After one week, we wanted to stay longer!

  • 5 of 5

It's hard to write anything new about La Scalea di Trastevere, as we had the same excellent experience that others have written about.

Things we especially liked: 1. Giovanni. He was exceptionally prompt in all communication, thorough in explaining all the details of the apartment and the neighborhood, helpful in answering questions & providing explanations, and leaving more than just the basic necessities, like giving us a large bottle of water and a bottle of wine. He arranged for a very early taxi to the international airport on our last day in Rome, which was much appreciated. And since the recycling/garbage effort in Italy is somewhat confusing - we faced this in each city we visited - he offered to take care of it for us if we had problems managing with our early departure. [In another city, my husband ended up carrying bags of recycling & garbage for 1/4 mile before he could find a deposit area.]

2. The apartment. It was extremely clean and neat, not always our experience with other apartments we have rented. Not only did it correspond exactly with the website description, but there were good reading lights over the bed in the master bedroom and washcloths for each guest, also a rarity.

3. Location. Others have noted that the apartment is in a quiet area of Trastevere. We did not have to use air-conditioning, but with the windows closed it was quiet by 11 pm. However, other areas of Trastevere were hopping, especially on the weekend with lots of people mingling out on the streets, so there was considerable street noise until quite late. Inside the apartment building itself, it was always very quiet.

For anyone interested in exercising, La Scalea means ladder. The building is several yards away from a huge "ladder" of steps, approximately 127 in all, going up to a different neighborhood. We went up and down them several times, figuring this was a good way to strengthen our legs. No need to find a gym or stair master in Rome. And we chose to walk everywhere, stopping for meals and snacks so it didn't seem so long. We took the #8 tram a few times, but mostly walked. If you're there on a Sunday, make sure you go to the mammoth Porta Portese flea market in Trastevere, held only on Sunday mornings, about 10 minutes away. Go early before there are so many people you can't walk through any more.

As for gelato, there's only one place for us: Fata Morgana, only 3 blocks away. Fabulous!!

Can't wait to return.

Great apartment to stay while exploring Rome

  • 5 of 5

This was a perfect apartment, in a beautiful neighborhood, to stay in while exploring Rome. It was clean, nicely decorated, and had many amenities which helped to make our stay very enjoyable. We wouldn't stay anywhere else if we returned to Rome!

Magical week in Rome

  • 4 of 5

My son and I were in Rome for a week's worth of sketching all that Rome has to offer. The location, though across the river from Rome, is a reasonable walking distance to all of our sketching sights. Despite our delayed flight, Giovanni still met us to review the apartment layout and conveniences. He also arranged the taxi to take us to the airport....very important as the taxi drivers in Rome seem to speak very little English.

One comment important point is that the apartment is quiet. No street noise nor noise from other building residents was heard. A good night's sleep always!!

I particularly love the Trastevere location....minutes away from Piazza San Cosimato and so many restaurants and cafes and the lively Trastevere ambiance. Would stay there again.

Clean, Comfortable, Convenient & Full of Character - Our Favorite Stay in Italy!

  • 5 of 5

Our family of three adults just returned from 10 days in Italy, staying in two different apartments - 4 days in Rome and 4 in Florence. I can honestly say Giovannis's La Scalea Di Trastevere was the best, hands down (even staying at a balcony apt overlooking the Arno in Florence!).

Giovanni met us at arrival to his apt, had the air conditioners on and cold water in the fridge. He walked us through the operations of the apt, gave directions to taxi/bus/tram transport + local grocery/market shopping and made us feel welcomed.

Although the kitchen is compact, it has everything needed for simple meals: stovetop, microwave, dishwasher, electric water kettle, and all utensils. We didn't cook since we ate lunches and dinners while out but we did have a lite breakfast of coffee, fruit and pastries each morning. Oh yeah, the washing machine is in the kitchen. We used twice, drying our clothes on the drying rack - a little different than we're used to, but it's part of the Italy experience and actually worked great.

The master bedroom with comfy queen bed has plenty of hang up space and storage with bedside lighting for reading + a full length mirror. The second bedroom has two twin beds, bedside table with lamp and shelves along one wall. Both bedrooms have wonderful large windows which we partially opened in the early morning hours to sleep with the cool Italian breeze.

The living room/dining area with large windows that open to the outside giving you an authentic "Italian view" has plenty of lighting, a table and chairs to eat and even a television. The Internet/wifi was strong which was important since I had to work remotely several times during our trip.

The bathroom, although small, was very clean with a great shower, plenty of hot water and a hair dryer.

We found several restaurants close by with great food and prices and especially liked the Bar Glorioso on the sidewalk down from the apartment for cappuccinos and a delicious bruschetta (open early). We really liked that we could walk to the Trastevere Squares easily in about 10-15 minutes.

If you want the authentic Roman neighborhood experience without the noise/hustle bustle of all things touristy or just calm at the end of a LONG day of walking and seeing the sites, then Giovannis's Scalea Di Trastevere might just be the place for you. For us it was the perfect place in Rome ... thank you Giovanni, we hope to return again!

Comfort. Convenience. Amenities. This Apartment Has It ALL !!! Book it now.

  • 5 of 5

This roomy two-bedroom apartment is steps away from the the center of Rome's liveliest neighborhoods.

The great news here is that it has SO much more than convenience going for it.

I just finished a one-month stay here and HIGHLY recommend it.

I've stayed in other apartments in Rome.

This one outdoes them all, really. I have no stake in this. I just know how hard it can be to find a nice place to rest at the end of a long day

Air conditioning...a summer essential in Rome.

WIFI...not as easy to find in Rome as you might expect.

Kitchen....there's a stovetop, fridge, dishwasher, kettle, coffeemaker, basics +++

Washer/dryer....even a rack for drying so you can pack light.

After a day of walking around the eternal city really all you want to do is fall into a comfortable bed and,

here, you will. A lot of hotels and apartments scrimp on mattresses and linens. The beds here are great for a good

Night's sleep. The bedding is changed weekly and the place is PRISTINE.

The apartment also comes with a vacuum and varied cleaning supplies.

Also worth mentioning, there are lots of outlets in every room. If you're working, like I was, bring converters.

A small family could stay here. The one challenge, a modern but small bathroom.

It worked really well for me and my guest but you might have to schedule shifts if the crowd grows

Trastevere is busy with restaurants, shops, street vendors and night life and having stayed in the middle of that

I prefer this apartment, which is about a block off the beaten path, very close but just quiet enough.

The taxi stand is nearby as are groceries, an open market for fresh produce, pharmacies and even a department store.

This apartment is in a building with permanent residents who are good neighbors and expect the same.

The landlord is caring, responsible and responsive. He addressed ALL my questions and concerns and, on top of

Everything else, he is very nice and speaks English.

I could rave on but I think I've covered the basics.

Yes, I would stay here again !

Enjoy Rome and your stay at La Scalea de Trastevere. Ciao.

The apartment is located in the Trastevere district at the base of the Gianicolo hill in a quiet and calm area next to the Scalea del Tamburino. The apartment is a few meters away from Piazza San Cosimato and Piazza Santa Maria in Trastevere. From here, you can enjoy a short walk trough the nice cobblestone streets of the Medieval Trastevere district and reach in 15-20 minutes some of the most famous city spots such as Campo Dei Fiori, the Pantheon, Piazza Navona, the Colosseum and Piazza Venezia. If you want to reach the heart of Rome by tram, there is a tram stop at a short walking distance from the apartment. From here, the high frequency line 8 will get you until Largo di Torre Argentina and Piazza Venezia in 5 to 10 minutes.
