This charming one bedroom, detached house is the original 1940s stableman’s quarters for the Bette Davis estate Riverbottom. The cabin is fresh, vibrant and newly refurbished while still maintaining some of its unique, original features.
The cool, open LIVING ROOM and KITCHEN has high ceilings, exposed beams, white wood floors and original art on the walls. The front door and main windows face the garden, trees and hammock, and the stable block. The back windows look out over the neighboring horse paddocks and in the far distance, the LA Equestrian Center and the setting sun beyond that.
The BEDROOM is small, simple, with a Custom Comfort (very comfortable) queen sized bed. There’s built-in closet/storage area. A small fold out couch at the foot of the bed (that can be used as a second bed).
The BATHROOM has a groovy tiled shower and looks out through arched windows toward the pool.
Named after Humphrey Bogart’s character Michael O’Leary, the stableman in Davis’ 1939 film Dark Victory; the cabin enjoys a 32” flat screen tv with both digital cable and Apple TV and Netfix, there’s wifi throughout the estate. Heating and air-conditioning are in the wall unit in the living room; the laundry (clothes washer and drier) in the adjoining utility room.
We have keyless entry and the grounds are large enough that the house feels very private. With the added bonus that we are right there to answer questions or fix anything that may arise.
We share the estate with other houses that are available for let

Rivergate is a private, historic equestrian ESTATE. It enjoys massive organic gardens, almost half acre of drought tolerant garden with an abundance of butterflies and birds, saltwater pool and spa, hammocks, shade trees, French Lavender maze for toddlers to learn to walk through, art studio, fire pit, fountain area, fruit orchard, outdoor dining areas… and Wi-Fi throughout. O’Leary's Cottage the most private house available, at the far end of the sandy back garden. It is not uncommon as the sun is setting that we all gather to play or chat in the garden, the park, or in the front orchard. It is a unique place and a little hard to describe, it feels a little like a village on a summer day.
I live part time on the estate with my two young children Winston and Vivienne. I am originally from London, England. I take my role as host very seriously and personally. I have won the Hero Award form another Holiday Rental site. We have a kind and hardworking team here and we do our very best to make sure that you have a great time.
Amy B purchased this house in 2012
The NEIGHBORHOOD upscale and residential. Many of the large houses have private stables and it is common to see cowboys riding in the streets. We are just a few miles from Los Feliz, Silver Lake and Atwater (two exits on the freeway, about 5 minutes). We are bicycling distance from the studios (NBC, CBS, Warner Bros, Disney, Nickelodeon …). Additionally, there are four golf courses very near, as well as Travel Town, the LA Zoo, The Autry Museum, several horse riding facilities and playgrounds, Pickwick ice-skating and bowling and of course the wildlife and 52 miles of hiking and horse riding trails in Grffith Park.
Don’t let the rural setting and the hooting of the owls fool you, we are still in the heart of the city and you should be aware that you can sometimes hear the freeway, helicopters, dogs and sirens typical of city living. I mention it because it seems out of place while you lounge in the sun on the lawn feeling like you are out in the country.
There are great cycling trails and running tracks throughout the neighborhood and into the Park. Downtown Los Angeles is about 15 minutes away, depending a little on the infamous LA traffic (there is a shortcut through the park along Riverside Drive that is very pretty and cuts out some of the traffic).
Burbank and Glendale are home to loads of shopping including the Americana (a high end outdoor mall with fountain, fine restaurants and events). A Pavilions supermarket is one of the finest around and within walking distance.
Amy is a great host, friendly and helpful. I appreciated the detailed driving directions as well as the property instructions that were on the dining room table when I arrived. O'Leary's cabin was perfectly located for my trip and I was happy to be Amy's guest for this stay.
One note on O'Leary's cabin that's not in the description - the cabin is one arm of an L-shaped building. The other arm of the building are stalls where two horses are in residence. I enjoyed their presence but it was a surprise when I checked into the cabin in the evening and shortly after heard a boisterous whinny! The horses are quiet 98 percent of the time and I got a real kick out of leaving them a daily apple treat!
RESPONSE FROM AMY:
Misty and Curly are new additions to our stables here at Rivergate. The stables were uninhabited and a little lonely so we adopted them. Probably, like us humans in a new place, the horses called out to a stranger in the dark. I think is what happened here.
Misty, the little gray pony, and Curly, the old bay man; are now quite seasoned to us.
I am sure Chandra got a surprise, the previous house description described the stables as uninhabited. I should say that the stables are tended twice a day, they are about 50 feet from the house, and we find add to the charm and enjoyment of the estate.
