About Gary and Joanne Bartell

We'd like to introduce ourselves. We are Gary and Joanne Bartell. We moved to Homosassa in 1988 to raise our family and quickly got involved with local politics to help shape the future of our community. Gary served as a County Commissioner from 1990 to 2010 and was chairman of the Tourist Development Council for 14 years. Joanne was a founding board member of the Nature Coast Envirothon, a high school environmental education and scholarship program. We both enjoyed spending countless hours over the years educating the youth of the community about the rare and precious natural resources found in this area. Our vision has always been to protect and preserve these amazing natural resources for generations to come.

Gary and Joanne Bartell purchased this cottage in 2012

Why Gary and Joanne Bartell chose Florida Central Gulf Coast

The Riverlake Cottage property was originally owned by Dazzy Vance, the Hall of Fame major league baseball player (1915 - 1935) who once told a New York Times reporter that all he wanted to do in life is 'to play baseball and fish in Homosassa'. In 1995 we had the opportunity to purchase part of Vance's original land holdings but the Lakefront property was tied up in an estate until November 2012 when a for sale sign appeared on the front lawn - we bought it that same day. With only 10 private property owners along the entire Halls River, Riverlake Cottage is our opportunity to share a rare piece of Old Florida with you.

What makes this cottage unique

The Halls River is a rare piece of Old Florida. Largely undeveloped, the river is a birder's paradise, a fisherman's delight, and a photographer's dream. Blue Crab, Bass, Bream, Sunfish, Redfish, Snook, Ladyfish, Mullet, and various other species of fish can all be seen swimming about in the Halls River. In the sky above you will find Bald Eagles, Green Herons, White Pelicans, Wood Storks, White Ibis, Roseate Spoonbills and many more species of fabulous waterbirds. Along the river you may find dolphin chasing mullet or experience a manatee nursing a newborn calf. Along the shore you will enjoy the antics of a family of emus and a flock of Welsh Harlequin ducks that free range along the shoreline and swim in the river. Most days the morning sunrises and evening sunsets are aglow with brilliant colors that will take your breath away. For the adventurous, night time kayaking or canoeing reveals brilliant stars and planets above - and - with a flashlight shone on the water the surface appears as a sheet of glass and you can see fish, turtles, and other creatures underwater as if you are watching them through a window. Amazing, breathtaking, and captivating moments and memories await you at Riverlake Cottage in Homosassa Florida.

A kayakers paradise! Perfect in every way!

  • 5 of 5

The listing for the cottage was very accurate. We loved the layout of the house. The living space was very large and the kitchen was both spacious and well equipped. One thing I did notice was that there was NEVER a shortage of hot water! Which makes it very nice when traveling with more adults. With only one bathroom there is always a fear of running out of hot water. No worries here!! The bedroom was a nice size and the bed was extremely comfortable! The home was very clean and well taken care of.

The central location of the cottage was great! We were never more than a 20-30 minute car ride from any of the locations we paddled. We were able to paddle the Halls River from the cottage the first night we arrived, it was breath taking! The following day we met my parents at the Chassahowitzka River where we met the resident manatee Rachel and her two babies! We explored the many springs with the caves and even found "The Crack"!

We were able to take a short ride North to Dunnellon to explore the Rainbow River which was completely stunning!

Locally we explored the Homosassa River, Monkey Island, Crystal River and Three Sisters springs area. The highlight of the trip for me was kayaking on the Weeki Wachee River.

We can not wait to come back with our kids!

Thank you so much Gary & Joanne for sharing your beautiful cottage with us!

Amazing Vacation Spot!

  • 5 of 5

Words cannot express just how wonderful of a location this is. The cottage is immaculate and the small bedroom/den area that is connected to the master bedroom was perfect for our little ones. We had our privacy and had them under our watchful eyes at the same time. We spent our days kayaking, swimming and picnicking on the Halls River. The water is crystal clear and our children squealed with delight at all the fish, crabs, stingray and turtles swimming by our kayaks. The highlight of our trip was a baby manatee that swam and rolled in the water right next to our kayak and he seemed to enjoy our attention every bit as much as we did his. Memories were made that will be with us forever.

Best Two Day Vacation. Ever!!

  • 5 of 5

My two kids, my sister and I stayed at Riverlake Cottage for 2 days and we did not want to leave. Joanne and Gary are welcoming and extremely attentive. The cottage is immaculate and very well stocked from bug spray to coffee and more. It is homey, clean, beautifully decorated and spacious. The little den next to the Master Bedroom was a nice, welcomed surprise that my eight year old loved as he made it his own little space!!

I cannot say enough about the outside, the beautiful private lake with its picnic table, where we fished and relaxed looking at the birds and fish. The river, so close was "amazing " we kayaked twice and watched the sunset right from the deck!!

My sister and I agreed Riverlake Cottage is breathtaking and we are already making plans to come back!!

Thanks Joanne and Gary for sharing your home with us!!

Relax by the water!

  • 5 of 5

The Riverlake Cottage is a homey place to relax for several days. It was so convenient to have kayaks available on the river. The owners had every base covered from suntan lotions, bug spray, fully stocked kitchen, restaurant menus, and even flowers for my wife's birthday!

There's some changes from the photos though. The house is now white with blue trim, there is a dock with a picnic table on the lake (a really relaxing spot) and sadly, the Adirondack chairs are gone.

We went on the Old Florida boat tour with Captain Gary and thoroughly enjoyed the trip.

We had a wonderful trip to Riverlake cottage and came home relaxed and refreshed.

Love this place

  • 5 of 5

This was our third trip to RiverLake Cottage. We just love this place. The cottage is comfortable and clean. The property is so enjoyable. Our favorite feature is the large and comfortably furnished screen porch. This stay a red tail hawk spent an afternoon flying around the front yard and perching on a tree branch that was in perfect view from the screened porch. We also enjoyed sitting on the porch during a summer rain and watched the turtles swimming about in the backyard lake and a great blue heron who took cover under a tree about 30 feet from where we were sitting. Our last trip we were treated to a bobcat passing through the yard while we drank our morning coffee on the porch. In the evenings we enjoyed sitting by the river with our glasses of wine to watch the beautiful sunsets. Every few minutes a fish would leap up out of the water and jump two or three times. We will be back again!

Best. Vacation. Ever.

  • 5 of 5

Hands-down. Best vacation either of us has ever taken!

This was a sisters that are best friends getaway and we could not have picked a better place to stay.

The cottage was perfect. Clean and Comfy. The personal touches gave it a cozy and homey atmosphere. We felt welcome as soon as we walked in the door.

Kayaking on the river was a lot of fun and there was much to see. There is the cutest restaurant that you can easily paddle to -- Greenhouse Bistro. Reservations are recommended which we didn't know but when they saw us pull up by kayak they made room for us and made us feel very welcome. The lunch was superb and it was a nice relaxing paddle back to the cottage afterward.

We have both been scalloping many times before but this was the best trip ever because of Captain Gary and River Adventure Tours. HIGHLY recommend this young man! He is polite, helpful, well spoken and very knowledgeable about the history of the area and the river. We were having so much fun we extended our water tour to a full day adding in a backwaters tour that was so amazing we are still talking about it. We saw everything from a family of manatee, dolphin chasing and feeding on mullet, crabs galore, stingray and a family of emus frolicking and playing along the bank of the river. So many pictures and memories.

We highly recommend Riverlake Cottage and if you are looking for a scallop, manatee, dolphin, fishing, or backwater tour we can not say enough about the fabulous fun time we had with RIVER ADVENTURE TOURS.
