|Minimum Stay||2 nights|
Cute cabin with 3/4 bath, fully functional kitchen, sleeps 4 adults. Access to a beautiful 160 acre lake (Thomas Lake). Perfect for couples or single family.
This is the best of all worlds for a getaway- secluded enough to get rest and relaxation, yet close enough to the best of the North Shore, and supplies and retail still within a reasonable drive.
This property is on Thomas Lake, which is 18 miles due north and inland from Two Harbors. The lake has about 45 cabins and homes along its shoreline, with less than half of them used year-round.
The cabin sits on two acres, with the lake and dock about 100 yards from the cabin, down a gentle slope - perfect for launching kayaks and canoes. The only cabins visible from the Thomas Lake Cabin are across the bay, with the neighboring cabins are separated by stands of trees.
Fishing is available on the lake, including Northerns and sunfish. Since Thomas Lake does not have a public boat access, we do ask that you don’t bring jet skis or motor boats. You're welcome to bring unpowered watercraft like kayaks and canoes.
The main road that goes most of the way around the lake (Thomas Lake Road) is only for local traffic and their visitors. The gravel road is great for bicycling or walking but younger children should still be supervised. Bel Air Road is an offshoot that serves 3 additional properties.
The exterior of the cabin itself has a generous deck with a picnic table and umbrella. The front porch has 2 Adirondack chairs where you can watch the lake, look at the bird feeders and just relax. Next to the deck is a parking area and will accommodate three vehicles. You can have a bonfire in the fire pit part way down towards the lake (subject to local fire watches). A Weber kettle charcoal grill is also available for cookouts.
For the interior of the cabin, it’s IKEA meets North Woods! The living area has a sofa that converts to a double sleeper, and a dining table can seat 6 comfortably, yet folds down to less than a card table on its side. To cool or warm the cabin, there is a ceiling fan that also has a built in heater. An extra oil filled radiator space heater is also available. Everything (including the full sized water heater) is electric- no gas appliances.
The bathroom has a full sized shower and fully functional flush toilet. The kitchen has a divided sink, 4 element range and stove, a countertop height refrigerator, microwave, coffeemaker, crockpot, kitchen/cooking utensils and place settings for 6.
The sleeping loft is ladder accessible, and has 2 twin mattresses- a perfect fort for the kids! No linens, pillows or towels provided.
Pets are OK with prior approval.
The cabin also has a NOAA weather radio and a LCD TV with built in DVD player, but no phone. AT&T cell coverage available (4G).
The nearest retail establishments include Dixie, which is a bar/restaurant/bottle shop located 12 miles back toward Two Harbors. They have a good selection of beer (and some wine and liquor) and have a fabulous fish fry on the weekends. They also sell gasoline, but no groceries. Hugo’s is a local legend cross-roads bar 8 miles west of Thomas Lake. They sell some groceries and have a bar, bottle shop. They serve up frozen pizzas, and they have live music on the weekends. Back in Two Harbors, you can pretty much find anything you need- groceries, hardware, restaurants and many services.
This cabin is a perfect base for day trips anywhere along the North Shore, Iron Range or towards the Boundary Waters. Duluth is only one hour away; Grand Marais is about two hours up the shore with landmarks like Split Rock Lighthouse, Palisade Head and Gooseberry Falls much closer; Ely and the Iron Range are both about 90 minutes away.
We have enjoyed the scenic tranquility of this lake for many years, and we hope to share it with you.

The Thomas Lake Cabin is owned by two couples. Mike and Jody live on Thomas Lake and Keith and Jeri live in St Paul. We are all artists in either the visual or music fields. We would like to invite other artists, writers and musicians to consider this cabin for a retreat to contemplate, revitilize and create.
Keith Lee purchased this cabin in 2011
This place is special to us. Mike and Jody have lived on Thomas Lake for many years. Keith and Jeri have been coming to Thomas Lake nearly as long. Several of the local folks assisted in developing the property. The neighborhood is a wonderful mix of good people with a wide range of world views. Any one of them would help you out in a pinch.
The Thomas Lake Cabin is private and quiet without being totally isolated.
Jan wrote: "This is one of the most charmingly delightful retreats on the planet. Thoreau would be so jealous. Mindful simplicity paired with aesthetic intention. Thank you."
This is a cute, tiny cabin but it's not actually on the lake. There is an easement on a patch of grass across the road that's on the lake itself. For two adults, the ikea fold out couch also was not super comfortable (it's also a little grungy).
My girlfriend and I were looking for an off-the-grid weekend vacay, and Keith's cabin delivered!
The cabin is as presented. Clean and neat. There is no lake view and you are 15- 20 Miles from Two Harbors. Before you pack the whole kitchen be aware that we found dish towels and clothes, bath towels, toilet paper, paper towel, garbage bag etc. Perhaps we were just lucky? It is quiet, humming birds and chipmunks play on the deck and surround you. Bring bug spray- you'll need it!. Great way to try small-house living .
Was a perfect little get away for us, had all the necessities for a nice stay. Good location, and the cabin stayed cool even with no AC. Had a wonderful time! Was everything the pictures offer.
The Cabin was so much fun! It's very small - a small sleeping loft with two twin mattresses on the floor upstairs proved too small for my 6'5" fiance, so he slept on the couch - but clean, wonderfully cared for, and enjoyable. It's obvious that the owners really care about the cabin and ensuring guests have a good time. The main downside was the mosquitoes. They are EVERYWHERE so we weren't able to enjoy sitting outside, but I'm sure it would be lovely to do so at a different time of the year.
A perfect place to be if you're looking for a quiet and secluded getaway spot. The cabin is small and cozy, but it is beautifully decorated and has everything you need. The deck is adorned with adirondack chairs and gives a beautiful view of the lake across the street amongst the trees. Maybe the best place for the avid sportsman, but for a family or couple looking to getaway and enjoy nature, this place is perfect.
The owners are very good about giving you a list of everything you'll need to bring before you leave. Note that you'll likely be out of range of cell coverage -- depending on who you are this may be a pro or con. It's about a 20 min drive out of two harbors.
My fiance and I absolutely loved the cabin and the surrounding area and would love to go back.
