Best location, 4 bedroom, new kitchen, spacious South Battery home and garden

Licensed B&B - We offer coffee and wine upon check-in but no meals are included in the stay. We also do not allow/tolerate events/venues as this is a wonderful and unique opportunity to enjoy being able to see Charleston more as a resident than a tourist and we expect proper respect to be given as such.

This is an authentic Charleston 'single-house' (c 1795) which means a Charleston house that is a single room in depth, designed to catch the ocean breezes. The builders of this property were in the shipping business and a wharf was built into the river to accommodate the owner's ships. Property taxes at that time were based on a front footage assessment and the typical single house was placed so that the narrow side of the house would be on the street side. This property was an exception in that the long side of the house faces South Battery which made it even more accessible to the prevailing summer southwest breezes. The two piazzas on the south side provide a dual purpose: to provide a comfortable place to enjoy the afternoon breeze and sunsets and to provide shade for the house itself from the afternoon sun.

On the main floor is an elegant dining room with beautiful hand made mahogany table, sideboard, and hunt-board. Just across the central hall is a less formal living room. It is furnished with comfortable upholstered sofa and chairs and accented with fine antiques including a mahogany chest, fold top desk, French farm table with 6 chairs and a magnificent highboy. The new kitchen with marble counters, lovely light filled windows on three sides, all new appliances and conveniences is accessed through two nine foot entrances from the living room. All of these rooms open onto the main floor piazza and offer wonderful opportunities for family fun and entertaining. A gracious central stairway leads from the piazza to the large and lovely Charleston garden.

The next floor houses the main bedrooms, baths and closets. The two large bedrooms with four poster mahogany King Bed in Master and Queen in Guest Room and adjoining bathrooms open onto the upper piazza overlooking the garden and Charleston Harbor.

The upper floor consists of two large dormer bedrooms with wonderful windows on the north and south sides. Between these rooms is a bath with a shower. All have windows providing a spectacular panoramic roof top view of the landscape below.

The garden is spacious and charming. The areas adjoining the house are terraced in old Charleston bricks and provide fabulous area for containers of flowering plants. The planting in the main garden is a balanced mixture of evergreens which provide shape, texture, and definition on a year round basis, and flowering shrubs and plants which provide a bouquet of color and scent as the seasons evolve. In the center of the front garden is a shallow reflecting pool with an Italian fountain. The fountain is automatically lighted at night and bathes the whole area with the ambiance of warm light and gurgling sounds. It is completely private from the street and fully enclosed and offers wonderful opportunities for entertaining or for children playing.

Very near prominent streets such as Church, Meeting, King and Legare Streets all are within very short walking distances to the property. White Point Gardens and the Harbor are within walking distance of the house. The house is in easy walking distance to the historic house museums, antique shops, art galleries, boutiques and famous restaurants.

We are a retired couple who raised our 3 children in this house. In 2001 we sailed our boat to Europe. We now spend part of the year on our boat in Europe and other part of the year in Charleston. We have so much space in our home that we enjoy offering some of the space for rent as a B&B (no breakfast)

Our overall impression of the property was that it was even better in person than we saw in the pics

My family LOVED our stay in this beautiful home. The history of the home was intriguing. The location was amazing, right on the Battery with an easy walk to the ocean or downtown Charleston. Our entire family form 4 years old to the grandmother thought the accommodations were fabulous. The back yard veranda and lush green yard and fountain gave us space to play, enjoy and relax. The HVAC worked perfectly, even in the South Carolina heat and humidity. That is always so important in the summer. The lush linens on all the beds made for a phenomenal good nights sleep every night. I can't say enough great things about this home. If we are in Charleston again, we will definitely stay there again.

Exceeded Expectations!

Our stay at the Bennett's beautiful South Battery home exceeded expectations in every way. It was as lovely as the vrbo pictures portrayed and the location was perfect. We walked to nearly everything we wanted to do in Charleston, including eating at many of the City's famous restaurants. Our only disappointment was that we failed to block out enough time to simply relax on the back porch, where you can enjoy a quintessential Charleston South of Broad garden, with a beautiful view of sailboats cruising by on the Ashley River. We shared the house with two other couples and all agreed that we should have planned more free time to enjoy the tranquil setting. The home was well appointed with everything we needed in the kithchen, and in all the bedrooms and bathrooms. And, the third floor has it's own thermostat, so it was just as comfortable as the rest of the house. A bonus to our stay was meeting the owners Jaqueline and Bill Bennett, who stay in a gorgeous appartment on the first floor when they happen to be in town and have renters in the main part of the house. Their agent, Jamie Malony, was extremely helpful and welcoming throughout our stay. This house was perfect for three mature couples who were celebrating a couple of significant birthdays. I would recommend it wholeheartedly. All six of us would absolutely stay there again. There is no reason to second quess renting this house. It is a great choice all the way around.

Steeped in history, modern amenities

What a fantastic experience in the Holy City. We felt like real Charlestonians during our short stay, walking to the post office, the market, restaurants and the park on the breezy spring evenings. The historic home and antique furnishings paired with the modern kitchen amenities were fantastic.

The owners were so very kind and hospitable, and Jamie, the property manager, had so many great suggestions for the sights around town. We'll be booking at another property of theirs on our next visit!

Historic Charleston

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at this beautifully decorated, historic home. The verandas and garden offered our family of seven, many places to relax and enjoy each other's company. The property listing is as described; well-maintained and clean. The home owners were very helpful and fun to get to know. The home's location was superb; conveniently located to Charleston's beautiful sites, restaurants and shopping. We spent Easter week and celebrated four March birthdays while staying in Charleston. It was fun to see the Charleston carriages go by the house and wave to other visitors. It was the perfect home and vacation! We hope to stay again and highly recommend this property.

Beautiful large home in a perfect Charleston location

Loved the house---which is beautiful, unique, and all that a historic Charleston home should be. The owners, who travel extensively, happened to be here and they were lovely people---helpful with details about the house and able to share its history. The location was perfect and an easy walk to "downtown". As others have noted, the property and gardens are beautiful. We especially enjoyed being out on the porches. The 3rd and 4th bedrooms are on the top floor and while lovely, they do have a sloping roof and the bathroom that services them is small. The other 2 bedrooms are huge and have lovely bathrooms--and there is another large bath with tub on the 1st floor. The house is very clean and well cared for and the kitchen is amazingly well-equipped!

Beautiful Historic Home

I traveled here with my family (husband, parents, mother-in-law, brother and sister-in-law) and it was divine. The home was spacious and well kept and the backyard was like a dream. With so much to do in the Charleston area, we had the best of both worlds -- being able to walk to downtown attractions on King and East Bay as well as relaxing at 'home' on the porch. The property management contact was also very accommodating and kind. I would highly recommend this home for a family vacation!
