House, 2 Bedrooms + Convertible bed(s), 1 Bath, (Sleeps 4-5)

The cozy Mama Bear's Cabin up the hill from Papa Bear's Lodge and Baby Bear's Cottage (see listings #46584, and #72370), is available year round.

The cabin has two bedrooms and 1 bath. There is a queen-size bed, a nnn double bed and double pull-out futon (in living room) to accommodate up to 4 people. It is best suited for up to 4 adults or a family of 4 or 5. In the living room is a gas hearth stove. The kitchen is equipped with all the basics. Enjoy the large hot tub which awaits just off the back deck.

Some games and books are provided for your leisure. This is a great place for the honeymoon couple or small family. If you are booking Papa Bear's Lodge for a larger event, this is the perfect place for overflow guests who want a little more privacy.

Hiking and biking trails are right here. Gold Panning, Golf, miniature golf, and go cart rides are close by. Kayak and canoe rentals are available in Grass Valley for use on nearby Scotts Flat Lake or Rollins Lake. We are only 3.5 mies from the beautiful South Yuba River.

Please note that we are next to an 80 acre summer camp. During the months of May-August,camp is in session and you will hear 'happy' camp noises from time to time during the day. Quiet hours start at 9:30 p.m for the campers, 10:00p.m. for our cabin guests.

Swimming, tennis and a children's play ground are in Nevada City and Grass Valley. We are just a 45 minute drive to the nearest ski area for downhill or cross country skiing, and sledding. Downtown Nevada City is two and a half miles away, where you will find fine dining, wine tasting, great theater, musical entertainment, art galleries and a fun shopping experience in this charming historic gold rush town.

Historic Grass Valley is just another three miles away with more of the same, and we are 1 1/2 hours drive from either Sacramento or Tahoe.

Amenities: Down comforters on some beds (in winter). Satellite TV, DVD/CD player, DSL and wifi, gas hearth stove, ample parking. There is a phone for local calls. Cell phones do not work well here but you can text. This is a non-smoking property.

Activities: Theater, fine dining, wine tasting, musical events, shopping, galleries, hiking and biking, boating, fishing, swimming, tennis and other outdoor activities are all located within a short distance.

Come join us for the Fourth of July small town parade. It is wonderful, as is the Constitution Day parade in September. In June on Father's Day weekend come see the famous bike races down the middle of town. In July we have three 'Summer Nights', the last three Wednesdays in the month. The streets are closed to traffic and lined with food and craft vendors.

In July is the return of the Worldfest with 8 stages of music, children's programs, workshops, dance, artisans and international food.

Don't miss the Bluegrass Festival, Music In The Mountains, Halloween, Mardi Gras, Fall colors, etc., etc., etc.

Enjoy Victorian Christmas, the first three Wednesday nights, and the last Sunday before Christmas. You'll find artisans, food venders and all the shops open late. The gas streetlights, Victorian carolers, and friendly merchants make this the place to visit and shop for the holidays.

Area: The Yuba River,, with many deep pools and massive smooth boulders is only minutes from our home. A beautiful trail meanders along its banks for miles.

Lake Vera is a small lake surrounded by summer camps. Our cabins are located on 5 acres next to Camp Augusta. In the summer months (late May to mid August) you can hear 'happy camp sounds' as children enjoy swimming, zip lining and singing around the camp fire, then off to bed by 9:30, quiet hour.

We want your lodging experience to be most enjoyable. Part of that enjoyment comes from selecting the vacation property that best fits your needs. Mama Bear’s Cabin was built in 1985 and is 650 sq. ft., a good space for 2 to 4 people. The style is simple, clean and unpretentious. The kitchen is equipped with all the basics you need for cooking, but if you are a gourmet chef, this may not be the place for you. Some of the dishes are hand made pottery. Not everything matches. There is no dishwasher. Garbage needs to be disposed of carefully to avoid attracting those wild critters. Collecting compost scraps and recycling is required, and a conservative energy usage strongly encouraged. There is no central heat. There is a hearth stove, a wall furnace. and a window air conditioner. Please feel free to contact us at any time should you have questions or concerns.

About Drue and Rene

Drue is an avid runner, and René is a potter. We both share a love for acting and can be seen in local productions from time to time. Obi is our beloved 3 legged, one eyed poodle.

We love Nevada City and the wonderful community here and have lived here over 24 years. We love sharing information about the area with our guests.

Drue and Rene purchased this house in 2000

Why Drue and Rene chose Nevada City

All three of our cabins (Papa Bear's Lodge, Mama Bear's Cabin and Baby Bear's Cottage) are on the same property. The lodge was our family home for a number of years and we loved living here. When we decided to move into town next to Rene's studio, we knew others would really enjoy the lodge and smaller cabins. And we were right!

What makes this house unique

Privacy, nature, and a short drive to the beautiful South Fork of the Yuba River. It is a magical place. Wild turkeys, deer, foxes, coyotes, racoons, squirrels and the rare bear siting can all happen right here.

Fabulous

  • 5 of 5

We had an amazing time at the cabin . It is surrounded by trees with no one around . It is the perfect get away from the city , peaceful . We walked in and the gas fire was alight and it was already cozy and welcoming . The bath robes on the bed were a very thoughtful touch and were warm and soft for when we got out of the hot tub . We enjoyed a BBQ and just relaxing on the deck . It was our 30th wedding anniversary and it was perfect .

Thank you so much

Nice time in the woods

  • 3 of 5

The cabin was very nice sized and good price for 2 bedrooms (we only needed one). The kitchen was well supplied and the deck was great. Plenty of towels and everything we needed was there. The master bedroom mattress was a bit soft and not the most comfortable. The hot tub was nice. While the cabin is pretty private most of the year, when the nearby camp in in session, they feel like they are in your backyard sometimes. But a nice place and a great price.

Nice little getaway

  • 5 of 5

Cute cabin, the perfect size for me, my husband and our small dog. There were some activities going on a couple hundred feet away in Camp Augusta, but honestly you couldn't really hear it from inside the cabin, and it was quite amusing to hear people screaming things in unison AND you can see where they zipline from! We used the charcoal barbecue almost every night. Lots of amenities, so no need to worry about towels, shampoo, dish soap, toilet paper and stuff like that. We saw quite a few deer, a fox, and even a domesticated dog that randomly passed through. Loved sitting on the deck and reading a book in the sunshine. Overall a wonderful time.

A perfect getaway.

  • 4 of 5

This cabin gives you the feeling of seclusion. It is far enough away from town sothat it feels like a cabin the woods but close enough to make a quick trip to the store or restaurant. It was very clean and very cozy. The gas fireplace is a very nice touch.

Nevada City is a charming historical gold mining town at 2500' altitude, situated between Sacramento and Lake Tahoe. The people are friendly, and the landscape awesome. If you like the outdoors this is the place to mountain bike, hike, kayak or just take a stroll in the beautiful surroundings.

If you like history, there is plenty here. Originally built in the 1850's, Nevada City and it's neighboring town, Grass Valley, are historically preserved, with the streets looking very much as they did back in the days of the gold rush era. You will find beautiful old Victorian homes, gold mining museums, fine restaurants and live theater. You can even try your hand at gold panning, For a great day trip you can explore Lake Tahoe and the surrounding area.

Lake Vera is a small lake surrounded by summer camps. Our cabins are located on 5 acres next to Camp Augusta. In the summer months you can hear 'happy camp sounds' as children enjoy swimming, zip lining and singing around the camp fire.
