Why Margie Herman chose North Beach

The flat is located in the very heart of San Francisco's Italian neighborhood and has EVERYTHING within steps. This is spacious apartment with large rooms including dining room and extra large bathroom with claw foot tub. Beautiful Oriental carpets and Art Deco furnishings -- a place you would want to revisit year after year!

Secluded, quiet, light and beautiful yet within walking distance of San Francisco's best restaurants, cafes, shops, and attractions. A few blocks from the must see San Francisco institution, Beach Blanket Babylon, as well as Union Square, Chinatown, Fisherman's Wharf, the Embarcadero and Financial District.

Guestbook comments from the manager

Loved this apartment. Close to everything, yet quiet and peaceful. Flat street. Nice size living room with sofabed, great separate dining room and really nice bedroom. Really nice size for a one bedroom! Within one block are great restaurants, shopping, and the heart of North Beach! I'm coming back!

Cozy, quiet flat, perfect location

  • 5 of 5

We are used to staying in this neighborhood but it was a first staying at this particular property. It was only a block from where we used to stay minus steep inclines and street noise. This property was so convenient. Just steps away from grocery, shops and nightlife, near to Chinatown, the wharf and North Beach fun. We did not need a car. Called Lyft once but walked everywhere else. The flat has everything you need. We did not do much cooking but kitchen is fully loaded with pots, pans, dishes, etc. Margie was the kind of host I like who is available if needed but pretty hands off otherwise. Easy check in and check out. Clean place and quiet with no street noise. We will stay here again. It was a great place to hang out on rainy days. Very comfortable and homey.

Perfect "home base" in North Beach

  • 5 of 5

My husband, best friend and I had been planning this vacation to San Francisco for over a year. I used HomeAway/VRBO for the first time for this trip and it could NOT have been more perfect! Owner Margie was SO easy to work with and this apartment was even better than the description. Located just down the street from Coit Tower in beautiful North Beach- just a 15 minute walk to Pier 39 and Fisherman's Wharf- this immaculate, homey, quiet, comfy apartment on a very quiet side street was just what we wanted! We walked almost everywhere- to new spots for breakfast and dinner each night, to the wharf, just to sight-see. We felt safe and right at home. Margie had left a nice bottle of wine for us(well- for me!) and all linens and towels were included. Full kitchen, roomy enough for the 3 of us(my friend slept on one of the comfy couches and we took the bedroom) the bathroom had an old-fashioned claw-foot tub(with shower) Loaded with antiques and a huge stained glass light in the diningroom- it was just so lovely.

If you go(and you must go!! what a GREAT area of the city!!) be sure and check out Cafe Roma for coffee and breakfast, Original Joe's for cocktails and dinner, Acqualina for lunch al fresco and also the North Beach Restaurant for dinner. We took the ferry to Alcatraz, the ferry to Sausalito and the 2 hour double-decker bus tour of the city- don't miss ANY of these! Also breakfast at the Wipeout restaurant on Pier 39 was very good- sourdough french toast was amazing, and our BEST dinner was at Scoma's on the wharf- fine dining and such fabulous seafood!!

We loved everything about our vacation and thank Margie for making us feel at home!!

Great location gave us a new perspective on SF

  • 5 of 5

When in San Francisco, we typically stay in a hotel near Union Square, where the proximity to BART, the cable cars, and the streetcar makes it easy to visit many parts of the city. On previous visits, we'd often walk through Chinatown to North Beach, and we have always enjoyed the charm of "Little Italy", so this time around, we decided to make it our home base.

I don't have much to add to the other reviews about this unit -- "check-in" and "check-out" were both a breeze, location is great, and the unit's location (off the street, up a little alley) ensured insulation from street noise. The romantic in me might have wanted a balcony overlooking the street or the park, but I quickly appreciated the quiet that came from being 25 steps away from all the bustle. Liguria's legendary focaccia is literally on the same block; Mama's is just across the street from Liguria. The park, Molinari Deli, and countless other cafes and restaurants are moments away. Coit Tower is just up the street (a very short, but steep, climb). Trader Joe's and Safeway are a 5-minute walk (near Fisherman's Wharf). There's a great homemade pasta shop/restaurant on Columbus, a big playground and indoor pool run by the city....you're right in the heart of things. As is typical with apartments of this vintage, the unit is long and skinny, with the living room at the front of the unit and the bathroom at the very back, so it would be awkward for two couples -- those staying on the hide-a-bed would be strolling through the bedroom to get to the bath. Worked out great for our family of four (with 2 small kids).

We drove down to SF, so we had our car with us, but SF is not a car-friendly town. :) We parked the car in a garage for the duration of the trip (about $25 a day) and then walked, used the streetcar (from Fisherman's Wharf) or used Uber.

This was our first time using this rental, but it won't be our last. I'm almost reluctant to write this recommendation for fear that it will make the apartment harder to rent the next time we're in town. :)

Great location, quiet, comfortable

  • 5 of 5

We spent 6 days for both business and vacation and were very happy with Margie's place. She was very responsive and couldn't have been easier to deal with. The first 2 days I used for business and walked down to the Financial District, it was a welcome break from the usual hotel rooms. Then my family - wife and 2 young kids - joined me for vacation. The accommodations worked well for the four of us and we took advantage of the kitchen and dining room, mainly for breakfast before heading out for sightseeing. Location is fantastic, North Beach is very charming, lots of restaurants, walking distance to so many places, just a short (but steep) block walk up to Coit. We used Uber a couple times to visit the GG park and to SFO but otherwise didn't need a car. We had a wonderful stay

Clean, comfortable and quiet

  • 5 of 5

This is an excellent place to stay in San Francisco. My husband and I visited for 5 nights with our teenage daughter. She slept on the hide-a-bed sofa and was very comfortable. This one bedroom apartment is lovely and quiet at night. Everything you need to make meals is provided in the kitchen and Margie left us a gift basket with wine. Wifi excellent. Blooming cherry trees outside the window to greet us! North Beach is a great neighborhood. You can walk to Fisherman's Wharf, Chinatown, Coit Tower and even to Union Square if you're energetic. We loved Sodini's Green Valley for Italian food, just around the corner, and Victoria's Pastry on Filbert St. for breakfast. The cab driver did not know "Medau Place" (a small alley) so just tell them near the corner of Filbert and Grant. Thanks Margie, we will definitely recommend this apartment to friends and family.

My friend and I really enjoyed our 3 night stay in this convenient & comfortable apartment. Generally very quiet, good sushi nearby, and an enjoyable walk up over the hill & down to the ferry building. We really liked the decor & all the personal touches.
