4 Bedroom, 3 1/2 Bath Lake Front Home
About Colleen Carey
I grew up on Lake Manitou and now live in Southern California. I have fond memories of my youth and the times I spent on Lake Manitou so purchased this home in 2005 as a way of staying connected to the Lake.
Why Colleen Carey chose Rochester
While my parents home was on the east side of the lake and was beautiful, I chose the west side of the lake and this home in particular for several reasons. The sun rises on the lake side of the house so sitting out on the patio or in the screened porch area with a cup of coffee watching the sun rise and the birds and wildlife awaken is spectacular. We also don't have the glare of the sun over the lake at then end of the day since the lake side of the house faces east, so whether you enjoy sunrise or sunset, it's equally enjoyable! Since we are off the beaten path at the end of Wolf's Point Drive, there is little traffic so strolling Wolf's Point is quiet and pleasant. Plus, we are situated close to the head of the lake which offers abundant opportunity to observe wildlife.
What makes this House unique
Our property features a 3 car garage so-- lots of storage space. We use the 3rd stall for storage so you will have the use of 2 stalls for your vehicles and/or equipment. The property also features plenty of places to park cars given the large driveway serving the 3 car garage and the additional parking area near the entrance to the gated side yard. Parking at lake properties is often limited--but not here!
Minimum age of primary renter:30

Over priced and was shown by realtors during our stay
House is outdated, overpriced and during our visit we had three groups of strangers walk through the property with a real estate agent. The house is currently for sale and was shown to prospective buyers when we were there. One of them locked us out (we only had a garage code) when we were away. Another walk-through was during our infant's nap. The owner was unapologetic and did not warn us in advance that listing agents would be popping in.
The house has 1970s décor with a roll of paper towels to dry your hands. The toilet had to be fiddled with after every flush as well.
The property manager, on the other hand, is kind, helpful and prompt (when we got locked out by the realtors).
Our family had a wonderful vacation but it was in spite of this house, certainly not because of it. Rochester has a very enjoyable lake, some surprisingly good places to eat and is very affordable but I would recommend staying elsewhere on your next visit to Lake Manitou.
I'm sorry but I think this couple had personal issues causing them to want a shorter stay than they had booked. They are irritated as they chose to arrive a day late and leave a day early and asked me to refund 2 of their 4 nights stay which I saw no reason to do-- given they made the decision to arrive late and leave early during the week of their stay. This renter wrote a letter of complaint to VRBO when I did not refund 2 of their 4 nights and my response with the facts to VRBO allowed VRBO to confirm my rating as a host with a stellar rating and deny their request for VRBO to get involved. This is obviously their retaliation for that My response to their specifics is: 1) The pictures on line are totally representative of the house--if they thought it was outdated they shouldn't have booked it. 2) Each bathroom has multiple sets of bath/hand towels and washcloths that match and were purchased two years ago. Someone put a roll of paper towels in each upstairs bathroom which I noted when I arrived after they departed so perhaps it was this renter's choice to add a roll of paper towels to the bathrooms but there are plenty of nice towels for use by guests. 3)The house was listed for sale in early July, long after they booked and there were 3 showings (not 3 groups of strangers walking through) which were booked by the listing agent with 24 hours advance notice. Each group was accompanied by their agent and walked through the house quickly from what my listing agent's records showed. My agent did not attend one of the showings (which was in violation of her contract and she has now corrected that) and the buyer's broker inadvertently locked the door to the garage on her way out. When the renters returned to find the door locked, they called my property manager who lives 2 doors down the street so she was able to rectify that immediately and did. I will also share that there is a beautiful stone patio with comfortable patio furniture on the lake side of the house which most people find very pleasant so would have been a very viable place to spend the 10 or 15 minutes during the showings. 4) I just spent10 days at the house--the toilet they reference in the powder room on the main floor is only 2 years old and we found nothing wrong with it. I will agree with them that Lake Manitou is a great lake for boating/water and jet skiing and fishing and there are numerous good/affordable restaurants. Hopefully our VRBO site speaks for itself!
Close to home get-away
Lake front home was just what we were looking for. Since we had our own boat the dock was very convenient. Home does need some updating, but it was nice as a rental.
Nice place, recommended
The property is very nice and well-kept. We really enjoyed the space and the neighbors are super nice. Water is pretty weedy at the dock. We had an issue with a door that a child locked and no-one had a key. It is an easily addressed issue, so I hope they take care of it.
A bit picky on the checkout and claimed we used too many linens, even though we did a whole load of laundry before we left. Got charged part of our deposit for extra laundry.
I was sorry to have to keep a portion of their security deposit, but In thirteen years of vacation rentals thru VRBO I had only had to keep deposit money once prior. This deposit that was kept went to compensate the property manager and cleaning lady as both spent extra time not only with the locked bedroom situation (that had never happened in the 13 years previous) but more due to the extreme amount of linens used and scrubbing required of furniture and carpeting following checkout. The use of old comforters (presumably to make up extra beds on floors as it was very hot so not required for sleeping) and quantity of towels led all to believe there were more than the 6 adults and 4 children staying that booked the house. They also left the house unlocked and exterior flood lights on at departure.
We enjoyed our stay, the patio looking out over the water was such a blessing. fun and good memorie
The location was exactly what we wanted. The kitchen was stocked well and appliances were nice. Very comfortable home.
Lake Manitou (5 stars)
It was so nice to be back home for a visit with family and staying at this house. There is history which made it even more special.
I can think that we were to stay here.
Lovely home perfect setting.
Beautiful home in a great location. Very clean and wonderful host.
Thank you, Craig. We're glad you enjoyed your visit to Rochester and hope you will return for another stay!
Our home is located on beautiful Lake Manitou. We face the lake and are located on quiet Wolf's Point Drive which is a great area for walking or bike riding without traffic. Access to the scenic 42 mile Nickel Plate bike path is very close to the house. Or just bike or walk the scenic country roads which are also easily accessible from the house. Explore the head of the lake for incredible bird watching and wildflowers. You can kayak or go tubing on the lake although we do not have a kayak or a tube--you would need to bring your own.
