About the property

Sleeps 6-10

Relax and enjoy your vacation at this newly remodeled home on your own private 2 acres and 200' of pristine Lake Michigan shoreline This Cape Cod style home has a coastal cottage feel with hardwood floors, painted woodwork, granite countertops and tall vaulted ceiling.

The exterior is all cedar including the large relaxing deck overlooking Lake Michigan. Majestic Cedars, Hemlocks, and Maples tower around the home.

The shoreline boasts a great view with shallow water making it great for kids.

You can take in the beautiful views from the large wrap around deck or stroll down to the water's edge where we have additional seating and table. Relax and enjoy your morning coffee with gorgeous sunrises. Then finish your day off with your favorite beverage and take in the reflective sunsets.

You can go for walks along the shoreline, skipping stones along the way or walk down the private drive viewing the abundant wild flowers and beautiful woods. Watch for various wildlife such as Deer, Turkey, Wood Chucks, Eagles, Swans, Pelicans and many more woodland creatures. Walk a little further and explore the Heins Creek Nature Preserve, with it's winding creek that flows between Kangaroo Lake and Lake Michigan.

You can enjoy gathering around the fire pit by the shoreline for roasting marshmallows and telling your favorite stories beneath the bright starry sky.

The location is perfect; not in the middle of the noisy busy part of the county, yet centrally located and close enough to get most places in under 10 minutes.

Enjoy the abundant recreation of Door County such as; winery tours, golf, kayaking, zip lining canopy tours, Cana Island light house tours, performing arts, galleries, world class salmon and walleye fishing, hiking, wind surfing, sailing, diving on shipwrecks, romantic sunsets, and ongoing festivals. There are also endless dining opportunities to experience.

A great place in Baileys Harbor to check out is Lake Shore Adventures. They have glass bottom kayak tours of ship wrecks, Salmon fishing charters, zip lining canopy tours at Ridges Sanctuary, and lots of rentals (kayaks, jet skis, bikes, pontoon boats). Their office is located in downtown Baileys Harbor and they have a great website.

You'll find yourself relaxed and very comfortable in this home away from home without breaking the bank. We also have a similar remodeled home between Baileys Harbor and Sister Bay with beautiful views of Cana Island. This home also has a 5 star rating, VRBO # 699521.

PLEASE READ RENTAL AGREEMENT.

*** All stays less than 1 week or overlapping designated turnover day during peak season are subject to approval. We only book weekly during July and August unless there is an odd date open.

About Chris

Our family recently purchased this beautiful property and had it remodeled with new wood floors, kitchen cabinets with granite tops, air conditioning, carpeting... and the list goes on. We fell in love with this location in Door County long ago and built our own home less than a mile from here.

Chris purchased this house in 2013

Why Chris chose Baileys Harbor

We love this area of Door County with its pristine shorelines, mature trees and abundant wildlife. Door County resembles the Atlantic Coast of New England with its rugged limestone shorelines and bluffs.

This home is located away from all the noise and congestion of other areas yet is conveniently located to most activities of Door County in less than 10 minutes.

We love outdoor activities such as going to the beach, hiking endless trails, kayaking or paddle boarding by the light houses and bays, world class King Salmon, Small-mouth Bass and trophy Walleye fishing, golfing, awesome kiteboarding and its all right here without the noise and congestion of traffic.

There is also very fine dining in all of the towns in Door County wether you like steaks and seafood, Italian or a Friday fish fry.

Door County boasts several wineries as well as art and theatre entertainment. Every weekend there is a festival in one or more of the nearby towns. We find that one summer is not enough time to take it all in, but we love trying.

We are very excited to be able to offer such a great property for you to enjoy your vacation at and we care about your visit being memorable.

What makes this house unique

The open great room with many windows and views of the water make this home ideal. Step outside through the double doors onto the huge cedar deck and take in the beauty of the large trees and sounds of the waves on the shore.

Go for a long walk down the private drive that leads to this home and pick Thimble Berries or go further and explore the nature preserve at the end of the road.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Such a beautiful view, coffee in the morning never tasted so good! The house was amazing and included everything we needed. We hope to be back next year! Thank you!!

Wonderful Getaway

  • 5 of 5

We thoroughly enjoyed our 3-4 day stay at this Lake Michigan cottage. The house has been nicely remodeled and was clean and comfortable. The size worked well for two couples, with two nice sized queen bedrooms and two baths on the main level. While the baths are not attached to the bedrooms, they are conveniently located just outside each of the bedrooms. The owners are very responsive and quick to reply. Chris and Robin...thank you so much for your hospitality and for sharing your lovely cottage with us.

