3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms on five quiet, wooded acres
About Jean Sylvia
I built this house in 1988 as a single mother raising my lovely daughter who now lives in California (much too far away)! Now married, I live in downtown Bar Harbor with my husband, across the street from my three lively and lovely granddaughters. As young girls, my daughter and her cousin spent countless hours combing the backwoods of our property and collecting moss. Their grand plan was to make wreaths to sell to the tourists - leading to their fame and fortune! The small hill where they found the best moss, they named 'Moss Mountain.' Although they never sold a wreath (I'm not even sure they completed one), they spent hours in our backyard playing, laughing and planning their futures, as little girls love to do. I'll always treasure those days and those girls, and it is this fond memory that gave rise to the name 'Moss Mountain Cottage.'

Why Jean Sylvia chose Town Hill
Mount Desert Island has been my home since I graduated from college (I won't tell you how long ago that was) and I love it here. During the summer I hike and bike the trails of Acadia, comb the beaches to collect sea glass and sea-tumbled rocks, and take in all the island has to offer in unique shops and gourmet restaurants. During our cold and snowy winters, I take early morning walks or snowshoe on the breathtakingly beautiful (and quiet) carriage roads, spend time with my family and friends, and read some great books I've been meaning to get to all summer. When I travel away for any length of time and start yearning to see the mountains of Acadia and smell the sea air as I cross the Trenton bridge onto MDI - that's when I really know how much I appreciate and love my island home.
What makes this House unique
I love the quiet and the privacy of the homes around Indian Point. Sitting on the back deck and listening to the evening chatter of frogs in the bog, the morning birds that wake you instead of an alarm clock, eying the deer as they shyly peak out from the woods, and taking in the beauty of a full moon when it rises above the giant cedars - will all contribute to your restful vacation on MDI.
No street shoes inside the house
No large parties - loud noise travels easily in rural areas.

Spotlessly clean and so comfortable with wonderful touches in every room. Conveniently locationed.
Would definitely recommend. We enjoyed coffee on the deck and a million stars by the fire pit. We loved our stay!
Nancy, her husband and friends were wonderful guests. Clean, tidy and great at communicating. We would love to host them again anytime they visit the Mount Desert Island.
Cozy and comfortable cottage
This was truly a home away from home, cozy and comfortable. The location is private and quiet, perfect for relaxing from busy and noisy every day life. Jean is a fantastic host and keeps the cottage clean and fully stacked. We enjoyed DVD and books collection as well as table games. May thanks to Jean for welcoming gifts. Over the years we stayed in many vacation rentals, and Jean’s cottage was the most comfortable.
Thank you Olga for your kind words. It was lovely meeting you and your family and I appreciated how well you took care of the cottage during your stay and how clean it was left upon your departure. We would absolutely love to host you and your family anytime you visit MDI in the future. You were five star guests!
Lovely home in private setting.
The cottage was exceptionally well equipped, clean and bright. Loads of extras (like dish washer pods, laundry detergents and body washes) were provided for back-up as well. The house was very comfortable and clean, the setting was very quiet. Would book again if returning to area.
Thank you Dan for this nice review. Dan and his family were great guests - very clean, terrific communicators, and left the place in great shape. We would welcome them back anytime they visit the island.
Moss Mountain Cottage is a wonderful home away from home for a visit to Mount Desert Island and Acadia National Park. The owner has thought of everything. From a plethora of towels to condiments in the refrigerator to bug spray! We’ve stayed at many properties through HomeAway and in the state of Maine and this is one of the best!
Thank you for such a nice review. We work hard to make sure that our guests feel as comfortable as they would in their own homes and it's always nice to hear that we've succeeded. We are rewarded by being able to attract wonderful guests like Jennifer and her family who have left the cottage as clean and tidy as they would their own homes. We couldn't be more grateful.
Comfortable, quiet, spacious.
My teenage daughter and I rented Moss Mountain Cottage for a quick mother-daughter trip. This was our first time to the area, to Acadia National Park, and to Maine and we were not disappointed. Jean was beyond helpful. She was in touch, but never invasive. She gave great suggestions for places to visit, trails to hike and favorite restaurants. The cottage was clean and very well-equipped. We had everything we needed to make our selves at home, eat in, and enjoy a relaxing long weekend. I'd return again in a heartbeat!
Lissa and her daughter were great guests and we would gladly rent to them again anytime they visit the area.
Little Cottage in the Woods
That is the name our granddaughter gave to Moss Mountain Cottage. So comfortable and relaxing after a long day of sightseeing on Mt. Desert Island and Acadia National Park. Jean has thought of everything to make this your home away from home including an arts and crafts basket for our 4 year old granddaughter which she loved making potholders on a loom! Moss Mountain is a beautiful home and I would highly recommend it to anyone looking to spend a stress free vacation on MDI. Thanks to Jean for everything! We had a wonderful time!
Cathy and her family were great communicators, very clean and tidy, followed all the house instructions/rules, and best of all they appreciated all that we try to do to make our guests feel welcome and at home. I would say they were the perfect guests and we would welcome them back anytime.
Moss Mountain Cottage, open year-round, is centrally located, no more than 15 minutes away from the entrance to Acadia National Park, the Ellsworth shopping centers, and all the picturesque towns and villages that make up Mount Desert Island. Our cottage is tucked away on five private wooded acres where you can relax after a long day of hiking, biking or cross-country skiing one of the many historic carriage roads or mountains of Acadia; after a more restful day taking in the breathtaking views atop Cadillac Mountain, cruising the waters of Frenchman Bay, or visiting the stunning Thuya, Azalea,, or Rockefeller Gardens. If you'd like to stay closer to home, only a mile from the cottage, you will find the Nature Conservancy’s Indian Point Blagden Preserve, where osprey nest and seals bask on the rocks at low tide. Great Long Pond - three miles from the cottage - is where each summer you can swim, canoe, kayak, launch your boat to water ski or fish, or to enjoy ice-skating in the winter. There is summer golfing or winter sledding at the historic Kebo golf course; Pirate’s Cove miniature golf and Wild Acadia Fun Park for the kids; Monday and Thursday evening band concerts on Bar Harbor's village green; and matinees or evening plays at the Acadia Repertory theater. In each of the island's picturesque villages you will find quaint shops where local artisans showcase their work, and any number of restaurants and bars that feature lobster and other locally harvested seafood dishes, paired with award-winning and locally-brewed beer or wine.
