About Jim Tennant
I have worked in Canada's Northwest Territories for 40 years and have volunteered one month per year at St Jude Hospital near Vieux Fort, St Lucia for more than 30 years.
Jim Tennant purchased this Villa in 2012
Why Jim Tennant chose Laborie
In 2013 we decided to buy the house in Laborie, our favorite village on the island. Laborie is not a tourist village but has local stores and restaurants. We will be spending at least 3 months of the year enjoying the climate and the people on this beautiful island in the Caribbean.
What makes this Villa unique
We love the garden and the panoramic views of the Caribbean. Saint Vincent is directly south and usually visible unless the weather gets hazy. There is always a breeze which keeps the temperature comfortable. The house is open and airy with large sliding glass doors onto the large patio. We have a plunge pool on the lower patio Just across the road there is a path down to a beach, water is warm and we swim there. There is lots to do within a short and scenic drive including wind and kite surfing, snorkeling/ diving, zip lining.

St Jude Medical Student
My husband, our 2 month old, and I stayed here for a month while I was on a rotation at St. Jude’s hospital for medical school. Jim was great to work with, and the information document about the property and area was incredibly helpful! George Lee was fantastic; he helped us with anything we needed, including an overview of the area, how I could get to and from the hospital, and helping us rent a car for site seeing. The house was beautiful, and was just a short 10 minute walk to Laborie, which had one of the most beautiful beaches we visited. I used the public buses everyday, and it was a quick 5-10 minute walk to a pickup spot, and about 15 minutes walk home from the drop off in Laborie in the afternoon. I also had to change buses in Vieux Fort, and it was incredibly easy to do so; I also walked right by the grocery store when changing buses, so I could stop in and get what we needed on my way home very conveniently. After the first few days, it was really quite easy to use the buses! Everyone I met along the way was very nice and many people helped me make sure I got to where I needed to be and answered my questions if I had uncertainties. My husband and I enjoyed our stay, and would highly recommend this property. Jim even had a crib and high chair at the house for our son. We loved spending afternoons out on the patio or in the pool, taking in the beautiful ocean view. The dogs on the property were wonderful companions, and were well-behaved. As a working student and vacationer, all of my needs were met while staying at Sapphire House. We would recommend staying here, whether in Saint Lucia for vacation or work. Sapphire House is in a great location - close to town, with the beach and many wonderful restaurants (if you’re there, you must go to Mama Tilly’s for dinner!!), but also very easy to get from the house to many other locations on the island for site seeing as it sits just up from the main road on the island. I cannot say enough good things about my family’s experience at Sapphire House, and all the wonderful people who help make the property what it is!
Spectacular view from the terrace
We spent a fortnight at Sapphire House and enjoyed every minute of it! The view from the terrace is to die for. We spent hours every morning and every evening just sitting there, watching the Caribbean, listening to the sound of the waves. (Don't forget insect repellent if you plan to sit outdoors in the evening!) The house is well equipped with everything you need, there's a brand-new fridge with a large freezer compartment and an American washing machine (washing line in a little courtyard just outside the kitchen). The air-con in the bedrooms is convenient for going to sleep but we never kept it on during the whole night. Downstairs, the sea-breeze does an excellent job cooling the place down.
George Lee picked us up from the airport and organised a hire-car to be brought to the house on Day 2. He also took care of getting the cleaning lady to come round half-way through our stay. He was very helpful and communication with him by email was excellent and quick!
We bought fish at the fish-market in Vieux Fort (at the end of Clarke Street, drive in through the gate, lots of space to park, walk down to the pier and buy directly from the boats) twice and cooked it on the BBQ on the patio. We liked the fresh veg bought at the road-side or in the village better than the tomatoes and cucumber from the supermarket.
Google the dog is a friendly and boisterous young lad who does a good job guarding the property. He needed to be shown his place in the hierarchy once and everything was well.
WiFi and telly worked well throughout our stay. There was a problem with the local phone but all the people we needed to talk to had Whatsapp on their mobiles so we just used the call function on there.
The information folder at the house about the area is very thorough. Try and eat at the local restaurants in the village recommended by Jim, it's definitely worth it!
All in all we had a wonderful time at Sapphire House and wouldn't hesitate to go back!
Grand old home on the beachfront plus private pool
Three couples rented fora two week get away. We came for the quiet and the elegant home and pool. We enjoyed the beach just across the road also. The house manager George is a treasure. He helped in many ways from tour guide to shopping assist and transportation he always found us transportation and what we needed. George, Thomas and Kim were very pleasant and helpful. The only downside was that the house could use some tender loving care of a housekeeper. Google was very friendly and behaved well. I read other reviews complaining of dogs barking. It didn’t bother me. This was a good vacation experience.
We recently stayed at the Sapphire House and loved every minute of our time in Laborie! Jim was very responsive when booking the home and George Lee is an outstanding property manager. He prepared several meals for us that were simply wonderful including some of the local foods that we otherwise probably wouldn't have tried. The home itself is lovely ... great location and beautiful views. Laborie is a quaint fishing village that isn't yet overrun with tourists. The locals are very friendly and we felt very safe while we were there. I would highly recommend the Sapphire House to anyone considering a trip to Laborie and hope to return sometime in the future!
Thanks Jodi for the fabulous review! You and family are most welcome to return anytime!,
Beautiful views, close to almost everything
Our vacation was the vacation that almost wasn't... but thanks to a stroke of luck we found a plane and landed in Vieux Fort where our rental car was waiting for us and George Lee. George Lee showed us to the house where a cooked dinner was waiting. It was a wonderful welcome.
The house has amazing views and is a quick walk to multiple beaches. It is also a quick drive to a few as well. Soufriere is about 30-minutes to drive and where you will find a lot of great restaurants, the Pitons, the volcano mud baths and more.
We took Jim's idea of dinner reservations at Balenbouche. Highly recommend!
We also went over and visited Choiseul Art Gallery. Open 10-4 Tues through Saturday. Also highly recommend. Leo and Hatti are a pleasure and the art of theirs and other Choiseul residents was spectacular.
The plunge pool is maintained every day as well as the gardens. Fresh fruit was waiting for us as well as the house dog, Google. Google is an adorable puppy. Our girls trained him to give his paw. He was fun to have around.
The only draw back is the island has a stray dog population and at night there were two spots right across the street that they house themselves at and they are loud. No exaggeration. Probably about 30 in the packs. Google would get riled up for a minute or two but then would go back to sleep, but not the pack dogs. Probably would have been a bit quieter if we had closed the doors and ran the AC but we enjoy the breeze and hearing the waves crash. Our daughters after the first night did close the windows and they said it was fine.
Bugs were not that bad, but you do want spray and the nets at night.
Jim is very responsive and his book of information is more than plentiful!
You will enjoy yourself if you book this house. Our family of five definitely did.
Best trip ever
Sapphire House is located just West of Laborie, a local West Indian Fishing village. Although not a tourist location, many holiday activities are within a short drive including wind surfing, kite surfing, snorkeling/diving, catamaran day cruises, hiking and beaches.
Local quality dining nearby.
