About Gary and Joanne Bartell

We'd like to introduce ourselves. We are Gary and Joanne Bartell. We moved to Homosassa in 1988 to raise our family and quickly got involved with local politics to help shape the future of our community. Gary served as a County Commissioner from 1990 to 2010 and was chairman of the Tourist Development Council for 14 years. Joanne was a founding board member of the Nature Coast Envirothon, a high school environmental education and scholarship program. We both enjoyed spending countless hours over the years educating the youth of the community about the rare and precious natural resources found in this area. Our vision has always been to protect and preserve these amazing natural resources for generations to come.

Gary and Joanne Bartell purchased this cottage in 2012

Why Gary and Joanne Bartell chose Florida Central Gulf Coast

The Riverlake Cottage property was originally owned by Dazzy Vance, the Hall of Fame major league baseball player (1915 - 1935) who once told a New York Times reporter that all he wanted to do in life is 'to play baseball and fish in Homosassa'. In 1995 we had the opportunity to purchase part of Vance's original land holdings but the Lakefront property was tied up in an estate until November 2012 when a for sale sign appeared on the front lawn - we bought it that same day. With only 10 private property owners along the entire Halls River, Riverlake Cottage is our opportunity to share a rare piece of Old Florida with you.

What makes this cottage unique

The Halls River is a rare piece of Old Florida. Largely undeveloped the river is a birder's paradise a fisherman's delight, and a photographer's dream. Blue Crab, Bass, Bream, Sunfish, Redfish, Snook, Ladyfish, Mullet, and various other species of fish can all be seen swimming about in the Halls River. In the sky above you will find Bald Eagles, Green Herons, White Pelicans, Wood Storks, White Ibis, Roseate Spoonbills and many more species of fabulous waterbirds. Along the river you may find dolphin chasing mullet or experience a manatee giving birth. Most days the morning sunrises and evening sunsets are aglow with brilliant colors that will take your breath away. For the adventurous, nightime kayaking or canoeing reveals brilliant stars and planets above - and - with a flashlight shone on the water the surface appears as a sheet of glass and you can see fish, turtles, and other creatures underwater as if you are watching them through a window. Amazing, breathtaking, and captivating moments and memories await you at Riverlake Cottage in Homosassa Florida.

A kayakers paradise! Perfect in every way!

  • 5 of 5

The listing for the cottage was very accurate. We loved the layout of the house. The living space was very large and the kitchen was both spacious and well equipped. One thing I did notice was that there was NEVER a shortage of hot water! Which makes it very nice when traveling with more adults. With only one bathroom there is always a fear of running out of hot water. No worries here!! The bedroom was a nice size and the bed was extremely comfortable! The home was very clean and well taken care of.

The central location of the cottage was great! We were never more than a 20-30 minute car ride from any of the locations we paddled. We were able to paddle the Halls River from the cottage the first night we arrived, it was breath taking! The following day we met my parents at the Chassahowitzka River where we met the resident manatee Rachel and her two babies! We explored the many springs with the caves and even found "The Crack"!

We were able to take a short ride North to Dunnellon to explore the Rainbow River which was completely stunning!

Locally we explored the Homosassa River, Monkey Island, Crystal River and Three Sisters springs area. The highlight of the trip for me was kayaking on the Weeki Wachee River.

We can not wait to come back with our kids!

Thank you so much Gary & Joanne for sharing your beautiful cottage with us!

Charming Homosassa Waterfront Cottage

  • 5 of 5

Thank you Gary and Joanne for letting us stay at your beautiful RiverLake Cottage and for your gracious hospitality. We had a wonderful time kayaking on the river and chill-axin' by the secluded backyard lake. It was very romantic when the trees in the woods magically glittered with little lights after dark. You made us and our baby doxie feel right at home. As others said the cottage was charming and clean on arrival with many personal touches. We couldn't have asked for better than this lovely vacation rental. Two days simply wasn't enough time. We already booked for a long weekend in August. Can't wait!

#1 Homosassa/Crystal River Location for Quiet Beauty & Nature at a Clean & Comfortable Cottage

  • 5 of 5

We loved everything about this stay.

