Charming. Romantic. Classic. This Chesapeake Bay Beach Cottage is perfect for a couple or a single. A great get away.
Culag - Scottish Gaelic for 'wee one back behind,' is a classic Chespeake Bay cottage but there is nothing 'wee' about its beautiful views or setting. This cottage is fully renovated with one bedroom, one bath, full kitchen and gorgeous Bay views at a price you can afford. Perfect for a single, a couple or a small family, Culag offers private beach access and beach activities, like swimming, kayaking or lounging - all within a few hundred feet from the front door.
This beautifully decorated one bedroom, one bath whispers 'relax, kick your shoes off, put your feet up and unwind.' Culag also provides a Florida room plus washer and dryer, giving you everything you need to make your visit perfect.
Enjoy coffee on your private deck surrounded with Bay views, then wander down to the beach. Kayak the Bay or the many secluded creeks filled with wildlife and solitude. Or, bike down to Pt. Lookout Park, only a few miles away. 2 Kayaks and 2 bicycles are provided for your exclusive use. Or, take the kids crabbing in nearby Hollis Lake behind the beach (more like a pond) or fishing at Pt. Lookout State Park.
Look in one direction and enjoy the beauty of the Bay views, look the other direction and to find peaceful wooded forests. Enjoy them both... in one package. Herons, egrets, osprey, pelicans - and, occasionally, porpoises provide great wildlife watching.
Historic St. Mary's City, the original capital of Maryland is 10 miles away and Solomon's Island, St. George's Island and other resort communities are short drives - but who wants to leave?
Only 2 hours from Washington or Baltimore, make Culag your getaway retreat - over and over.
If Culag is booked for the dates you desire, we have another modern, nearby small Chesapeake Bay waterfront property with amazing view. Email and ask us other options for your stay.
Love urban life; also, love the isolated beach with amazing wildlife. Scotland is a welcome retreat from hectic city life.

Scotland is a rare find. Rarely do you find an area that begins with beautiful forests and opens up onto fabulous beaches. Little traffic but only 2 hours from Washington or Baltimore. I discovered a jewel.
Sunrise over the Bay with morning coffee is heavenly. Walks on the beach. Take a 30 minute kayak ride or a 5 hours one - very convenient out the front door. Enjoy a tasting of good quality local wines at beautiful Woodlawn plantation just 10 miles away.
Our stay at the Culag was relaxing, despite mother nature providing much rain during our 3 night visit. There was just enough space for my husband, dog and I. I enjoyed sipping my morning coffee and reading in the sunroom. Between rain storms, I made every effort to spend time on the private beach just a short walk down the lane. FYI Some of the neighbors allow their dogs (friendly) to roam free, so be aware if you're walking a dog who isn't too social, skittish or is protective of you.
The Culag was nicely stocked with toiletries (shampoo, mouthwash, soap, & body wash) and cleaning supplies. The linens and towels were clean. It was furnished with quality appliances and comfortable furniture. The cottage is in a rustic/wooded locale; which equates to some bug nuisances within the home including gnats/small flies that were attracted to lights at night, a few spiders here and there and small ants. We did have to contact the property managers Bob and Robb upon arrival due to a ceiling leak in the bedroom; which they promptly responded and tended unto (blocked gutter).
If it were my rental, I'd make the following upkeep repairs and improvements including: repair the two cracked sunroom windows, repair the damaged bathroom doorway molding (from a prior renter's dog), repair the damaged drywall above the shower head, and possibly randomize the keyless entry code for security purposes (or add a chain lock or deadbolt inside the cottage for peach of mind). It felt somewhat damp inside the cottage (carpets and furniture); which maybe due to the bay environment, the renovated older building and/or window AC units running and may possibly benefit from a dehumidifyer. It'd be nice to store some of the outdoor items in a storage container out of the elements (both chairs have broken handles, 1/2 bike helmets were ant infested and its strap was broken and 1/2 PFDs were torn). If you plan to bike using the ones provided, make sure you pack a tire pump, and some chain lubricant due to rust.
All in all, the setting and cottage was what we fairly anticipated, easy to locate via GPS. It was a prefect blend of woods and beach for my husband and I. There are plenty of sites to visit in the area including State Parks, museums, wineries and restaurants to stay busy especially during rainy weather. The Point Lookout region has a lot to offer for outdoor enthusiasts, the young, old and young at heart!
House was beautifully decorated and well stocked with necessities. Very clean! The challenge was the outside. We rented the house with the intention of fishing and enjoying the beach. However, the biting stable flies ruined our vacation. They were swarming so badly that our white poodle appeared to be a dalmatian after 30 seconds in the yard. It was also a challenge to keep them out of the house. We purchased two fly swatters at the neighborhood Ace Hardware and spent 30 minutes every time we opened the outside door swatting flies. We realize that the home owner has no control over nature, but I wish we could have been warned, as we would not have rented from this location.
My husband, myself and our black Lab Phoenix spent a few days this past June. My first impression upon entering the cottage was that it was clean, beautifully decorated and exactly as described. Culag, was exactly what we needed, it was so relaxing that the second day we were there, we went in to take a nap and both woke up feeling that we had slept for days! The communication leading up to our stay was great, we knew exactly what to expect when we arrived. Neighbors were friendly, and even our dog Phoenix made a friend while he was there! We walked to the beach a couple times while we were there, it was peaceful, Phoenix & I just chilled and my husband tried out his new metal detector. We enjoyed seeing a variety of birds during our stay, and Phoenix was fascinated by the frogs! I enjoy writing, and was able to envision myself there with the snow falling! I am sure that the cottage is beautiful any season of the year. We just loved our stay, and are so thankful that we were given the opportunity to visit. Thank you again, our stay was wonderful. This place was more than expected. The perfect get away for two away from everyone. I would definitely come again
a neighbor with a dog recommended scotland yards rentals to us, and my husband and i took our 2 dogs for a long weekend. we had a great time- the culag is a cute, small beach cottage that was just the right size for the four of us. we enjoyed long walks, biking around, point lookout state park, solomon's island, and of course the beach! the property managers were prompt, helpful, and friendly when one of the bikes had a flat tire. the only downside to the culag is that there isn't a hose or outdoor shower, which made it difficult to rinse off our dog after the beach. we definitely plan on renting from scotland yards again, but will make sure to ask for a property with an outdoor water source.
Wonderful short get away, easy-breezy in and out, lots of fun things to do and fun doing nothing at all. We will return!
Wooded and beach together, this remote location on the Chesapeake Bay is near the city but a world away. A short bike ride from Pt. Lookout State Park but still its own private beach community. A great escape to relax, enjoy the beauty of the Bay, boat, fish swim or read a book on the beach,
