Villa Colombai is a luxury property in Tuscany, more than 100 years old. From 1928 to 1958 the Villa was used as a primary school for Orentano’s children, for this reason the property is well known in Orentano under the name of “Le Scuole Vecchie” (the old school).
Villa Colombai is located in the village of Orentano, in a borough named Colombai, only 18km away from Lucca. The villa has been recently thoroughly restored and equipped with an elegant swimming pool, entirely lined with authentic “travertine” stone, and filled with salt water. Moreover it has a pleasant whirlpool area on one side, amusing and refreshing. The luxury swimming pool measures 12 x 6 m, and varies from 1.10m to 1.60m of depth. By the pool there is an external warm shower to wash off the salt as soon as you come out of the pool. Around the pool there are parasols, deck chairs, sun beds and tables to sunbathe, relax and read. You can also have fun playing table tennis, table football or soccer in the field equipped with goals that is part of the large enclosed property of Villa Colombai. There is also a playground area for small children.
Near the kitchen there is also a wonderful very large veranda with a large table and chairs, where you can sit and eat together, or play cards after dinner. The veranda roof is made of wood, whereas the table is made of travertine stone and the barbecue will make your evenings unique. The garden is very large (12.000 sq.mt.), always well looked after and totally fenced to guarantee your privacy and safety, especially of your children and family pets.
The villa is equipped with every comfort. There is a hi-speed internet Wi-Fi connection, both inside and outside the villa and there is an alarm system. The walls of our hundred-year-old villa are very thick so the temperature is pleasant in the rooms, however they are all equipped with fans and the bedrooms on the second floor also have air-conditioning because they are close to the roof, therefore slightly hotter.
The entrance to the villa is on the ground floor, where there is also a living and dining room (with an exit on one side), with a fireplace and a modern satellite television with foreign channels and a DVD player. On the ground floor there is also a kitchen with a fireplace which can also be used as a barbecue. The kitchen is fully equipped with all crockery, cutlery, pots, pans, and electrical appliances. There is a fridge, a freezer, a dishwasher, a gas stove, an electric oven, a microwave oven, an electric kettle, a toaster, a filter coffee machine, a traditional Italian “Moka” coffee machine (to use on the gas stove), as well as an electric Italian Lavazza espresso coffee machine (the latter can be requested for a small fee). From the kitchen you can come out into the adjacent veranda with table, chairs and outdoor barbecue.
On the ground floor there is also a bathroom with a wc, a bidet and a shower with cubicle. You’ll also find a utility room with a sink, a washing machine and a drying machine.
If you take the stairs you will come to the first floor. Here you’ll find:
- the Venus Suite: a very elegant double bedroom with a canopy bed and a large wardrobe
- an elegant bathroom with Jacuzzi next to the suite
- the Bacchus Room with a double bed and wardrobe
- the Juno Room with twin beds and wardrobe
- an elegant blue bathroom
On the second floor you'll find:
- the Concordia Room with twin beds
- the very large and lovely Diana Room, with a double bed and baby cot if needed
- the elegant Loft Room
- a shower room with cubicle
- a study with internet connection (wireless or with wire)
The villa has been furnished very elegantly and accurately, and with great attention to every detail. There are terracotta tiled floors, beamed ceilings, walls painted in pastel colours, and frescos in several parts of the house, as well as mosquito nets at all windows.
There is a car park for several cars within the property just behind the villa.
Next to the swimming pool, there is a wood oven for cooking pizza and an half bathroom (sink plus toilet).
Villa Colombai is the perfect location to visit the main attractions of Tuscany, but at the same time guests can relax spending time around the luxury pool with whirlpool, in the very large garden, or in the beautiful veranda next to the barbecue and the kitchen. Small children can play in the playground especially made for them, and bigger children can play table tennis or soccer in the field that is also part of the property.
Within easy reach of the Villa there are grocery stores, cafes, a butcher and a traditional baker. There is also a well-known pastry shop still following an old tradition of pastry making.
