreation. We also added an indoor play room for the kids, called 'Kids Only'. This room extends the full length of the house and provides toys, games, TV and sleeping room for kids young and old. When searching for our perfect country home, we looked for a house with character as well as a beautiful design. This house delivers on both fronts. However, the detail that took my breath away was the great room. It is expansive enough to hold a holiday gathering, yet organized into 3 distinct areas, inviting you to relax in 3 different ways (dining, socializing, and media/tv entertainment).

The Shaker House is located between three of the Hudson Valley's most beautiful and charming villages, Rhinebeck, Red Hook, and Hudson. Each of them has wonderful restaurants, antiquing, and charming walkable town centers with events throughout the spring, summer and fall. Among other recreational pursuits, there is skiing and golf available as well as winery tours and culinary finds. The property sits right between the Catskills and the Berkshires and within driving distance of 8 ski resorts. Windham, Hunter, Plattekill, Belleayre, and Sawkill are to the west and Bousquet, Jiminy, and Catamount are to the east. There are two great golf courses near the house. Red Hook Country club is just 10 miles from the house and has 18 beautifully manacured acres. Copake Country Club, with 18 holes set in the Berkshire foothills and overlooking Copake Lake is just 30 miles to the north. The Shaker House sits right on the Dutchess Wine Trail, south of the Hudson-Berkshire Trail, and North of the Shawangunk Wine Trail for all your tippling needs. If you prefer to enjoy nature, the Shaker House is set on 25 acres of pristine oak and pine forest. Located in the foot-hills of the Taconic Mountains, the property consists of countless granite cliffs that rise to over 800 ft above sea- level at their highest point. Whether exploring the multiple springs and streams in the spring, the dense folliage of the summer, the colors of the fall, or donning snow-shoes or cross-country skis in the winter, hiking is the perfect way to connect with the surrounding natural wonder.

The house is under 2 hours from NYC, and is within 3 miles of the Taconic Parkway.

Stunner!

  • 5 of 5

Nicer than the pictures! Look no further; this is the one. We have a group (typically 8-12 of us) that has been renting houses in the Hudson area for the last few years. This is hands down the best place we've been. We have grown accustomed to small idiosyncrasies and issues with the houses we rent, but this one is flawless.

Some highlights:

-We easily fit 9 of us in the hot tub, and probably could have put another one or two people in without feeling crowded.

-The "quarry suite" needs to be seen to be understood. It is incredible. Showering without a waterfall flowing down a rock outcropping will never be the same.

-The great room allows for large groups to be together, but not on top of one another, and there is ample seating between a sectional, a sofa, armchairs, etc). Additionally, the large dining table allows for everyone to have meals together.

-The fireplace works well and made the evenings nicer (in fact, it works so well we had to turn down the thermostats).

-The massive island in the kitchen is perfect for large meal prep or for laying out a variety of snacks, there's plenty of room to use the kitchen as a hangout space (food never fails to attract, it seems), and the kitchen is fully stocked with ample cookware, utensils, glassware, etc. We even made use of the double ovens, and it has a dishwasher (always necessary for large groups).

-There is an ice maker in the sunroom/downstairs bar area. This is a big deal for large groups, especially when the nearest place to pick up ice requires driving.

-Every bedroom is nice. Many houses have bedrooms and "bedrooms," where small beds are thrown two to four in a room to increase the number of people the house "sleeps." This is not one of those houses. The "smoke shack" is a bit of a misnomer; it's significantly nicer than the name lets on and is more of a lofted bedroom over a livingroom and kitchen. We were worried about who would be relegated to the smoke shack until we saw it. We had volunteers who wanted to spend the night there.

-There is an elevator, a nursery, and a playroom in the house (though we needed none of those), to accommodate any traveler.

-We were here during cold weather, but the pool looks amazing.

I could keep on going. We're already planning out next trip to the Shaker House. Simply incredible!

More Than Amazing!

  • 5 of 5

When I close my eyes I still see the beautiful green tree line which surrounds the morning view from the Master bedroom. We had 7 kids, 6 adults and a very well behaved dog on our stay-journey at the Shaker House. Plenty of room for all and the pool area was perfect for small kids and grown ups too! We had so much fun, laughs and wonderful family reunion memories. I rent a lot from VRBO-- homeaway and this was one of the best. I highly recommend.

Great Big House with lots of room and fabulous pools

  • 5 of 5

My family had a wonderful time at the Shaker House the end of June. We all had plenty of room from the big kitchen, dining room, great room and all the bedrooms. The ages ranged from 7 to 77 and we spent most of our day up by the beautiful pool. So much fun planning our meals and cooking together. The Shack proved to be perfect for the two twenty year old folks and it gave them privacy. I can't think of a better place to have a family vacation or family reunion. Thanks Ryan for opening up your house for us and being so easy to work with.

A lovely place

  • 5 of 5

We picked this spot because the reviews were great and the presentation was inspiring. I loved the shaker-style neutrality of the place, and the way that every bathroom and shower was it's own kind of luxury, even in the Smoke Shack! We were there on a rainy weekend, and found it to be comfortable and a great place to prepare meals and spend time together - me, my partner and 12 close friends. The landscape is rolling hills and mossy rock outcroppings, and the window views even on a rainy day brought nature close.

The house was unique and impressive but needed minor repairs and better cleaning throughout.

  • 3 of 5

Overall, our group of 8 was comfortable and enjoyed our stay especially the spacious living room and eating area which were quite conducive to lounging and visiting. The weather was cold and rainy so we were happy to remain inside. Unfortunately, due to weather we were unable to fully enjoy the pool and hot tub neither of which were properly prepared for our visit anyway. It is early May but weather permitting that would have been more of a concern.

Owner's Response: Well, after 5 years, it was inevitable we'd get less than a stellar review! After I saw this I wrote John to see what had happened. He was disappointed that the pool wasn't open (even though it was in the 50s while he was staying). I explained that he had rented during a period when the pool is listed as closed and wasn't paying for it. Once he realized this, he attempted to retract this review, but unfortunately VRBO doesn't allow that anymore. Either way, we made sure to take care of John, and all is good!

Outstanding house for a large group

  • 5 of 5

The Shaker House is superb and is located in a 500 acre wood with plenty to explore. The photos don't really do it justice. Having a waterfall in your bathroom is something special! We were a group of 9 adults and 2 children after a wedding in Brooklyn and were looking to relax and wind down. It is very well equipped and the top floor is a kids delight and is fantastic in terms of layout and equipment for the kids to enjoy. Excellent bedrooms and bathrooms and the large living space with a 16 seat dining table next to the kitchen is great for a large group. The kitchen is very well equipped (compared to some!) with masses of glassware and plates etc. which made preparation very easy.

Outside the hot tub is a delight and we only wish we could have been there when the split-level swimming pool was functioning.

The separate love shack house is some way from the house, neat and well equipped but ideal for a honeymoon couple! (But you need to be agile to reach the upper level bed).

All in all it was a real find. Any issues were promptly and professionally handled by Ryan, which was great to see. As overseas visitors not knowing upstate NY, Ryan was also helpful in answering queries before the visit. We would definitely return to this house.

NB: If you are light sensitive don't forget to bring a sleeping mask as there are no curtains in the bedrooms.
