Olive Grove Villa is set in a beautiful, peaceful location on a promontory overlooking the tiny, traditional village of Exantis, near Bali. It has breathtaking views of the valley below and mountains beyond, including Psiloritis and, on a clear day, the White Mountains.
Despite its quiet, secluded position, the villa is just three minutes away from Crete’s main highway giving easy access to all parts of the island. The beach resorts of Panormo and Bali are both only about 5 kilometres away.
Exantis is only 50 minutes drive from Heraklion airport and under 30 minutes from Rethymno. Chania airport is approximately 90 minutes away.
Olive Grove Villa
The villa is a 75 sq. m. tile-roofed bungalow built to a very high standard. It is furnished in contemporary Mediterranean style and fully equipped for holiday visitors. All rooms have beautiful high ceilings in natural wood. They all open onto patio areas and flower beds, with a mature olive tree standing proud on the south side. The whole plot is surrounded by a superb hand-crafted stone wall topped with wrought iron railings to a safe height.
The villa has two generously sized double bedrooms and a fifth bed or cot can be provided on request. The bathroom has a bath/shower and toilet, and also a washing machine. The kitchen has a full size stove with oven and four electric heating plates. There is a microwave and fridge/freezer. There is a hairdryer. Bed linen and towels are provided and changed weekly for guests who stay longer.
In the living area there is a three piece suite and a TV, DVD player and CD player/radio. The dining area will seat six people comfortably.
All rooms are air-conditioned.
There is a 7m (23’) x 3.5m (11’) x 1.2m (4’) swimming pool, which is maintained weekly and automatically filtered twice daily. Sunbeds and a sunshade are provided as well as a patio table and chairs for barbecues and al fresco dining.
The villa is reached down a small country road that winds through the olive groves. Car hire is therefore essential. The nearest petrol station is in Melidoni. Relatively cheap petrol can be purchased in Perama.
The nearby village of Melidoni has two well-stocked mini-markets. There are supermarkets, a bakery and a pharmacy, as well as art and craft and tourist shops in both Panormo and Bali. A wider range of non-tourist shops is available in the small market town of Perama, a 15 minute drive away. Fresh vegetables can be purchased at the greenhouses on the outskirts of Exantis.
Things to see and do:
Melidoni is renowned for its well, but more importantly for its fabulous cave, which is also infamous as the site of a massacre by the Turks in the 19th century. In Melidoni you will also find an olive oil factory whose American-Greek owner, Joanna, will be happy to show you round. Just outside Melidoni on the road to Agia you will see traditional charcoal burners in the fields.
Bali has five lovely, gently sloping sandy beaches in sheltered bays. Two have Blue Flag status. There are also nice beaches at Panormo.
Take a short drive to the village of Margarites which is packed with pottery shops. In some you can watch the potter at work.
In the taverna in Exantis itself there is some beautiful glassware for sale by a local artist.
The local countryside is full of wildlife. Goats roam the olive groves and you may see an occasional hare. Swifts swoop down to the swimming pool and buzzards and various birds of prey soar over the valley. You will probably spot gekkos - medium sized green ones and small yellow/orange ones.
As well as the two pharmacies mentioned above, Bali has a multi-lingual doctor on 24-hour call. If you are unfortunate enough to have a more significant medical problem, there is a good health centre in Perama or hospital in Heraklion.
Olive Grove Villa is a perfect place for a quiet, relaxing holiday in beautiful surroundings. It will comfortably accommodate two couples or a family of five and is equipped with all you need for an enjoyable stay.
