A friend suggested I look into this Vacation Rental opportunity after many people have used this property for anything from birthday parties, baby showers, Santa visits, bachlorette weekends, family visits and rentals rooms for the Grand American Trapshooting event.
This property became a way of expressing myself and my love for the older architecture and antiques of the the early 20th century. I hope that you enjoy how far this property has come in the last few years and I hope to continue to improve this property for many to enjoy in the future.
I am a Licensed Managing Broker and have been in the Real Estate Business for over 17 years. I currently own properties in Southwestern IL.
Connie Stellhorn purchased this house in 2005
I had been a Realtor for 9 years, when an investor of mine asked to see this property. It was under contract, but my investor insisted on seeing it as she was looking for rental units and believed that this home could be divided into multi-units. NEVER before had I experienced what I did that day! From the moment I walked in and knew I had to save her. Though there had been updates done to the proeprty in the 1970's, the years and termites had treated her badly. I had planned on saving this victorian charmer and then selling it.
During restoration, I uncovered an article about the original owner. Mayor Griggs presided over the city of Sparta from 1901-1907 and was an alderman of the town previously dating back to 1892. As you enter the home you will notice all of the feminine attributes, needless to say 'Adda' got her way when it came to furnishings and which makes this a true 'Victorian'. Thus, the reason I have named the home 'The Mayor & Adda's Mansion'.
Because of a turn of events and the changing real estate market, after completing the interior, I have used it as a Real Estate Office and residence. Now I hope to open it for other's to enjoy!
From the foyer entrance, you can not help but stare in awe as this property has one of the few ever built true self-standing bridal staircase with staing glass windows at the top of the 2 story foyer. The den sports a beautiful in-lain imported Italian cermaic tile embedded in a handcarved mirrored fireplace. The parlor is home to Baby Grand Piano along with many antiques and a sitting and dining area. This space can be utilized for business meetings or strategic planning sessions. Electronics can be provided if notified in advance. Hardwood floors throughout the house are dwarfed only by all the original woodwork, transoms, columns and built-ins. The kitchen and the first floor bath have been completely renovated and all GE Profile appliances were installed in 2007. A double convection oven electric stove and a dishwasher along with disposal, filter water, ice maker in the French door refrigerator equip the kitchen. An extra refrigerator in the garage for additional needs. Relaz in the 12-jetted corner tub with extended shower along with a deluxe vanity in this greek influenced bath.
Beautifully renovated older home, very comfortable and convenient location to WRSC. Large kitchen was great for cooking breakfast each day. Highly recommend for a relaxing stay.
We could not have asked for a better experience. We visited Sparta for the Grand American shooting championships. Quick drive to shoot, restaurants, stores, movies, etc. House was very spacious and clean. Plenty of extra linens and toiletries to make our stay comfortable. Connie was very helpful and responsive. Would definitely stay here again. Thanks Connie!
What a beautiful home! There were many added features in the house that made it 'home' for us while we stayed in Sparta for our family reunion. The kitchen was well stocked with staples and condiments, so it wasn't a chore to prepare a meal there. I think my favorite place was the third floor where our grown children could relax and enjoy being together without disturbing the rest of the family. This is a very clean home that is well maintained, and we really appreciated all the work the owner did to make our stay enjoyable and comfortable!
My husband and I stayed while he was participating in the Grand American trap shooting contest. The home is beautiful, well maintained, very clean, is fully furnished for cooking your own meals. The owner is extremely accommodating to make your stay enjoyable. It is located in a peaceful neighborhood with easy access to everything. We highly recommend this place and would stay again.
