|Minimum Stay||7 nights|
Located on the shores of historic St. George Island (est.1638) in southern Maryland (no Chesapeake Bay Bridge to cross!), this 6,500 sq. ft. custom-built home is situated on 6+ wooded acres with expansive views of the Potomac River – the perfect retreat for multi-family reunions/vacations, and business conferences.
While enjoying your morning coffee, watch the watermen in their Chesapeake Bay wooden work-boats as they haul in their catch of Maryland blue crabs or oysters, just off shore. Have the desire to also be on the water? Bring your boat! Boat lift at the end of your pier is set for approximately 21 ft boat, weighing less than 7,000 lbs.
Stroll up and down your own private sandy beach (almost 2 football fields long) - ideal for collecting lots of sea glass, sun-bathing, swimming, tubing (1 provided), floating (many floats provided), kayaking (2 provided), picnicking (picnic table for 8 on your private pier), and long romantic walks.
Later, walk onto your private pier for some fishing and crabbing (rods & traps provided). Later in the day, you may want to feast on your catch of crabs (crab steamer provided), perch, spot, and/or flounder on the waterfront porch that seats 20. This is when you’ll see many of the birds that inhabit St. George Island: Bald Eagles, Great Blue Herons, Brown Pelicans, Swans, Ospreys (a pair are nesting right off shore), Hummingbirds, Bluebirds, Great Egrets, Barn Owls, Mallards, and Loons. Almost 6 acres of the estate is wooded and home to fox, deer, chipmunks, rabbits, and turtles.
To work off some of your scrumptious meal, there are tons of outdoor games (cornhole, bocce, badminton, volleyball, basketball, etc.) to play (all provided). Jump on your bike (2 provided) if you care to explore the rest of St. George Island.
Want to get off the island for a while? Jump in your car and visit historic St. Mary's City St. (the original capital of Maryland and host of the River Concert Series), Sotterley Plantation, Calvert Marine Museum, five (5) lighthouses, historic barns, Amish communities, Maryland International Raceway, cruise to historic Smith Island, golf courses, deep sea fishing tours, as well as other historical sites, museums, movies, restaurants, shopping, etc. that southern Maryland has to offer. Want to go a bit further? Washington DC, Annapolis, and Baltimore are all about 2 hours away. You’ll find a brochure display in the laundry room, with over 40 destinations for you to pick from.
Once you’re back on the island, you’ll be there just in time to enjoy the most spectacular sunset you can imagine. After dark, light a fire in the fire pit (wood provided), located on the upper beach (yes, you have 2 beaches!) and roast marshmallows (skewers provided) or, make them into smores. When it’s completely dark you’ll see an astonishing number of stars. Spend hours star gazing with the naked eye or binoculars (3 provided). Before putting your head on your pillow, open the window and fall asleep to the sound of the waves gently breaking on the sandy beach. If you should wake up, chances are you’ll see the moon and its light reflecting off the river.
After you read the reviews other vacationers have posted on this site regarding their stay on St. George Island, we hope you'll come visit with us. Once you've slept on an island you’ll never quite be the same!
I'm surrounded by my 5 amazing grandchildren - the joy of my life. All children are special to me and for that reason, I've written a series of children's illustrated books titled Hang On to Jesus! Adventures. It is my hope that these books will provide children and their parents with a Christian foundation.
The house is absolutely stellar. Everything was beyond expectations -- the house itself, the waterfront property and outdoor lounge area, the dock, swimming, the whole experience. Rick is fantastic -- super communicative, helpful, and resourceful.
We housed 14 adults for three nights and couldn't have been happier with the experience. We would definitely love to come back sometime! Thanks for everything, Rick!
We just held our annual retreat at Rick's house. What an amazing place! The facilities are excellent, plenty of space for group discussion plus break out space. The porch has seating space for over 16 (I believe) so group meetings are easy. There are also large kitchen, dinning and lounge areas many it possible to have break-out sessions. We made full use of the unbelievably well-equipped kitchen, pier, swimming opportunities and fire pit for group and individual activities. Rick was a great host, very communicative and everything was taken of.
In summary, this was a great place to host our first retreat and we look forward to a return visit next year.
