About Mel Yanos
Your host, Mel, was born and raised in North Kohala. As a vacation rental operator in North Kohala, he is one of an elite few who can make that claim. He learned the heart of hospitality from his parents who immigrated from the Philippines. Later he learned the business of hospitality at Cornell University. After a lifelong hotel career which took him to San Francisco, Los Angeles, San Diego, Puerto Rico, Boston, Anchorage, Kauai and Hawaii Island, Mel returns to the essence of hospitality as originally learned from his parents . . . giving from the heart.
Why Mel Yanos chose Hawi
After living in many parts of the country, Mel chose to return to his birthplace. It’s often spoken that one chooses to go to Kohala; Kohala is a destination. Unlike other locales, Kohala is set apart from the Mamalahoa Highway which encircles Hawaii Island. The isolated nothern geographical location and its warm residents give Kohala its unique sense of community unlike any other.
What makes this Apartment unique
Lei O Kohala is about our ancestors, the melding of cultures, and the sacredness of the land. It’s about how we love and respect those around us and the environment we live in. Mel embraces these spiritual ideals and wants his guests to experience the Art of Hospitality in the old Hawaiian style and grace. He carefully crafted Lei O Kohala Vacation Rental so his guests will feel the peace, serenity and love from this special place in Puuepa.

Better than the photos.
I was pleasantly surprised. It's the bottom part of the house and was larger than I thought and well stocked. The view was great and I really felt like I was away. Mel is the nicest, most hospitable host. It's true what the other reviewers say--he makes breakfast. There is a porch that spans the width of the house with a table and chairs to eat and enjoy the view. He was also nice enough to take time to give me a short tour and history of Hawi.
Mahalo for being my guest! I am so pleased that you embraced the peace, calm and beauty from the veranda overlooking the Alenuihaha Channel and Maui island in the distance. You’ve touched and impressed me with your pilgrimage to your ancestors. Blessings, MEL
Relaxation at its FINEST

The view is amazing, the place is spacious and Mel could not be a more gracious or helpful host. I wish we could have stayed longer!
Nice open space
Mel was a fantastic host, warm and inviting and provided us with wonderful food for breakfast. Comfortable space in Hawi town with a full kitchen and easy access to the belt road. Some amazing food in Hawi. We enjoyed Rock Sushi and Mi Ranchito. Both exceptional. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay on this end of the Island of Hawaii.n Thanks Mel.
Thank you for being my guests. I was honored to put you in touch with the caretaker of Kohala’s historical Kamehameha statue. Best of luck on your project. It was a joy to have Brickston and his youthful energy!
Great get away, comfortable accommodations great owner and host
The property portray's a truly Hawaiian style experience. Lovely appointed unit with all the basic necessities of a home away from home and then some. The Host and owner was very engaged with the guest which offered special unexpected amenities. If you want to experience Kohala/Kamuela/ Waimea this is the place to stay for easy access and numerous experiences. We will be back.
Mahalo for your kind review. I am glad that Kohala Guest Suite met your expectations and more. I look forward to your return visit. MEL
Breakfast made this over the top!
Great location for relaxing and not getting in the midst of the hustle and bussle of the city. We loved waking up to the chilly air, having breakfast delivered on the lanai and not rushing to get out. It’s kind of a long drive to the bigger sights but the drive to and from had some gorgeous views we wouldn’t have seen if we stayed in a major hotel. We loved it!!!
Aloha! It’s always an honor to have Kamaaina guests. Na Kamaaina are more discerning in their choice of where to stay simply because they have first hand knowledge of our beautiful aina. I’m glad you enjoyed and appreciated the “room service” breakfasts. Malama Pono! MEL
