About Kathleen Barth

I have been visiting Ojai since childhood, and have lived here sporadically since 1988. My husband and I met at UC Santa Barbara, were married in Ojai, and lived here as newlyweds. We currently live in Riverside, CA, but frequent the valley for relaxation and rejuvenation.

Kathleen Barth purchased this cottage in 1974

Why Kathleen Barth chose Ojai

My parents purchased this property as a family retreat and potential retirement spot. My husband and I now own it and love sharing with visitors!

What makes this cottage unique

We love the rural feel of this area, and also enjoy its proximity to civilization. The hiking and biking are amazing, and the village of Ojai has fun activities year-round: festivals and events, great shopping, and open space. We have easy access to both Lake Casitas and the ocean, as well as a number of attractions along the coast. Most of all, we enjoy the quiet of hanging out here in the East End.

A Perfect Cozy Cabin

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I loved our stay. It's a cute little cabin. Clean, with a well-stocked kitchen (although we didn't do any major cooking). Comfortable bed. Nice living room to sit and read (good lighting) or watch a movie (tip: fold the sofa into a bed). The patio area is private and shady. The whole area is very quiet. I don't recall one car driving past. It's close to a wonderful hike (Something Canyon--notes in the cabin guide). We managed to walk into town once, but it's a long walk (and I had to carry my dog the last half). In short, a perfect place for anyone looking for some quiet rest and relaxation, not far (but not too close) to the Ojai action.

Quiet, comfortable cottage for a weekend getaway

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I spend three restful nights in the cottage in mid-May. The weather was gorgeous and the mountains were bright green with regrowth following last winter's fires. The cottage was well appointed, clean, cute, and comfortable. It was absolutely peaceful and quiet throughout our stay. The cottage was perfectly sized for a couple, with a well equipped kitchen, a living area, and a bedroom.

During our stay we enjoyed a trip to the beach, a bike ride on the path, and a hike from the nearby trailhead (it was marked as closed, but the locals assured us there was no problem using the trail). So much to do in the area, or you can just hang out on the patio and relax. We had some great dinners and wine tasting in Ojai proper and enjoyed the local strawberries and the last of the oranges. A great, relaxing vacation getaway!

Filthy, Late Check-in from unreachable host, termites, and uncleaned bathroom, used towels & sheets

  • 1 of 5

WORST vacation rental experience! This place was a nightmare! First, the host was unreachable for several hours at check-in time. She was supposed to contact us with instructions to enter and did NOT and then claimed she left a voicemail which we NEVER received and then did not answer her phone when we took it upon ourselved to contact her (many times without an answer) until an hour and half into check-in time which left us outside the house but unable to enter..almost spoiling our dinner reservation! Once we did get ahold of her, we walked into an unpleasant odor in the house, a bathroom that had dirty, used towels hanging, hair on the toilet seat and around the unflushed toilet (so bad that we took photos), dishes in the cabinets that had not been washed (so shocking that we took photos of that, too), and a dirty microwave that had a dirty plate with bugs in it. Termites and termite shells covered the place, as well. We spent a good amount of time cleaning the place just so we could feel comfortable for the night. Due to the late check-in, it was too late to try to find another place to stay. Because the towels were used and smelled, we didn't feel comfortable using the shower. When we went to go sleep at night, there were termite mud tubes on the wall by the bed with termites moving around inside. It took us so long to research what in the world those were and whether or not they would harm us, etc. that we got very little sleep (yes, we took pictures of them as well). Then, once it was time to get in bed, I lifted the soiled comforter to find slept-in sheets (yes, I took pictures). The sheets were soiled, had body hair in them, and were obviously used. At that point, I set down pillowcases and slept on top of the dirty bed and tried to get some much-needed rest all while trying to ignore the termites hard at work to the side of my face. To call this experience unpleasant would be generous. It was a nightmare and makes me question renting vacation homes versus just staying in a hotel in the future. It was a terrible rental experience as I would have been better off sleeping in my car (which I contemplated, exhausted at 1:00 a.m.) We got out of there as fast as we could in the morning! And because we had cleaned the place just to make it decent, we left it nicer than we found it (we took videos and pictures of everything)! Not sure why or how we got charged a cleaning fee when we were the ones who had to do the cleaning. Extremely disappointed

Owner's Response: You can see from the vast majority of my reviews that your situation is not the norm, but that does not mean you should have had to put up with what you found. There was no sign of subterranean termites (that’s what they were) the day before your arrival, and they were treated and removed immediately after your stay. Honestly, it sounds like a miscommunication with the cleaner, and that the cottage was not actually cleaned for your stay. I know that my manager tried to contact you several times and finally was successful about ten minutes after your arrival. I have issued a full refund for your night’s stay, including cleaning. If you ever have issues like this someplace else, I would like to recommend that you contact the owner/manger right away and give them the opportunity to fix the situation when it can do you some good.

Not what I was expecting, plumbing issues rendered shower fairly useless

  • 2 of 5

I was expecting to get some rest and relaxation and some tranquility in the foothills of Ohio. When I arrive to the property everything seemed OK it was late at night although I heard some nearby noise. The next morning I woke up to even louder sounds of drilling, as there is a well being drilled nearby (within a half mile) I believe? Then there was a plumbing issue with the shower not draining properly and the toilet not flushing as well. I let the property manager know early the morning after my prior late night areival if it could be addressed that day please if not I would like for it to be fixed after I leave as the next day was only time to relax.

Also the cottage was not that clean (3/5 IMO) upon my arrival. There were pieces of bacon in the microwave still, the toilet itself underneath was still dirty, other dogs hair in the unit, and all the blankets smelled of other dogs...etc.

The owner and manager tried to get the problem with the plumbing fixed the day of my complaint but it was not addressed until after I left per my request to be left alone the 3rd and last day of my trip. I know the cottage is far away and rustic, but there is no laundry on site in a very small trash container in the kitchen. From my experience as a property manager myself there needs to be a bigger trash receptacle onsite in order for people not to use the toilet as a trash possibly? therefore causing plumbing issues.

All in all I was able to hear a couple birds chirp for a couple hours, just not what I was expecting in the long run. Luckily I was there alone with my dog, if my girlfriend was there we would’ve had to check out and get a hotel room due to the plumbing issue(s) and well drilling.I noticed in a prior review somebody mentioning the low-water pressure as well which definitely was an issue for me. With a couple of updates to the plumbing and “softer flooring” this cottage would get a couple more stars in my review. My next trip to the area I would look for something with better plumbing and a washer/dryer on site to allow for cleanliness to my standards.

The Owner and property manager both tried to get the plumbing issue fixed and I did ask not to be interrupted that last day. They did appreciate my patience with the plumbing, that was all I got from them. I just don’t want the next renter to run into any issues.

Owner's Response: I am truly sorry the cottage was not up to its usual standards for your stay. It was unfortunate that we had so much trouble finding a plumber to come out on the day it would have worked for you, and I am glad it was not such an issue that you needed to have your one quiet day interrupted. The issue has been resolved. The cottage was given a through, deep cleaning after your stay as well.