In Orentano you will also find the Trattoria-Pizzeria da Benito, one of the most famous restaurants of the area. Their absolute specialty is the typical very thick grilled Tuscan steak, absolutely delicious at an affordable price, but they also serve traditional starters, pasta dishes and pizza. Remember to reserve a table in advance because the restaurant is always fully booked.
Within 15km distance there are also a golf course, thermal resorts, tennis courts and many other activities.
Guided wine-tasting tours can be arranged for you, as well as any other activity you might be interested in. We can arrange visits to artisan ceramic or copper pot workshops, we can reserve concert or theatre tickets for you, etc… according to your interests.
We can also organize your wedding, anniversary, birthday party or other events and take care of all the details.
Here at Villa Colombai you can enjoy the wine and the olive oil produced not far from the villa or the typical food of our area – we can arrange to have groceries delivered to your door by the local shop keeper on his bicycle.
Orentano is well known for the “Sagra della pizza” – a pizza and beer festival where you can experience the hustle and bustle of Tuscan life and at the same time eat pizza or grilled meat and listen to music. The traditional local “Sagra” takes place throughout June and July.
The ancient pastry tradition of the village is celebrated every year with a local event called the “Cream puff Festival” (“Sagra del Bignè”) , on the third Sunday of August.
There are other “sagras” (festivals) of all kinds in neighboring towns and villages. There are also historical festivals like, for example, the Medieval Festival in Monte Castello, Lucca, Nozzano, Buti, and many other places which take place from May to September, but especially during the summer months of June, July and August.
Only 5 km from Orentano you can find the small town of Altopascio with all kinds of shops and a market on Thursdays. You can also find supermarkets and other stores (furniture, clothes, shoes, etc..).
From Altopascio you can catch a train or take the highway to go and visit Florence, Prato, Pistoia, Lucca, Montecatini, Viareggio, Pisa, and many other places. The famous historic and art cities of Florence, Pisa, Lucca, etc.. or the sea are within easy reach. The surroundings offer a lot for sport freaks and wellness lovers: tennis (4 km), golf course (15km), horse riding (5km), thermal resorts (15km) and fitness centres (7km).
My name is Stefano and I'm managing this lovely house with my wife Cinzia (next to me in the picture) since the year 2008. We have four children and we love the region (Tuscany) where we live. My family live in Orentano since the year 1590. We love to welcome people at our Villa from all over the world. We both gradueted at the university in Pisa, me in economics while my wife in medical care. We live in Orentano in a house 1 km far from the Villa. I love food and wine for this reason I orginize wine tasting and food tasting.
Mr. Stefano Barghini, Dear Tuscany Srl. purchased this villa in 2004
This property is a Villa built at the end of 1800s. This property on the 1920s was donate to a school istitute and It was used as elementary school of the town of Orentano for 30 years (from 1928 until 1958). Then it came back on the original use as a private Villa until we decide to purchased on 2004 and after a restoration we start to rent it on 2008.
The Villa is entirely made by exclusive building materials and by great artisans. For example the pool is entirely made by travertino stone, this particolar stone will allow you to enjoy the pool wather in a natural color like in a thermal bath. In addition on the year 2012 we made an important investment in solar energy to reduce the Co2 impact of your staying in our Villa and in Tuscany. Sustainibility is important for us!
This is an amazing villa set in interesting and beautiful grounds. It has everything one needs to relax and enjoy the fantastic local area, particularly Lucca. The village of Orentano (only a 10 minute walk away) is charming and has a number of shops and restaurants for immediate needs. There is also a lager supermarket just a short drive away.Stefano is an excellent host, with knowledgeable local information at his finger tips. His recommendations were always tremendously useful. We stayed as a family of 6 adults and a small baby and found that the villa had everything we needed and more! On the final evening we enjoyed a meal cooked at the villa by a local chef- a very good way to end a fantastic holiday. We all agreed we will not hesitate to re-book when the occasion arises.
The house was full of character and very spacious for ten of us. We spend most of our time by the pool which was perfect for our children whose ages range from 3 to 11. The nearby village has great restaurants and, shapes and cafes. We had a lovely relaxing week and would have loved to have stayed longer. Stefan was very friendly and helpful.
