Overview

About the property

3 Bedroom, 2 Bathroom (Sleeps 6)

Our house sits on a half-acre lot located on a quiet street that rings 61-acre Sunset Lake. At 55 feet, this NO-WAKE lake is one of the deepest in Portage County, and the water quality is excellent. (Note that our Sunset Lake is not the lake with the same name located in the Chain of Lakes. However, from our house it's only a half-hour drive to the Chain of Lakes.)

WINTER:

CROSS-COUNTRY SKIING-- The Iola Winter Sports Club (open to non-members) is located about 5 miles from our house.

SNOWMOBILES-- About one-half mile from our house is a trunk trail that leads to a major snowmobile trail going all the way to Green Bay. (Note that you have to trailer your snowmobile for that half-mile.)

SNOWSHOEING-- on the nearby Ice Age Trail and in other close locations.

ICE-FISHING-- on Sunset Lake.

(Winter accessibility: The house is on a township road that is plowed regularly, and the sidewalk and driveway are cleaned after any substantial snow.)

SUMMER:

Enjoy swimming, fishing, canoeing, kayaking, windsurfing, and sailing on this no-wake lake.

LATE SPRING, SUMMER, AND FALL:

RIDE BIKES-- on the low-traffic roads in the area.

HIKE-- on trails in the area.

You can do both also on the extensive Green Trail system in Stevens Point, located about 15 minutes from our house.

Please note that NO HUNTING IS PERMITTED ON OUR PROPERTY.

The split-level, 2,000 sq-ft house is cozy and comfortable. A master bedroom, two smaller bedrooms, and one bath are located on the top level. A game area with a pool table, a sitting area in front of a fireplace, and a second bath are located on the lower level. On the main level are the dining area, den, laundry room with washer and dryer, and kitchen. The kitchen is fully equipped, including stove/oven, dishwasher, microwave, coffee maker, cooking pots and utensils, and dishware. Bath towels and bed linens are supplied. There is an attached 2-car garage, central heating and central air, WiFi, cable, a flat-screen TV, and local and long-distance phone service.

From the dining area, step onto a deck that looks on a yard with mature trees that slopes down to 100 feet of lakefront with a sand shore. The swimming area is also sandy until about 4-5 feet deep, where it begins to get somewhat mucky. An aluminum dock at shore level is in place from approximately April through October -- no stairs to climb. There's good fishing, including walleye, panfish, bluegill, and trout. A fire pit is in the back yard. (Note that, per State regulations, due to oak wilt and pests, firewood from a source farther than 20 miles from our house can't be brought in. You can buy firewood from our manager at a very reasonable price.)

Many annual events are held in the area throughout the year--such as the Iola Car Show in July, the Energy Fair in June, the Iola Winter Carnival in February, the Waupaca Festival of the Arts in August, and the Hidden Studios Art Tour in October. The Midwest Renewable Energy Association (MERA) holds workshops in the area. The Central Wisconsin Environmental Station, which sponsors camps and workshops, is located on Sunset Lake a short distance away.

Central Waters Brewing Company, located in nearby Amherst, brews a variety of great beers and is open Friday-Sunday evenings. On Saturday and Sunday mornings (8 am until noon), nationally known Ruby Coffee Roasters has a tasting room open in nearby Nelsonville. Great gelato and pizza can be had at The Millstone of Iola Mills in nearby Iola.

No smoking allowed indoors.

No pets allowed. (We had to change our policy, due to problems with pets not being kept on a leash.).

Perfect for our family Christmas weekend.

  • 5 of 5

It was the perfect place to host Christmas with our adult sons and their spouses. We were able to bring some personal holiday touches which made it feel more like home. There was plenty of room for all and the view of the lake was wonderful. We enjoyed playing games around the dining room table, watching a Christmas movie, shooting pool and opening gifts by the fireplace in the family room. There were lots of memories being made. We would definitely stay again.

Great house, beautiful setting!

  • 5 of 5

This place was perfect for our 4 person girls weekend. Great, clean and fully stocked house. (Only thing missing was extra toilet paper! ;)) Wish the weather was better so we could have enjoyed the beautiful, peaceful lake. Highly recommended.

Awesome lake house!

  • 5 of 5

Had a great girls getaway weekend - the house had everything we needed and more. We fished from our kayaks, grilled, walked and took in the stunning autumn colors, and even brought the fixings along to bake a couple of fall pies! Beautiful calm lake, felt very private even with neighbors on either side. We’d stay again!

Great VRBO!

  • 5 of 5

This is our second trip to this VRBO, and I suspect it won't be the last. The house was clean and it looks like there have been some upgrades since our first visit (which was back in 2013). The high-speed wifi and smart TV, neither of which was at all expected, were a nice bonus that we took advantage of (along with the billiards table) due to poor weather. Overall great place!

Beautiful vacation getaway spot.

  • 5 of 5

My friends and I have been participating in girls' weekend for many, many years. We have rented many different cottages, condos and homes in different areas of Wisconsin.

A few years ago we found this rental home on Sunset Lake in Amherst Junction, WI. This past weekend we returned for our 4th time and enjoyed one of the most relaxing girls' weekends ever.

Unlike some of the places we've been to in the past, this beautiful home is well kept and always clean upon our arrival. It has a fully equipped kitchen and more than enough linens, towels, etc, to accommodate our needs.

There are also plenty of nearby places to eat, drink, shop, etc.

Both the owner of the property and the manager of the property are very friendly and go out of their way to please us. They are also easily available should you need to reach them. They have gone above and beyond to make every one of our trips there memorable. (EX: Upon leaving this past Saturday, my car would not start. In our desperation, with the lack of our mechanical abilities, we contacted the manager, Glenn. I was shocked when he said he'd be right over. Fortunately, we were able to get the car started with the help of a friendly neighbor before Glenn arrived a few minutes later. I apologized for calling him out and his response was "It's my job". I couldn't believe it.

It's wonderful have founding a place that we all so much enjoy. There is not one thing that we have been unhappy with since we started going there and plan on returning again in spring and many years after.

I definitely give this place a 5 star rating.

Great home, great location!

  • 5 of 5

My family and friends had a great stay at Sunset lake. The home is spacious and comfortable, with all the modern amenities. The yard, lake and dock are all well cared for. Glen, the caretaker, even came and jump-started our car! Communication with him and with the owner prior to our stay was great as well. Super easy to work with!

I only wish the weather had been better. :-) Only 2 suggestions for the kitchen - a wine bottle opener and a pizza cutter would be great! Everything else was well appointed and very much appreciated.

We will definitely be looking to book again the next time we visit the area. Thanks for a lovely visit!
