Surf Shack Vilano
About Surf Shack Vilano
HI! I am from Hawaii and my husband is from Minnesota. My family moved to St. Augustine eons ago, and we found it to be an enchanting town to raise our little one in. When we aren't looking after our properties, we love exploring off the beaten path," creeking" and other outdoor activities. We are vintage enthusiasts and love a good tiki bar. I am an on-location, media hair and airbrush makeup artist and my husband is in real estate.
Surf Shack Vilano purchased this House in 2010
Why Surf Shack Vilano chose Saint Augustine
Vilano Beach offered the layed back beach-lifestyle I grew up with - similar to a small town atmosphere, the neighbors all smile, wave and talk to you, you can walk to everything you need, and the sea treasure hunting on this beach is AMAZING!! Everything from gorgeous, huge conch shells, to shark teeth, to ship wreck items. The stars and sky are glorious at night, and we love drifting off to sleep with the windows open. We are very close to the St Augustine attractions, but feel like we are in another world once we cross back over the bridge - Our Oasis.
What makes this House unique
Location, location, location! The house is close to the beach, without suffering the noise of A1A. I adore walking and biking with my family around the island, going to the neighborhood park, then swimming at the beach! We are just over the bridge from the excitement of St. Augustine, yet it feels a world away. Multi tasking a bike ride or walk (down the beach or over the marsh boardwalk) with grocery shopping is always better than the alternative! I also love this property because it is so airy and bright. The open floor plan is great for the whole family to converse in.
We are strict with our NO pet policy.
we love well behaves children!

Christmas / Birthday Weekend
Our family loves St. Augustine, and we really enjoyed staying in your place on Vilano beach. It was very convenient and very nice to have the full availability of a home instead of a hotel room was wonderful. We hope to come back in the spring.
Great Location , Cozy & Clean Inside Home
We enjoyed our 2 night stay for the most part.
What we liked the most was the location, clean accommodations, cute beach decor and a good WiFi connection.
The property could use some minor improvements to make it a 5 star stay!
They really need new mattresses (they are old and worn- and have no support), new bathroom shower curtain, rod and hooks, (worn. shower hooks rusted, rod needs replaced), 1800 watt blow dryer would be improvement , the patio chairs & table are not made to actually dine at. It would be nice to be able to eat outside on proper seating. The deck had a wonderful view and is very spacious! The stairs do not have working lighting at nighttime as well as the driving way. Very dark when parking after sunset.
Kitchen has everything one needs to enjoy. However, the frying pans are very old and new non stick pans would be appreciated by most.
Also, we were charged and $85.00 cleaning charge, however, we were required to strip the beds, towels etc. and start they laundry. We left the place immaculate yet found the requirement odd.
The owner was very helped when we asked any questions about things to do in the area and responded on the HomeAway app rather quickly. We would recommend this property to others and appreciate the opportunity to express our review. Hope this helps the next visitors enjoy there vacation getaway even more than we did.
Thank you for the feedback Jill, we are truly happy you had a great trip! It seems that the salt air got ahead of us on the shower hooks, so we appreciate you bringing it up - we ran straight out and replaced them and the rod.
I do want to address the other things you brought up so future guests don't have ANY anxiety about staying here:
The mattresses were all purchased NEW 3-5 years ago, and the nature of being a vacation rental, they don't get much use. Also, each one has had a protective cover to keep them stain free since their purchase. Comfort/softness/firmness is all relative. I'm sorry they were too soft for you.
The pots and pan set is T-Fal brand and were purchased last year. Not many guests cook in the home, so they are still in very good condirion. We did have 2 extra (black) pans that are about 3 years old. I'm guessing those are ones you had a challenge with. I have removed them from the kitchen per your note.
The blow dryer is also fairly new and is full size, 1300 watts.
The deck furniture is as pictured and is wonderful for lounging, having a drink, and a casual dinner. Guests are always welcome to bring the dining chairs out to the table if it will enhance their experience.
Due to nesting sea turtles, the street lights are limited. We have both automatic solar lights on the stairs and 2 manual outdoor lights ( 1 for the deck/front door and 1 for the stairs/parking area ) which can be turned on / off from the carport and also, inside the home. If its a cloudy day, or guests are arriving very late, the manual lights are very helpful to navigateyour way up the stairs. Our guest's comfort is our priority and we are just a phone call away. Thank you again for bringing these things up so I could address them.
The house was great, in a quiet neighborhood. Kira was a very accommodating owner and the home was a close drive to downtown.
Great Place to Stay
Came in from Louisville and arrived very early morning(dark). Wondered if we had the right place. Once we came back and went inside I was very pleased. Spotless. Comfortable beds. Full kitchen and washer dryer. Electric stove and a large fridge.A shower out behind the house to wash off beach sand. A hose right by the front for rinsing feet. Any message I sent was answered quickly.
A great experience and will not hesitate to rent this place again.
Clean and comfortable, convenient to the beach and downtown St. Augustine. Great communication.
Stayed 2 nights for a getaway weekend with some buddies. The house is clean and comfortable with a nice open kitchen and living room area. Beach access is less 1/3 of a mile down the street, and it is an easy 5 minute drive into downtown St. Augustine. A Publix, liquor store, and a few good restaurants are just around the corner.
The owner was extremely pleasant and easy to deal with, and responded to all of my questions within minutes. I would definitely return to this house for future trips to St. Augustine.
Great place for a ladies weekend
The surf shack was a the perfect place for a ladies weekend. It is short walk to the beach where we enjoyed walking and looking for shark teeth. It is very convenient to shops and restaurants.
We loved sitting on the deck in the morning and talking and watching the birds.
We will be back
Spend days meandering down the beautiful, shell covered beach, treasure hunting for pre-historic shark teeth and other sea treasures. Horseback riding is another regular activity at our beach access. Located on the NE barrier island from historic St. Augustine, Vilano is the perfect get-away.
'Town Center' offers conveniences such as a new Publix grocery store, restaurants, dry cleaning, salon and a gas station - all within walking distance of home.
Vilano Beach is 'where the locals go' - For fun, enjoy a (bike friendly) water taxi into historic St. Augustine from our famous fishing pier. Spend time at the pier watching dolphins, fishing, or rent a jet ski from the Marina.
After a day of exploring our nation's oldest city, you will instantly relax as you head back over the ICW bridge to this quiet and tranquil oasis.
