About Sara Brant & Steve Gangestad
We are Sara and Steve, a university researcher and professor currently residing primarily in Albuquerque, New Mexico. We have regularly recreated, relaxed, and revitalized in the Ouray area for years and, indeed, were married just off of Bear Creek trail, high above the Uncompahgre gorge south of town. We recently bought this house to spend more time in the region doing things we love, introduce our young son to the joys brought by outdoor adventure and beauty, share good times here with family and friends, and perhaps ultimately adopt this place as our primary residence. On a seasonal basis, we’re also happy to rent our home to visitors. Whether you’re just now discovering and exploring the Ouray region or, like us, have been revisiting it for years, we very much hope you enjoy your stay.
Sara Brant & Steve Gangestad purchased this House in 2012
Why Sara Brant & Steve Gangestad chose Idlewild Estates
We had looked to buy a piece of this area for years. When we stepped into Bear House and experienced its spacious warmth, private feel, and breathtaking views, we fell in love with it.

Great place to stay
We had a great time in Ouray. The bear house is a great place to stay. It’s very well equipped and the views are fantastic.
Great mountain escape
My family and I enjoyed staying here. It was removed from the city yet close enough to enjoy the activities. The house is clean and provides a cozy cabin feel while large enough for the family to have their own space. I recommend this property to anyone who wants to enjoy the beauty of nature.
It was great, couldn't have been better. Beautiful home and surroundings! Wonderful, helpful hosts for our third year at Bear House.
Awesome views from a secluded location near town
This experience was like staying with friends. The owners make you feel welcome in their home. The house is well stocked with the essentials you would need and you are close to two towns for groceries.
My wife and I have family near by so we have been coming to this area for over 30 years and renting homes for the past 12, this one is near the top of the list for us. Highly recommend if you are in the area.
Nice location beautiful views
Appreciate them opening their home and giving us opportunity to enjoy time in the mountains!!!
Great place to stay!
Beautiful view! Just minutes from Ouray or Ridgway. Great setting. I had some issues reserving the place due to my technological ignorance but the folks were so understanding and went above and beyond to help me! Great little library of local history and attractions.
Ouray is widely renowned as the Jeep Capital of America. Old mining roads, some passing historic ruins, abound in the San Juans. In winter, Ouray transforms into the Ice Climbing Capital of America, highlighted by the climbing park in the town's box canyon. The area is also well-known for its splendid hot springs, whether enjoyed at a public pool in Ouray or private resorts (such as the Wiesbaden in Ouray or Orvis Hot Springs near Ridgway).
