About Martha Specht Corsi
My name is Martha Specht Corsi and I am the daughter of George Specht and FlaminiaGoretti de Flamini, who restored and brought back to life the Castle of Porciano. Throughout the years my family also purchased and restored the cottages built on the upper part of the village, respecting their original look. The magic of this place and its beauty in all seasons have inspired me to share it with others interested in charming places off the beaten track. Come and enjoy the Real, Traditional Tuscan Hospitality!

Why Martha Specht Corsi chose Pratovecchio Stia
The Borgo del Castello di Porciano offers the peace and hospitality of the upper valley of the Arno River, Casentino. An excellent location for day trips to Florence, Arezzo, La Verna and beyond or spending time in a relaxing setting . The village stands at 600 meters above sea level, and is only one mile away (1.5 km) from the local town of Stia. Stia is a lovely small town built where the Arno and Staggia rivers meet. In the summer you will be able to enjoy the park along the river where you can sun yourself, wade or swim in the clear waters of the Arno river. The sources of the Arno are very near Stia so the water is still clean and pure. In the mountains around Stia and Porciano the National Park Reserve known as the Parco Nazionale delle Foreste Casentinesi offers a number of hiking trails and walks.

Casa Scaletta in the small village of Porciano
We stayed a week in Casa Scaletta on the grounds of a 1000 year old castle in the small village of Porciano. This area of Tuscany is off the beaten track and so it is very peaceful, beautiful, and authentic Italy in all respects. The views from our house were everything you could hope for. There were good restaurants in the small town of Stia just down the hill from the village of Porciano (where we were). Casa Scaletta was tastefully decorated and restored. The kitchen had all the basic tools we needed (coffee pot, coffee, washing machine, etc.). Everything was spotless upon arrival. Outside there is a picnic table that we used in the evening for drinks and dining. This casa was a perfect blend of privacy and social interaction. We definitely were able to recharge while at the same time we met some new friends there. The Casentino Valley is quiet and feels spiritual. The valley is bordered by two mountain ranges which separates it from the urban areas of Italy. The other towns and castles in the area near Stia are also beautiful and off the beaten track. - This place is perfect if you are ready to unplug and relax. The owner will help you with things to see and do in the area. We plan on returning!
Fairytale lodging in a pastoral Tuscan dreamscape
Not a day has passed since our stay Castello di Porciano when I haven't traveled back there in my mind to relive the tranquility and romance of that time. And I was there with 4 children so that I could find anything tranquil and romantic under those conditions says a lot.
The cottage was devastatingly charming, spacious and immaculately clean. Early risers, avid readers, catnappers and harried moms: you will especially enjoy the hideaway off the master bedroom with views of the Tuscan countryside and a door. The laundry was such a welcome amenity for our large family. The kitchen was well equipped and Fede had it stocked with thoughtful amenities to get us through until we could shop in town. And what a treat that was. Bakeries in hidden alleys, the most outrageously sweet fruit, meats and cheese to make you weep. The restaurants served some of our favorite meals of all time and the people are so kind and patient with even the most horrible Italian (mine).
Martha is welcoming and warm and provides fascinating historical perspective on the region, the town of Stia and the Castello. Fede is also very knowledgable about local history and is an excellent guide to the area. We wanted for simply nothing while we were there.
The grounds and the castle are the icing on this delicious cake. Flowers and trees burst with colors and catch every breeze. The views of the Tuscan countryside are every photo you've ever seen writ large. The castle tour is fascinating and transporting. And speaking of views, the one from the top of the castle will never, ever leave you. It will be your best souvenir.
Ottima vacanza a Porciano!
Single woman traveling independently
Castello di Porciano was the highlight of my trip -- an enchanting location in eastern Tuscany. Martha and Federica were perfect hosts, La Scaletta was charming and immaculately clean, and its location off the beaten path meant virtually no tourists. In all, it was a beautiful Italian experience.
Our Stay at the Castle in Porciano in September 2016
We enjoyed our week-long stay in Casa Scaletta at the Castle Porciano in Stia Tuscany. Having visited Florence previously, having a base in Stia allowed us to explore other smaller towns and sights in Tuscany, such as San Sepulcro, Arezzo, Poppi, Anghiari, and La Verna to name just a few, while still being within an hour of Florence. Fede and Martha (the owner of the castle) made us feel welcome with a guided tour of the castle itself and explanation of some of its history. Casa Scaletta is one of the cottages and easily can accommodate four although there were only two of us on this trip. Staying for a week allowed us to become more familiar with this part of Tuscany and not be treated as tourists in the big city (not having to pack and unpack another benefit)...we particularly enjoyed visiting new restaurants in the area and getting to know the locals and even visiting the grocery store (how to find those codes needed at the checkout when selecting fruit and vegetables, we don't have that in the US). Very picturesque castle and small town with all the amenities we could want. We spent our anniversary celebrating in a local restaurant in Stia and glad we did. Highly recommend a stay here.
Our family of two adults and two children (9 and 14) stayed at La Scalletta for just under two weeks in July. We enjoyed the area with places to hike (Monte Falterona and around), mountain-side monasteries (La Verna) and the easy-paced towns of the Casentino Valley. The apartment itself had a well-equipped kitchen that we used primarily for breakfasts and lunches (and the occasional dinner). The two bedrooms were comfortable and clean. There was a nice grassy area outside the apartment that allowed us to dine in the fresh air several times (with a view of the lit castle on clear nights). Fede was easy to contact and responded quickly to questions about the area and practicalities. A wonderful, tranquil and refreshing area to vist and a lovely apartment to stay in! We will be back =)
The Casentino is the first valley formed by the Arno river; a land of natural beauty, ancient country churches, castles and sanctuaries. Surrounded by the peace of the Casentino Forest National Park, you will explore a hidden and still undiscovered corner of the Tuscan countryside, away from the standard and usual tourist routes and destinations.
Many small hill towns, known for their beauty and history, are very close to each other like Poppi, Bibbiena, Anghiari and many others.
Florence and Arezzo are only just over one hour away. Siena and Cortona are lovely day trips from Porciano.
The Casentino is an area which maintains the appeal of a lesser-known Tuscany where the sense of tradition is still strong. The wish of its inhabitants of not loosing their bond with past history is felt everywhere.