Everything about our stay this August ’16 on St. George’s Island felt like a dream made reality - to start, Rick is the most hospitable and available host possible. We have rented a number of vacation rentals and this has been truly one of the best. Any question we had from the day we booked through the very last day of our trip was answered kindly and quickly! We are a pretty large family of 20 and span in ages from 7 – 75 and we couldn’t have been more comfortable. We spent the week catching crabs with the crab cages/ample nets, lying in the sun both on the water in the MANY floats provided in the shed as well as on the many beach chairs adorning the spacious, private beach. We set up the volleyball net to play badminton, had corn hole tournaments and enjoyed many nights around the fire pit making s’mores! There’s nothing better than sitting out on the dock at night where the warm breeze keeps away any bugs. A few of the little guys spent the entire time playing basketball on the driveway while others enjoyed the spots of shade on the lawn perfect for a great Summer read. The kitchen had everything we could possibly need and more and we loved the popcorn maker!
Could not have asked for a better vacation and would recommend this house ten-fold!
We stayed at Rick's gorgeous house in late July 2016. We're a three-generation family of fourteen and we've been doing the vacation rental thing for several years. I can say without hesitation Rick's house was the nicest we've ever stayed at. Everything was very clean and tidy and the house had more amenities than we could use. He has an entire closet full of kids' things: bed rails, high chairs, even a pack 'n play. The kitchen is well supplied. There's a shed packed with outdoor activities, life jackets, fishing rods, crab pots (don't forget the freezer full of perfectly sized bait) and water toys. The yard is huge and great for kids to play on. The beaches are awesome. The sunsets are incredible. The rooms are all beautifully appointed and the house is as comfortable as you could want.
And then there's Rick! As if the house wasn't lovely enough, he is the most engaged owner we've ever encountered. He was available at a moment's notice and came by the house twice to check on things during our stay. He even showed us how to catch and cook fresh crabs. Just a super, super nice guy.
We did have two minor complaints: First the bedroom with the full-size bed doesn't have any windows. This wasn't a big deal for us. The other thing was that there was an unusually number of jellyfish in the water, which prevented us from swimming.
Obviously jellyfish are a fact of life (especially in the Potomac) but Rick explained they're usually very rare at the surface like that. During our stay the temperatures got up to the mid 90s or higher every day. Rick explained that the hot weather draws them up to the surface. A few of the braver adults ventured into the water and some got stung. It was enough that we didn't let our kids swim at all. Instead we blew up kiddie pools in the yard. (Rick had one in the shed, of course!)
Obviously we don't blame Rick for the jellyfish, but their presence meant we couldn't take advantage of the water as we had hoped. Rick explained that this really was a freak occurrence, an act of God, and that he never gets complaints about jellyfish. As you can see from all the five star reviews, no one else has complained about them! The only reason we mention it is because it's information we would have liked to have had before we rented, though it probably wouldn't have changed our decision given how rarely the issue seems to occur. Aside from the jellyfish we had the perfect vacation!
Our family vacation at Rick’s estate on St George’s island was a very wonderful experience which created joyful memories that will last a lifetime. Rick has to be in the top ten list of World Class accommodating hosts. Rick’s attention to detail ensures every moment spent at his place will be relaxing and enjoyable. The house is beautiful and packed with so many amenities that we did not get to use all of them. As I write this review I miss the morning cup of coffee on the deck while watching the river flow below soaring ospreys and an eagle or two. Joyful relaxation is a keyword while staying at Rick’s estate. Our group consisted of 9 adults and 3 toddlers and there were rooms in Rick’s house that we did not use. Rick’s place is a wonderful private retreat where you get to watch the sunset over the water every day and the toughest decision you have to make is do you watch the sunset from a tube floating on the river or while sitting on the fishing pier or while lounging on one of the many chairs provided. Multi-generation family vacations are always awesome no matter where they take place but if you would like one that will be fondly talked about forever take it at Rick’s place.
The Kilfeather's 2016
Every other summer, as a group of 6-7 families who happen to be more like family, travels to a home to spend time together and enjoy new memories. This year we chose St. George Island and this amazing home. The lawn was tickled with dragonflies, the sunsets dazzled every evening, the beach was filled with beautiful shells and sea glass, off the dock we saw fish, birds, sting rays, and more. The shed has every amenity you could possibly desire. The kitchen is stocked with every tool and pan you would ever need. This vacation was thus far our absolute favorite. We cannot wait to return!
