Reinvented from an original fishing shack to a lovely 3 bedroom vacation home.
About Susan Danielson
I am recently retired professor of American Literature from Portland State University. My family moved to Oregon in 1974 and on our many trips to the coast we all dreamed of owning our own cabin. Now that my children are grown and my grandchildren live so far away I am so pleased to have a space to which I can invite them all to share some family time. To make this possible for us, I decided to rent the house for vacation times - mostly I rent to friends and colleagues. To keep cleaning costs reasonable it is very important that a guests follow the instructions when leaving the house. If you decide to rent, I hope you will respect these rules to keep the house available for more visitors. THANK YOU!
Susan Danielson purchased this Cottage in 2000
Why Susan Danielson chose Manzanita
Visiting a good friend in Manzanita, I always passed this little shack, set back from the road - it was painted a dark brown with brown and yellow checked curtains and though apparently abandoned, it looked inviting to me. During a particularly difficult health crisis of one of my children we passed this cabin with a For Sale sign. Perhaps just to feel empowered I called and placed a bid on the property! Oh heavens, it was mine!
What makes this Cottage unique
Next to birthing three children, Sunbursts Cottage is my most creative achievement. I had assumed I could just move right in after the sale went through, but when we tried to level the floor, the porch and plumbing fell out! The next two years my partner Harris, a construction engineer, and I, totally remodeled this little space and just 10 years ago completed an expansion. I love to come here on my own or with friends and family but I also love renting it to others to enjoy. I sometimes bring work - the quiet and the accessibility of food and hiking trails provide a great environment for my online teaching. but even better, I just relax - read, walk, drink wine and visit with neighbors.

We love Manzanita. This little house was very cozy. Our three year-old appreciated the toys and the kitchen is great for family meals. It’s located so close to town that we were able to ditch our car and walk everywhere we wanted to go. It was fun to watch the chipmunk rob the bird feeder on the deck. Only thing missing is a hot tub!
Thanks for your comments and support. This is just the kind of review that makes my heart sing!
Love this !
Another wonderful stay here
I Look forward to doing it again next year
Slice of Paradise.
We had a wonderful time. Thanks for the furnishments. Very cute town. Nice quiet neighborhood. Overall great but the home could use a good cleaning causethe cobwebs and ants were starting to take over.....which all added to the adventure! Thanks again.
Great Location Cozy Home
We had a fantastic time and enjoyed the stay. Great location walking distance to all the shops and restaurants in Manzanita. Cozy private setting surrounded by trees. Thanks again!
Thanks. Sunbursts is a special place cared for by great folks!
Mid week getaway
My wife and I stayed down there with my older parents and our daughter. The cabin was cute and rustic with lots of personality and charm. The bathrooms are small, Nd one of the showers is quite short, but we were overall impressed by how much space we had for all of us. The outside decks add to that sense of space. The cabin is a short walk to town and the beach, but quiet and woodsy as well.
Great cottage, close to beach and downtown
Clean and cozy cottage, short walk to beach and to downtown Manzanita. Plenty of space and places to hang. Well-stocked kitchen -- easy for cooking in. Would stay here again!
Sunbursts Cottage, 1011:
Manzanita is a small oceanfront town located just off Highway 101 and close to two other small villages, Nehalem and Wheeler. With only 30 rental properties, Manzanita is always a restful place to take a vacation. On its main street, Laneda, you will find restaurants [the wonderful Bread and Ocean, delicious Mexican food, and pizza and ice cream parlors], a natural food store and two other grocery stores that provide fresh and seasonal foods. Just 3 miles south of Wheeler [6miles from Manzanita in total] is a fish marina, Kelly's, where you can buy live crab, oysters, and clams. Yoga classes are offered in both Manzanita and Nehalem almost everyday of the week. Just south in Nehalem and Wheeler [2-3 miles] are a winery, kayaking rentals, antiquing, and sewing center. In Nehalem the community center has a full service gym and a swimming pool. Along the 7 miles of coast find hikers, wind surfers, kite boarders, and great kite flying opportunities. A pie shop and restaurant are just off Highway 101 on Manzanita Ave.
But perhaps the most restful activity is found walking along the many miles of beach or making a campfire as the sun goes down.