It was a verry beauty holliday. The pizza-evening was greet.
The beds in the 1. floor (not parentsroom with bad) is squeal verry much. The sleeping accommodation was troublesome.
But the rest was verry OK. We engjoyd the time in the Villa Colombai verry much.
Love regards Ingrid
It was the second time that wie have made holidays in this beautiful Villa. That Land is Frances all around, so our dog could always move Frevels and there was no other dog get on the land.
It was so nice from Stefano (the owner) that he fanced the pool. It was also safe for our little son.
Inside of the Villa ist history and it doesn`t matter how hot it is outside, the thick walls keep the heat away. But if you need aircondition there is a realy powerful one in the villa.
But there are more reasons why we came back to Villa Colombai. For us, the most important reason is the owner Stefano! He is very frendly, helpful and offers many individual opportunities (Pasta-Workshop, Private-Dinner, City tours and so on. Everytime we had a question we asked Stefano, he was always available and helped immediately.
It`s always quiet outside, so we could listen to the birds wilst we had our breakfast.
No we have to wait till 2017...we are looking forward having vacations there again.
Greetings to Stefano!
Frank and Family
This is a fantastic villa with everything we needed and more. For our first excursion aboard with a baby grandson in tow we could not have wished for better- facilities both inside and outside the villa are extensive and well maintained. The villa itself is beautiful. There is ample space for effectively at least 3 families whilst everyone still has space to 'do their own thing'. There are restaurants and shops within walking distance but not close enough to interfere with the tranquility of the location. Our stay was enhanced by the willingness of the owner to help us choose excursions and best places to visit- being available whilst not intruding into our holiday. He recommended a brilliant visit to a local vineyard for wine tasting, tour and 'light' Italian lunch and also a local village restaurant 'Da Benita' - an excellent evening meal and very accommodating of a young baby. We have stayed in numerous villas as a family in Italy, Spain and Portugal and we decided this was the best ever and would be happy to stay here again in the future. Thank you so much, Stefano, for making this a very memorable family holiday.
We (6 adults) had a wonderful 5-day stay at the Villa Colombai.
Perfectly equipped, great facilities , very tidy, delicious Restaurants quite close and not to forget the best-in-class Information and Organization "Center" Stephano!
We will definitely recommend this property !
I think everything about the property that can be said has been, we have only to say that we would highly recommend this to anyone looking for a terrific place to stay while in Tuscany. Our group of 12 ranged in age from 2 to almost 70. Stefano and Anna were absolutely fantastic and went well beyond what we would have expected to make this a trip we will never forget. We could not have had the experience we did with out their help.
In our 2 weeks we went to Rome, Venice, Florence, Pisa, Cinque Terra, Lucca, San Gimignano and more. We also took the pizza workshop with Stefano and Pizza Chef Guido Buoncristiani and enjoyed a beautiful meal at the villa with Chef Fabrizio. We took in the community Pizza Festival in Orentano and had a wonderful night of food, wine and dancing. Hard to say what we enjoyed the most since it was all terrific. We are looking forward to trying what we learned at the pizza class back in Canada. Not sure it will taste as good.
Stefano also set up and joined us at 2 wine tours, one at Capezzana with all of us and one with our son and daughter in law at Chianti Classico. They were both fantastic trips and Stefano's knowledge of the area and the wines was extremely helpful. Highly recommend this if you have time.
Surprising to us was how great the meals were that we had right in Orentano. We had a great dinner at da Benito Pizzeria and several terrific meals at De Vito Pizza at both places english only was not an issue and the prices were great. We also started most days with a walk to Panatton for a morning pastry and espresso or cappacino. They are all with in walking distance from the villa. We can honestly say we never had a bad or even average meal the entire time we were away.
We have been back for a few weeks now and miss it very much already. You will not meet nicer people and we are recommending this property to all of our friends and family.
Thanks Stefano and Anna for a terrific experience. I hope we make it back.
