About Donna H Paulson
Thank you for your interest in our private retreat in the mountains of North Carolina! After traveling the globe for 20 plus years for the tv biz...I have had the pleasure of seeing some of the world's best. But Cashiers is the spot that stopped me in my tracks. It's the perfect place to reflect, regain your senses and relax. The Mountain House and its little sister, the Hobbit House (655938) are for those who appreciate the outdoors, a beautiful setting and family time. Warning: you may never want to leave!
Donna H Paulson purchased this Lodge in 2012
Why Donna H Paulson chose Sapphire
Its secluded feel but convenient location....the Mountain House offers privacy and greenery, but is 5 minutes to great shopping and restaurants...the perfect balance. Beautiful four seasons a year, the area truly offers something for everyone, no matter what your interests.

Would give more than 5 stars if available
This property is all that is described. Great house with everything you could possibly need. Our family of 12 adults stayed comfortably here for our daughter's wedding. The communication with the owner is top notch - every detail is provided so there were no last minute glitches. We could concentrate on the wedding b/c everything with the house was taken care of Would definitely rent again.
Family weekend in the mountains
Our extended family of 10 (ages 9-76) had a wonderful stay at this property. The house was beautiful and felt like a truly stylish....but utterly relaxing....mountain retreat. It had everything we could want or ask for, including space to hang out or spread out as needed throughout the weekend. The location in the Sapphire resort area is perfectly oriented to anything you could want to do in the mtns including hiking, shopping/ dining in Cashiers or Highlands and we even rented a pontoon boat for the afternoon on nearby Lake Glenville. Donna, the owner, was very responsive to any questions we had leading up to and throughout our stay. She also provided very thorough instructions and spot on recommendations. This house and location sets the standard for the perfect mountain accommodations!
Everything and more. The pictures don’t do it justice. Beautifully decorated, beautiful location and everything you need.
Absolutely Fabulous in every way!!!
A True Home Away from Home
This is a listing where photos are accurate. The property is beautiful. It is set in resort area of dense forest with lots of native azaleas. The house is fully equipped from package tape and scissors to a backpack. It truly had all the items I use at home. Donna is a delight to communicate with and responds quickly and completely to all questions. We have stayed in a number of VRBO properties. This is by far our favorite. It was perfect for our 50th Anniversary celebration with our children, their spouses, abd our grandchildren.
So, so happy y’all had fun! And again, happy anniversary!! ❤️
Perfect Family Reunion
Our family reunion could not have been any better thanks to all the amenities offered by your beautiful house!
The living area was expansive and comfortable, with cozy throws
and ample pillows. The Kitchen was extremely well-equipped, and several of us enjoy cooking. There were sharp cutting knives, plenty of kitchen towels, very good quality pots and pans, and extra garbage and re-cycle bags. There was also a wine cooler and extra refrigerator in the basement.
The bedrooms were well-decorated and comfy. There was a huge closet for extra towels, blankets and throws.
The layout of the house was perfect for our family, with indoor dining, outdoor dining and an adorable screened porch with a swing couch.
Nights we all gathered around the fire pit, roasted marshmellows, and told stories. There were ping-pong matches, Monoply matches, heart games, gin games, Simon Says games, and very competitive Pickleball matches at the community center. There is also a great exercise room and indoor and outdoor pools.
One day the older children went whitewater rafting and my daughter-in-law took the 5 year old and three year old gem mining.
We all had so much fun they have all texted wanting to know if we can do it again next year!
Thanks for a perfect vacation!
You guys took advantage of the many things the Mountain House & Cashiers has to offer, and it sounds like an amazing family gathering! Can’t wait to see you again!🌲🌲🍷🍷
There is also a New Sport in the area called Foot Golf. You can challenge each other to this new sport that combines Soccer and Golf, and compete on the Redbird Par 3 golf course.just down the road! It is a Must Do activity while on your vacation here!
Lloads of things for the kids to do from summer camps to fishing to hiking to gem mining...and the same goes for adults(minus the summer camps!). In the evening, there are many upscale restaurants for foodies and the weather is perfect. Warm sunny days...cool crisp nights that call for a blanket!
Save some time to see some of the gorgeous waterfalls in this area...some are just a few minutes drive away. And while a few require a good hike, others are easily accessible by everyone.
The city of Ashville is a great day trip, just an hour or so away...incredible shopping and restaurants, lots of artists call Ashville home.
And if you've never seen the Biltmore mansion...this is a must visit. Allow a full day to see the place...it's that big, and that fascinating. Good places to eat lunch right there.
White water rafting, fly fishing, zip lining, horseback riding...it's all here!