Beautiful peaceful setting.

  • 4 of 5

We enjoyed our stay. If you want solitude and privacy this is the place for you. Neighboring homes are barely visible through the trees. The newly decorated interior is lovely. The beds were comfortable. The kitchen was well-supplied. Getting to the beach requires descending a difficult stairway which is difficult for seniors and small children. The beach is a rocky one with no sand. It was quite windy on the shore and the "surf" was turbulent so we didn't go in the water nor did we use the fire pit. Perhaps on a calmer day swimming would have been possible. The cool weather allowed us to sit on the large deck without mosquitoes, heat, or humidity.

A few suggestions:

The living room does not have ample lighting. At night or on an overcast day reading is difficult. Brighter bulbs or more lamps would be helpful.

It would have been helpful to have copies of menus of local restaurants in the house.

The shower head in the bathtub was weak. That may be because a large amount of water was coming out of the tub spigot. The diverter doesn't appear to be working properly.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your review and suggestions. We are glad you enjoyed the stay. We added a railing to steps to shoreline. Most of Door County shorelines are rocky. The lights have dimmers. I will look into the light concern. Menus at restaurants are always changing. It is best to look online for current restaurant menus. We hope you visit us again. Chris and Robin.

Bad experience

  • 1 of 5

When we arrived, the entire property was swarming with an infestation of May flies, or Midges. We were not warned about this prior to arrival. We had to run from the car to the house, and hundreds of them got into the car while the door was open. You couldn't even breath without inhaling a mouthful of the bugs. We came there to have a special lake retreat and spend time outdoors for my wife's birthday, and we couldn't set foot outside. The deck and seating outside were also covered in bug carcasses. There was no way we could stay there. After a 4 hour drive there, we had no choice but to turn around and drive 4 hours back home. We spent a huge amount of money for a 3 day stay, and we could not stay there. We called to request a refund, but we were only offered a rebooking in late fall during the post season. We are not interested in that. We are out all of this money, and our vacation to Door county was ruined. We feel it would only be fair to at least receive some sort of partial refund, given we never stayed or used the cottage.

Owner's Response: We live only live a few houses away, and can flatly say that what you are describing is a huge exaggeration. Yes there are May fly hatches throughout all of Wisconsin near the water. These hatches are very short and they disappear in the late evening. In fact the next day they were basically gone. If you had stayed the night (when the bugs disappear) you would have enjoyed an amazing weekend. In fact our other lake home nearby got a 5 star review for the same time period with the same May fly hatch. May flies do not bite, disappear at night and have a very short life. We are reasonable people and offered you another stay during our off season but never heard back from you. Out of more than 6 years of rentals you are the first guest to submit such a low review. I am sorry you feel the way you do and would recommend that any guest who has concerns about uncontrollable events like a May fly hatch purchase additional rental insurance that is available through VRBO.

Baileys Harbor has 2 beautiful public sand beaches
Car: necessary

Baileys Harbor is conveniently located among many of the Northern Door County communities. We boast over 6,000 acres of natural areas to explore including the Ridges Sanctuary. A favorite activity is the new zipline overlooking the Ridges Sanctuary. We go every year and it's always a great time! You can hike, bike and kayak to your heart's continent around Baileys Harbor.

There are three lighthouses in Baileys. Cana Island just north of town is open to the public and you may even climb to the top of this working light house. Another is the Bird Cage light house on a private island in Baileys that can be viewed up close by Kayaking or taking a boat tour from Lake Shore Adventures. Then there is the light house that is now part of the Ridges Sanctuary with a long boardwalk leading up from the public beach.

There is world class King Salmon and Rainbow Trout fishing off Baileys Harbor. Catch your trophy or at least some fine table fare for the grill during your stay. Again see Lake Shore Adventures for Charters or the latest fishing report if you have your own boat.

On a windy day go almost anywhere in Baileys and watch the kite boarders doing there acrobatics across the waves. There can be a dozen kites going at any given time.

If your real adventurous you can snorkel or dive various ship wrecks scattered across the Lake Michigan bottom. Again see Lake Shore Adventures for scuba and snorkel equipment, guided tours, or glass bottom kayaks to view the wrecks.

There are endless things to do in DC no matter what you prefer to do. One of the best parts about staying at our home is the location. It is tranquil and relaxing yet convenient to all the attractions. Enjoy your activities during the day and come home to peace and relaxation.
