Set in 3 acres, very quiet & peaceful near Lake Dathee and golf

Superbly furnished and modernised, situated in the prettiest Calvados region and near the spectacular Vire Gorges. Lake Dathee features boating and fishing. Superb 18 hole Golf course overlooking the lake. Market town, Vire (5km), offers shopping, dining and all facilities inc. internet cafe. Easy driving to Granville and sandy beaches, Le Mont St. Michel, Bayeux and the Normandy landing beaches.

Fully fitted new (2010) dining kitchen with dishwasher, full oven and hob, microwave, fridge/freezer, washing machine, more crockery & utensils than you need.

Satellite English Freeview TV/DVD/Video/CD Stereo, Log burner in lounge, Central heating and double glazing, garden furniture and BBQ. Not overlooked and set in 3 acres with ample parking. Near bakery/bar (1-2km).

How to get there: 1. Ferries are the most popular way of getting there. There is a choice of Le Havre, Ouistreham (Caen), Cherbourg or St-Malo, all of which have regular crossings from the UK and leave about 1 to 11/2 hours drive. Crossings to Boulogne or Calais by ferry or Channel Tunnel would leave a 4-5 hour drive on quiet motorways or scenic drives through quiet countryside.

2. We can offer a discount of 20% off Britatany Ferries for confirmed accommodation bookings. 3. There is a direct train line from Vire to Paris which takes about 2 hours.

Things to do in the area: There should be lots of information at the cottages but the following are a few “must do’s” when in the area all within about 1 hour travelling and you may be able to research more online depending what you like doing:- 1. Bayeux tapestry and town. 2. The Normandy landing beaches are about 1 ¼ hours away with lots to see 3. Mont St. Michel and Granville on the coast to the West 4. Villedieu les Poeles (Gods town of frying pans!!) 40 mins west on Tuesdays(check) and is renowned for copper and brass and bell foundries. 5. Swiss Normandy is an area of Normandy including the Orne and Calvados districts, south of the River Seine. Its name comes from the River Orne that flows across the area, making deep gorges/cliffs and creating spectacular rocky landscapes. The main towns in Suisse Normandy are Thury-Harcourt, Clecy and Pont d'Ouilly. Nearby, Falaise, birthplace of William the Conqueror. 6. Vire market is Friday. There is a tourist information centre, internet cafe & free parking.

More things to do in the area: 7. Vire market again from memory is Friday and there is a tourist information centre and internet café near the main car park (free!!!) just off the centre. 8. Also nearby is a railway track converted to a footpath/bridleway if you fancy a day walking 9. Further south on the west coast are the submarine pens from WWii at St Nazaire 10. If you like walking try the Vire Gorges, or the St. Sever forest which is very close. 11. Nearby is Lake Dathee and is a nice gentle circular walk around the lake with picnic areas. Above the lake is a great 18 hole golf course and the views are brilliant. 12. The bar in St. Manvieu Bocage near La Clartiere also has a few provisions and bread and is “very local” –worth a visit for the experience and the “plat du jour”. Also a “fish & chip” van run by an English family visits on a Wednesday(check it is running) and you can eat them in the bar which is normally packed so get there early from 6pm.

After 10 years together we eventually married on New Years Eve 2003. As we had sold our schools equipment mail order business we travelled the world on many different types of holiday. Eventually, in 2007, we arrived in the Calvados Region of Normandy near a delightful market town of Vire. We were so struck by the area that we spent a day of the holiday with real estate agents! and stayed in LaClartiere a 300 year old, stone, thatched cottage. We liked it so much we bought it!! Why Eileen Plummer chose Saint-Manvieu-Bocage

On our first visit to the area we were struck by the quiet, unhurried and calm atmosphere and were overwhemed by the friendly welcome we got from the French. This area was badly affected in World War 2 and there is still a deep affection for the Allied forces for the liberation and the sacrifices they made. The region boasts a wealth of fine restaurants, mostly family run, where the food is prepared from first principles at very reasonable prices. If you want to leave behind the stresses of modern day living for a quiet and peaceful location then this is the place for you. Within 5 miles the market town of Vire offers all facilities with every shop you could possibly need and a bustling market each week. For more local involvement the village of St Manvieu Bocage is only 2 miles from the cottage and there you can get fresh bread or have a drink at the local bar. This is why we chose the property!

What makes this cottage unique

The location is ideally placed(10 minutes) near a lake(fishing)and a superb 18 hole golf course. The countryside is ideal for walking. The Housekeeper lives nearby and is English so language is not a problem and she is happy to answer any queries you may have.

We had the most wonderful and restful holiday at your beautiful home and it was by far the most fantastic house we have ever stayed in, in all our years travelling to France. We found the house to be a home rather than a house and we really appreciated all the lovely touches such as the very welcome food and wine on arrival and the dvds, books and games went down a treat. Our children thought they were in heaven! Brendan and Geoffrey were so welcoming and kind to us. The property is set in 3 acres down a 50m drive and is not overlooked with open views to countryside. The patio/terrace is south facing with patio table, sun shade and patio chairs/loungers. For the comfort of future guests the cottages are non-smoking and regretfully pets are not accepted. Failure to comply with this will render extra cleaning charges to be applied

Perfect stay

My friend and I had planned a 2 centre holiday with the 1st week on the island of Jersey and the 2nd in Normandy. The cottage is ideally located about half way between the ports of St Malo (ideal for Jersey) and Caen (return to Portsmouth) both of which have high speed ferry links. The cottage is in a lovely location with own private grounds and parking and the accomodation is of a very high standard. On arrival the wine and fresh bread waiting on the kitchen table and cheese, butter and milk in the fridge was a lovely surprise.

The accomodation has everything you could wish for for a relaxed stay and the nearby town of Vire has all the essential shops and market stalls (twice weekly) for self caterers.

For those wanting to visit the historic sights of Normandy there are plenty within an hour's drive including the D-Day landing beaches. The countryside is gently rolling with hidden gems literally around every corner. Lake Dathee and golf course are just a few minutes away and the cottage has 4 mountain bikes provided for those who wish to explore the area without taking the car.

A visit to a Cidre and Calvados farm should not be missed and the area known as Suisse-Normand to the East is also a must.

If you wish exploring a region by car was like it used to be in the Fifties, Normandy comes pretty close with excellent uncluttered roads and lovely picnic spots in beautiful countryside. A week is certainly not long enough to appreciate this area of France and we certainly plan to return to this lovely cottage soon.

La Clartiere was exactly how we expected it only better. We would strongly recommend it and if it had not been for the incessant rain we would have stayed for the full week and not left 2 days early
