About Gary and Joanne Bartell

We'd like to introduce ourselves. We are Gary and Joanne Bartell. We moved to Homosassa in 1988 to raise our family and quickly got involved with local politics to help shape the future of our community. Gary served as a County Commissioner from 1990 to 2010 and was chairman of the Tourist Development Council for 14 years. Joanne was a founding board member of the Nature Coast Envirothon, a high school environmental education and scholarship program. We both enjoyed spending countless hours over the years educating the youth of the community about the rare and precious natural resources found in this area. Our vision has always been to protect and preserve these amazing natural resources for generations to come.

Gary and Joanne Bartell purchased this cottage in 2012

Why Gary and Joanne Bartell chose Homosassa Springs

The Riverlake Cottage property was originally owned by Dazzy Vance, the Hall of Fame major league baseball player (1915 - 1935) who once told a New York Times reporter that all he wanted to do in life is 'to play baseball and fish in Homosassa'. In 1995 we had the opportunity to purchase part of Vance's original land holdings but the Lakefront property was tied up in an estate until November 2012 when a for sale sign appeared on the front lawn - we bought it that same day. With only 10 private property owners along the entire Halls River, Riverlake Cottage is our opportunity to share a rare piece of Old Florida with you.

What makes this cottage unique

The Halls River is a rare piece of Old Florida. Largely undeveloped, the river is a birder's paradise, a fisherman's delight, and a photographer's dream. Blue Crab, Turtles, Bass, Redfish, Snook, Trout, Ladyfish, Mullet, Bream, Sunfish, and various other species of fish can all be seen swimming about in the Halls River. In the sky above you will find Bald Eagles, Green Herons, White Pelicans, Wood Storks, White Ibis, Roseate Spoonbills and many more species of fabulous waterbirds. Along the river you may find dolphin chasing mullet, experience a manatee nursing a newborn calf, or take delight in watching an ever playful family of river otter. Along the shore you will enjoy the antics of a family of emus and a flock of Welsh Harlequin ducks that free range along the shoreline and swim in the river. Most days the morning sunrises and evening sunsets are aglow with brilliant colors that will take your breath away. For the adventurous, night time kayaking reveals brilliant stars and planets above - and - with a flashlight shone on the water the surface appears as a sheet of glass and you can see fish, turtles, and other creatures underwater as if you are watching them through a window. Amazing, breathtaking, and captivating moments and memories await you at Riverlake Cottage in Homosassa Florida.

Heaven on earth! Magical & peaceful...

  • 5 of 5

I cannot thank Joanne & Gary Sr. enough for such a lovely stay. The “cabin” (more like a house!) is spacious, clean, charming, equipped with everything you need (or forgot to bring!) - and the pond is like a scene from Avatar at night - an incredible sparkling light show. Kayaking is right there and one of the best times I’ve had on the water. I included a scallop and fishing adventure which I got through Gary Jr. at River Adventure Tours. What an unforgettable day! Believe me, the entire trip from beginning to end was better than I ever dreamed, and exactly what my soul needed. I look forward to returning VERY soon with family and friends! Hats off to these beautiful warm-hearted hosts! You are blessings on this earth! Thank you for that little piece of heaven I so ever needed! I will cherish this trip forever!

Always great staying here. Beautiful area and nice and quiet. Perfect location.

Joanne is great at communicating all details for your stay. I've stayed here before and we loved it so much we came back again. Perfect location if you plan on scalloping, or just need to get away. Cottage is nice and clean. Most of the home has been remodeled recently and looks great. Thanks for opening your cottage to us once again. We will be back!

Gorgeous property! Peaceful and relaxing! Treasured family memories!

  • 5 of 5

Riverlake cottage is a gem on Florida's nature coast! Joanne made us feel so welcome by greeting us with a special welcome sign, music, and candles. She is great at giving suggestions about local attractions, restaurants, etc. The clean cottage was spacious enough for our family of six and equipped with essentials from big, plush towels to coffee and seasonings! Our kids enjoyed the bigger room and cozy kid side room, and my husband and I liked our fountain view! The decor is perfect for a cabin. The screened-in porch was a great spot for our grilled dinner and hanging out. Family favorites include fishing off the floating dock--a first catch for three family members--and kayaking--flying fish and beautiful birds but no manatee nor dolphin spotting for us! Truly we were experiencing a piece--and peace-- of Heaven on Earth kayaking those quiet waters. That, and coffee on the floating dock, where I had time to talk with God and count my blessings in such a relaxing setting, were my personal favorites! What a much needed break before our busy summer! Thank you, Joanne and Gary.

Owner's Response: Brett and Jennifer, Thank you so much for the kind words. We enjoyed meeting your family and getting to see your younger kids experience their first kayaking and canoe adventure. We were so delighted to hear that three of your family caught their first-ever fish right in the back yard of the cottage! It really makes our day to be a part of families making treasured memories. Look forward to having you back again! Gary and Joanne

Tranquillity near the springs!

  • 5 of 5

The riverlake cottage is perfect for a relaxing stay near the springs (25 min from Weeki Wachee and 35 min from Rainbow Springs). Beautiful property adjacent to the owners home whom are very welcoming and always a call away if you need anything. There are plenty of kayaks that you may use on Gary & Joanne’s property where there is also a kayak ramp to launch from, on the way to the kayaks and ramp area you will encounter a friendly pig, baby emus, and tons of ducks. Thank you Gary & Joanne for being so helpful and hospitable during our stay, we had an amazing time!

Nice quiet retreat, Joanne was awesome!

  • 5 of 5

If you book this expecting the Ritz, you will be disappointed. But, if you book this expecting a fishing shack, you will think you are at the Ritz. You could spend the summer in this place and never run out of games, movies or places to fish. Our stay was brief, but if we are ever back in this part of Florida again, this will be the first place I look to book.