The location is amazing. A peaceful fountain in the backyard lake, picnic table on a floating dock and the many fish and turtle had us in a trance when we arrived. Then we walked about 150 feet to the Halls River and all we can say is, WOW! Beautiful blue water with fish jumping as far as we could see. The first morning we had our coffee riverside and there was a pod of dolphin feeding on mullet right in front of us. We fished right off the docks in both the river and lake and caught so many fish. We had planned to go kayaking but instead stayed on land and enjoyed the beauty offered right there on this marvelous property. We had daily visits from a great blue heron, red-tail hawk and a family of river otter that entertained us for hours.

Other guests have commented on the many personal touches in the cottage and we so agree. These are thoughtful owners who obviously care about the quality of stay for their guests. Their phone number was discreetly placed in several places in the cottage in case we needed anything, like help with the TV remote. <3

We'd also like to comment how accommodating Joanne and Gary were with our hairless 'fur-baby' Celia. They are obviously pet lovers but their pet policy keeps in mind that not all people have animals and many, like us, have allergies to dog hair. You could not tell that any animal had ever been in the cottage! We hope we left it the same way we found it - PERFECT.

Thank you Joanne and Gary for sharing your slice of paradise with us. We will see you again next year!

Beautiful property. Cozy cottage. Great fishing. Wildlife galore. Love this location!

  • 5 of 5

This property was perfect! Spacious and private setting. Butterflies and birds everywhere. Fishing was great in the little lake that is right outside the door of the cottage. We spent an entire day on the river exploring and got to see dolphin, manatee, crabs, all kinds of fish and birds, and we even found a sunken boat! We had never heard of the Halls River, the river the cottage is located on, and it turned out to be one of the most vibrant and unspoiled rivers we've ever explored in Florida! On day two of our visit my husband went fishing in the Halls River while I went sightseeing and shopping in the Old Homosassa art district. Highly recommend you visit Watson's Art Gallery and the gift shop at Homosassa Riverside Resort if you are looking for reasonable priced quality gifts or souvenirs. Both places were real treats to visit. While I was busy shopping my hubby caught so many fish that he lost count. He released all except a nice redfish that we grilled for dinner. He served it with a sauce he made from sweet peppers and orange mango marmalade that he bought at the Greenhouse Farmers Market, right around the corner from the cottage. Highly recommend this outdoor market for fresh produce and some of the best jams we've ever had!

Everything about this location and cottage was absolutely perfect for us. Highly recommend for fellow nature lovers!

Great Getaway

  • 5 of 5

My friend and I stayed here for a girls weekend, exploring rainbow springs, and three sisters springs. The house in close proximity to lots of water activities. I highly reccomend hunter springs kayaks which is where we rented out stand up paddle boards and went to three sisters springs. It was magical!! This property has a small pond which is viewable form the front bedroom and the sound of the water lulled me right to sleep. The beds have a very thick egg crate top and the owners were very thoughtful in having LOTS of pillows to choose from and extra blankets for added comfort. Kids toys, horseshoes, games and books are all there. Lots of information about the surrounding area including places to eat and things to do are provided. We went to an amazing Thai restaurant called Thai Phoon that I HIGHLY reccomend! Also, check out the biscuit barn! The kitchen is fully stocked with cookware and utensils. Joanne and Gary are very thoughtful hosts and provide all that you can think of in the event that you forget something. The view of the river from the dock is amazing. We sat for a few hours and saw otters, dolphin, jumping fish and the neighbors pig. I highly reccomend this family friendly property.

Lesson Learned / Not recommended

  • 1 of 5

Friends of ours rented this cottage but were not able to go so we, after paying them went in their place. HUGE regrets because this gave Joanne the perfect opportunity to keep every penny of our Pet deposit! This was a shock to us since our pets did absolutely no damage! The Bartells were only required to do normal cleaning after our stay. In fact, we did general cleaning during and before we left the property. We truly could not believe someone could do this! She knew we had no recourse living 900 miles away! The few pros in the cottage was the location, pond and screened porch. On our arrival there was a musty odor which originated from the mold mildew under the kitchen sink. It was so bad that the counter tops had delaminated. There was a trash can left in the walkway which smelled even worse! We informed them that it was there but it remained there our entire two week stay! The windows were very dirty making it difficult to enjoy the view of the pond. She actually told us she inspected the furniture and the floors wth an ultra violet light. (Who does that!) There was a note in the fireplace stating they would supply the wood that they required to use for our first fire which was not there. A bundle of wood did show up the next day after it was too cold for a fire. If you will need sauce pans for cooking bring your own because theirs were full of rust. She actually claimed that the nonrefundable cleaning fee is for having the curtains done after each guest stay so they're not charging people for cleaning???
