Great chalte for ski vacation

  • 5 of 5

We were three adults on a ski-week and Chalet Sherlock turned out to have been a great choice of place to stay. The chalet was very much as described, rustic but well maintained and clean, with all the necessary amenities and a wonderfully warm and cosy ambience. The owner had provided a very long and detailed "welcome" document, which was immensely helpful in finding our way around the chalet and finding all the things we needed. It was also full of advice on local faculities, much of which we followed and found to be excellent: we rented our skis from Zig-Zags, as suggested, and got first-rate and very friendly service; we had a dinner at Chez Merie in the nearby village of Le Mirior, which was a spectacular experience that I would highly recommend to any adult group (probably not really suitable for young children). We cooked all our breakfasts and four of our dinners in the chalet, which had pretty all the facilities we needed. And we made lots of use of the excellent wifi provided. We skied at Espace Killy and Les Arcs. Never got around to trying the local slopes at the Ste-Foy Ski Station, so we'll have to come back for that.

If we come back to the same area next year, we would have no hesitation in staying at Chalet Sherlock again.

Thanks, Hannah and Kieran, for making your chalet available to us!

Perfect home from home!

  • 5 of 5

This was our first experience of the alps and we both agreed that Chalet Sherlock was the perfect introduction with every aspect exceeding our expectations.

The chalet was excellently equipped with practically everything we could have ever needed including everything from dishwasher, washing machine, to board games, DVDs, UK television. Most evenings were spent enjoying the fire with a BBQ and plenty of wine as the chalet was so comfortable we wanted to make the most of our time. The beds were so comfortable and had the most amazing views over the mountains. What a sight to wake up to! The beds are unbelievably comfortable, incredible tub to soak in after a long day in the mountain air and log burner that makes an evening an event.

Our visit was in May so being between seasons we didn't really know what to expect in terms of weather or activities however there was so much to do we will probably have to return to tick the rest off the list! Close to endless excellent hikes (we would particularly recommend Le Monal a beautiful Hamlet nestled in the mountains about 4hrs round trip from the ski station), white water rafting and biking all available.

Le Monal Hotel just down the mountain has a lovely bistro with great atmosphere and excellent house wine with good menu of pizzas, salads, steak & frites etc...so good we went back for a second night! Also recommend a drive out to Tignes where the mountain roads kept us very entertained in a new car, with lots of lunch options and beautiful lake nestled between the ski slopes. We enjoyed the après ski without accessing the slopes! There is a tourist office in Sainte Foy or a very helpful tour operator "Julie" at Tarentaise Tours on the high street who helped us out no end in suggesting walking routes and linking us up with other operators.

We visited as a couple and it worked perfectly for us but both agreed that it would be lots of fun as a group as there is plenty of space and all the facilities you could need. I am sure we will back!

Booking process and arrival procedures were very slick and easy. Made for a stress free break!

Thanks to the Sherlock Family!

Love Johnny and Jennifer

My new favourite ski holiday

  • 5 of 5

Chalet Sherlock was the best place I have stayed on a skiing holiday. It's perched on the mountainside in the tiniest of Hamlets among traditional homes and agricultural conversions. It's A very picturesque spot with uninterrupted views across the valley from the lounge and the master bedroom. If you are going to have a lazy day off the slopes these are the details that matter. I went with my father, who is a lazy skier. The living dining room is a cozy rustic affair that centres where it should, on the wood burner. The burner is a joy to behold and by far the most rewarding way to keep the place heated, we didn't need the electric heaters, the burner on low would stay lit all day while we were out then crackle back to life on our return. We cooked most nights in the very well equipped kitchen dining to the sounds of the stereo and crackling logs, then finished the evenings with a glass in hand staring at the flames. As there were only two of us we felt like kings strolling about the place, each with our own double bedroom and ensuite bathroom. Plenty more room for a bigger group. ideal for two couples. the downstairs loo means you could have someone sleeping in the lounge if you wanted. Such a lovely place we didn't want to leave the warmth and homeliness of the chalet. However we did get out there for the slopes which are great, uncrowded and uncomplicated. Shhh don't tell anyone. And we dined out at the top recommendation chez merie, which was a charming, delicious experience. The French owner chatted to us at length and told us how much she loves English customers, because like the slopes, we're uncomplicated. A first and nice to hear. If you have a car, like to be comfortable in beautiful surroundings and enjoy a ski holiday on your terms you won't beat this for the price.

Another Perfect Stay in St Foy

  • 5 of 5

This was our 2nd stay @ Chalet Sherlock & we will definitely be back !

Such a homely and comfortable place, great location and fantastic views in all directions.

The kitchen is brilliantly kitted out and sitting around the fire in the evenings is bliss. It was immaculately clean and impeccably maintained as always - can't wait to get back !

Lovely chalet, lovely resort.Recommended!

  • 5 of 5

Chalet Sherlock is beautifully located just a short hop from St Foy centre with breathtaking views. We found the chalet in excellent condition with everything we needed to make our stay both enjoyable and comfortable.

The bathrooms are exceptional and the kitchen is well equipped making it easy to cater for all. If you're lucky enough to have the spare time then the terrace is a lovely place to spend a lazy few hours basking in the sun which shines on Chalet Sherlock late into the afternoon. As a family with young kids we found we were equally happy on the terrace as the slopes. So much so we've been back to Chalet Sherlock twice and are planning on a third trip in 2013.

For the adventurous, and the conditions are favourable, you can even ski down to the chalet from Sainte Foy... we did it. Twice!

Sainte Foy is a fantastic resort that won't disappoint on all levels. The locals, a mixture of friendly natives and UK ex-pats, makes for excellent entertainment in the evenings. The resort caters equally well for beginners and experts alike with plenty of safe off-piste skiing and wide gentle pistes, tree-runs and fire roads to complement the well-groomed pistes.

Car: recommended

Sainte Foy is in the hearty of the Tarentaise Valley, and Vanoise National Park. For skiing, Sainte Foy has been voted number 1 in the world by the Sunday Times, describing it as 'an uncrowded gem'. Within 5 minutes are the mega resorts of Les Arcs and La Plagne, with Tignes and the Espace Killy just 8 minutes by car. The charming town of Bourg St Maurice with its weekly market is 15 minutes away. There is a swimming lake 20 mins away as well as full leisure facilities in Tignes and Bourg St Maurice. The Italian border is very close by and can be crossed in the summer via the Petit St Bernard pass - this is a stunning drive into the Aosta valley and the Italian side of Mont Blanc. Chamonix is located just the other side of the tunnel. Day trips to Annecy are a must with its charming town (known as The French Venice) and the amazing lake with swimming beaches, sailing, fishing, etc. Also nearby in the summer are some fabulous golf courses (Les Arcs, La Rosiere, Tignes).

Other Activities: white water raftng
