I started the total restoration of this cottage in 2008 with a local architect. I have retained as many of its original features as possible, bringing it into the 21st century. I split my time between London and Orford so this cottage is not a permanent holiday let but a well cared-for, luxurious home where no expense has been spared on its refurbishment. Old cottages can often be dark, but this cottage offers a bright interior with quality limestone flooring, light oak doors, white walls and modern lighting. It's the old meeting the new.
Angie purchased this cottage in 2008
A characterful mid-terrace cottage in one of Orford's quiet idyllic roads (of which there are many), yet only a minute away from the foodie pubs and cafes/restaurants of this picturesque village. Beautiful views of Orford Church and Orford Castle make the cottage irresistible. The village is special in itself with opportunities for sailing, birdwatching, walking and cycling and exploring the historic Orford Ness. In addition there is quick and easy access to other gems on the Suffolk Heritage Coast: Aldeburgh, Walberswick, Dunwich, Woodbridge and Southwold. I have to drag myself away from the place whenever I leave to return to London.
The cottage is extremely quiet - in the morning there's nothing much more noisy than birdsong. Yet, within a minute, you can be in the village square having breakfast in the renowned Pump Street Bakery or having a bacon butty at Pen's cafe in the village shop. There are two good pubs within easy staggering distance of the cottage - not to mention the acclaimed Crown and Castle Hotel. Walks are plentiful, either down to the quay for sight of the boats bobbing around on the water or along the river banks.
Orford, on the Suffolk Heritage Coast, is a perfect unspoilt village to spend a relaxing holiday. There are many walks, boat trips on the Ore estuary, visits to Orford Castle, Orford Church, the RSPB's Havergate Island for bird lovers, as well as Orford Ness National Trust Nature Reserve. Bicycles can be hired from the local garage and there are riding stables close by.
There are two pubs, two fish smokeries, the renowned Butley Oysterage fish restaurant and the Crown and Castle hotel, run by cookery writer Ruth Watson with its highly rated Trinity restaurant. Plus there is an award winning bakery with small restaurant and our much loved village shop. A foodie paradise in East Anglia.
Also within close proximity are Aldeburgh (with its summer theatre season and springtime literary festival), music and the arts at Snape Maltings, Woodbridge, Minsmere, Thorpeness, National Trust properties, the sea and the delightful town of Southwold are within easy reach. The entire length of the Suffolk coastline has been designated an area of outstanding natural beauty
