About Nancy Essig
I grew up and have lived my entire life in the suburbs of Chicago, Illinois. I visited the cabin the first time when I was 3 months old. In those days there were no highways and it took 2 days with an overnite to make the 600 plus miles. After my parents bought the cottage from my father's parents in the 1950's we children were able to spend most of the summer with mom. Dad would go home and work a couple weeks then return again. It was great! After I graduated high school I worked several jobs and fell in love with travel. So in 1967 I began my career with Eastern Airlines and worked there for 21 years till our office was closed in 1988. 6 weeks later I began my business with Mary Kay cosmetics as a Sales Director and am celebrating 27 years. I enjoy having flexibility to have time to spend with my family. It's great to be retired but working and spending so much time with my granddaughter Mia who is 6 years old!
Nancy Essig purchased this Cabin in 1945
Why Nancy Essig chose Menahga
Mia, my granddaughter is 9 years old now and the 5th generation to vacation and enjoy time at the cottage. It's peaceful and beautiful here and you can get close to nature and your family. You can kick back and do nothing or keep yourself busy everyday if you like. The area and town of Park Rapids are quaint with so much to see and do.
What makes this Cabin unique
There are so many reasons why I love our cottage. One reason is the wonderful memories of the entire family being together. Grandfather making pancakes for breakfast and ringing the bell for us to come and get it! Fishing expeditions with the family and sitting around the table at night playing scrabble or canasta. The house looks like something out of a storybook and the view of the lake and birds is relaxing. The lake is right out your front door so perfect for playing in the sand, swimming, sunning, fishing or having a picnic!

September at Hines Lake
The cabin is super comfortable and a serene and peaceful place. Nancy was most attentive suggesting things to do and special places to dine. Since our vacation included travel west we really appreciated the washer and dryer. A special memory is the shimmer of the moon on the lake as the light traveled across. That was magical!
It was a pleasure to have you visit the “cozy cottage”. I’m happy you got to enjoy being on our quiet peaceful lake plus enjoy the fun town, restaurants and sights in the Park Rapids area.
I hope you will come back and visit again. It’s been wonderful to share our little peace of heaven with nice folks like you!
We wanted a cabin with a lake view that wasn't part of a large resort and this fit the bill! The owner, Nancy, was easy to communicate with regarding check in and any other questions we had. This home has been enjoyed by several generations of her family, and is filled with their photos and memories. It is well kept and contains just about anything you could need for your stay. We enjoyed campfires in the evening and riding bikes on the gravel roads by the cottage. The birdfeeders were always busy, and we got to hear the resident loon every day! There is a paddleboat and a rowboat for guest use, too. Great place to relax and refresh.

"Cozy Lake Cottage"
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at this quaint old-fashioned cottage. We had everything we needed for our stay and Nancy was prompt at answering any questions we had. We stayed with our daughter, son-in-law and our three grandchildren 5, 3, and 1. Plenty of room. It was mid-July and our weather was perfect for being at the lake and spending most of our time in the water. We were close to Itasca State Park and spent a lovely morning walking across the Mississippi Headwaters. Park Rapids has everything you need for your stay and a nice downtown area.

Wonderful cabin for relaxation and spending time with family
Stayed at the cozy cottage for one week with my husband, two daughters and grandchildren. The cabin has everything you need in the kitchen, and sleeping accommodations are very good. I personally slept in the porch bedroom and loved waking up to a lake view and bird sounds. There are various bird feeders and bird houses on the property, if you are a bird enthusiast, you will love this.
Nancy was very attentive and it was very easy to communicate with her. I would definitely stay here again.
Dear Martinez family,
It was a pleasure to have you stay at our cozy cottage with your family recently. We love sharing our “little place of heaven” with families like yours to make lifelong memories. I hope you will make plans to come again next year. Thank you for the wonderful review! Enjoy the rest of the summer. Nancy
Felt like going to grandma's house!
We loved our family stay at the cozy cottage! We did a family get-together at the cabin, and all of my siblings and I agreed that the cabin felt like "going to grandma's house" and truly did have a very cozy, family feel. We appreciated the small touches, such as the hammocks facing the lake, beautiful flowers outside and the fire pit close to the water. The lake is small and quiet, which we also appreciated. It may be helpful to note that two of the bedrooms have doors, while one bedroom has a curtain for a door covering. The house had everything we needed, and the kids caught a lot of sunfish from the dock! The cabin is close to park rapids, which was also handy! Overall, we loved the experience, and would like to return again, although our family may be too large at that point for the cabin.
Nice roomy cabin
We enjoyed the roomy, homey cabin and the nice yard and beach. Nancy was very easy to work with throughout our booking and stay. We had some issues with the boat launch and she did her best to help us out. Overall we had a nice time. We really enjoyed watching the birds!
Dear Ruth and family

I'm sorry the boat launch problem did not get solved immediately as we were promised but we sure tried. My goal is to always nake sure you have a wonderful time making memories with your loved ones. Thanks for taking the time to write a nice review!! Hope you will visit again!! Nancy
Golfer's and fisherman's paradise!
Festivals and fun events all
!! We are just 200 miles North of the twin cities, 90 miles from Fargo, North Dakota, and 50 miles from Bemidji, Minnesota. You will love the small town of Park Rapids, Minnesota, just 5 miles away with shopping, restaurants, coffee shops, grocery stores and a movie theatre. Our cottage is on a quiet lake, in the woods. You'll enjoy watching the purple martins, hummingbirds, yellow finches, orioles and more! The lake is perfect for swimming, relaxing, fishing or boating. You will enjoy all the activites available in Park Rapids which is 5 miles away. There are bike rentals in town with an awesome paved bike path that goes on for miles and miles. Why not bike to Dorset, have lunch or ice cream while there. Check out the antiques and have your pictures taken in the old west costumes. Fun! Park Rapids is a great town with pizza and other restaurants. You may want to have ice cream or a float at the ice cream shop on main street or visit Bella cafe for a great coffee, internet and delicious food. Or you may enjoy visiting the headwaters of the Mississippi, just 20 minutes away. Golf courses are nearby and plentiful, it's a golfers paradise! Strawberry and blueberry picking at the local farms in season is something the kids enjoy. There's so much to see and do. After fishing or boating in the evening, it's fun to gather around the campfire and roast some hot dogs and smores and discuss the days adventures and what's on for tomorrow. I know you will feel relaxed, comfortable and happy here!