I LOVED THIS PLACE. I ONLY STAYED FOR ONE DAY FOR MY CHRISTMAS BIRTHDAY. BUT I SAVORED ALL OF THE QUIETNESS AND LOVELINESS OF THIS CHARMING PLACE. ALTHOUGH YOU NEED A SENSE OF HUMOR FOR THE ENTRANCE TO THE PLACE. I HAD A FEW BAGS THAT I HAD TO GET FROM MY CAR AND I WAS IN AND OUT OF THE PLACE A FEW TIMES AND I HAD TO INPUT MY CODE INTO THE KEY PAD A FEW TIMES. WELL AT ONE POINT THE DOOR CODE STOPPED WORKING. I'M WONDERING IF THAT IS WHY THE FRONT WINDOWS BY THE DOOR WERE LEFT UNLOCKED AND THAT THE WINDOW SCREEN APPEARED LOOSE. THAT MIGHT HAVE HAPPENED BEFORE MAYBE TO SOMEONE ELSE. I HAD TO JUMP THE WINDOW REALLY QUICKLY. IT WAS A REALLY COLD NIGHT AND I'M JUST GLAD THAT I WAS ABLE TO GET INTO THE HOUSE PLACE SOMEHOW VERY QUICKLY. I TRIED THE DOOR CODE AGAIN MUCH LATER ON IN THE NIGHT AND IT STILL DIDN'T WORK LATER ON IN THE NIGHT. IT JUST SEEMED FROZEN AND UNRESPONSIVE. MY PHONE WAS RUNNING LOW ON BATTERY AND IT WOULD HAVE BEEN REALLY INTERESTING CALLING FOR HELP IF THE FRONT WINDOW WASN'T OPEN. I DON'T KNOW WHAT COULD BE DONE ABOUT THAT. I DON'T KNOW IF KEY LOCKS ARE ANY BETTER. I'VE NEVER HAD THAT MUCH EXTENSIVE EXPERIENCE WITH ANY OF THOSE ENTRY THINGS. VERY LIMITED EXPERIENCE WITH THOSE TYPES OF ENTRY THINGS. I WOULD DEFINITELY STAY HERE AGAIN. THE SHOWER AND THE POOL AND THE SPA AND THE GARDENS AND THE FIRE PITS WHICH I DIDN'T ACTUALLY USE BUT WANTED TO USE, AND THE CHARMING LITTLE FIRE PLACE INSIDE OF THE HOUSE PLACE WOULD MAKE ME WANT TO STAY HERE ALL OVER AGAIN. AND THE ADDED CHARM THAT THIS PLACE IS ACTUALLY AN OLD STABLE REALLY MADE MY CHRISTMAS BIRTHDAY STAY HERE FEEL REALLY SPECIAL AND MAGICAL. THE HEATER WORKS WELL ENOUGH FOR A COLD NIGHT. JUST DON'T OPEN THE DOOR TOO OFTEN TO LET IN THE COLD AND WINDY NIGHT AIR BECAUSE THE HEATER DOESN'T HEAT UP THAT QUICKLY IN MY OPINION. UNLESS YOU HAVE THE THE LITTLE INSIDE FIRE PLACE WORKING WHICH I THINK WOULD HELP GREATLY WITH THE HEATING UP OF THE PLACE REALLY QUICKLY. JUST DON'T OPEN THE DOOR TOO OFTEN I THINK. I LOVED THE COFFEEMAKER. IT WAS HOT AND PERFECT WITH MY MILK. FRIDGE IS SMALL BUT WORKS GOOD ENOUGH. FREEZER TAKES AWHILE TO FREEZE SOMEWHAT. MAYBE THAT COULD BE ADJUSTED SOMEHOW. I DIDN'T CHECK ALTHOUGH. I LOVED THIS HOUSE PLACE OVERALL.
The place is nice. Cosy and comfortable. Amy is a wonderful host and always reachable for any questions.
This was my 7 or 8 th stay with Amy VBRO. That says something! Great place for us to welcome new grand babies & visit with Burbank family. Family comes to play & swim, we return to recharge! Thanks Amy
This place is a hidden gem. Absolutely charming! It's set back off the gated driveway and very quite and excluded. The rush of being in LA goes away when you enter here. The bed was so comfy, linens are fresh, and Amy the perfect hostess. I will define tally be coming back to stay. Very close to all the production studios.
Everything was wonderful--the house, the pool, the yard, the fire pit, and Amy was incredibly responsive whenever we had questions. This was our second stay here, because after the first why would we want to vacation anywhere else?
Perfectly located, super clean, very quiet and peaceful - if like me you have to travel to LA for business and are tired of seeing the same hotel rooms over and over again, this made my whole travel week so much better! having a bowl of cereal outside in the sun beats the Hampton Inn buffet!
and to top it off, Amy the owner is very helpful and super nice!
