About Laurie Mann Porter
I grew up on the east side of the state of Michigan, but my family used to summer in Holland when I was growing up. As an adult, my husband and I started renting the Pioneer and fell in love with its location and charm. We bought it in February of 2013, and look forward to making many more happy memories there. We have lived in the Wimbledon area of London for more than 20 years.

Fabulous beach cottage directly on the lake
We had a lovely week with family and friends at this wonderful cottage. The lake is just steps from the cottage with no need to climb up/down a dune. The views from the very large screened porch are amazing. Laurie is very welcoming and makes sure your stay is comfortable with plenty of clean linens, paper goods, soap, cleaning supplies, etc. Thre is also a charcoal grill (with charcoal). There are two bedrooms on the lakeside (queen and double) and two towards the back with twins and bunk (you can still here the waves from these rooms too).
Beautiful home with a spectacular setting on Lake Michigan. I will be back again next year!
Beachfront location was perfect!
This beachfront cottage was perfect for our family. We stayed here for a week in August. The beach is very active with lots of families and young children, which was perfect for us. We happened to stay during "Macatawa Days" which is a fun family-oriented weekend with tons of planned activities (a race, sandcastle-building contest, kayak race, beach volleyball, etc). We loved sitting on the front porch watching sunset, going down to the beach to explore the waves, walking along the beach to the lighthouse and pier, etc.
The home has a very cottage-y feel. It's older with no special amenities, and recent upgrades, but it was clean, well maintained, and a location that you literally cannot beat. When there is a nice breeze off the lake, the house can remain cool even on the hot August days. When the wind is still, the house can get pretty hot, so we recommend bringing your own fans.
Overall, our family had a great time! Highly recommended!
We have rented "The Pioneer" for 2 summers and plan to return for more! It is a very easy drive from Chicago. The cottage is quite private, and is located on a semi-secluded section of beach of Lake Michigan (just steps out the front door).
Macatawa Park is a charming, old fashioned vacation area with beautiful, picturesque Victorian cottages, and a huge sandy beach. The cottage faces a classic light house ("Big Red") which has a wonderful fog horn. I loved laying in bed listening to both the big waves (which are great for body surfing), and the eery sounding horn.
The cottage is a step back in time to the 50's and 60's, and has retained a wonderful feel
reminiscent of those periods. This area also allows drives to Saugatauck and Holland which are worth the time. Holland has farmer's' markets on Saturdays and Wednesdays, with fabulous summer produce from the Midwest fruit belt.
It's a great place for families and can accommodate larger numbers with the 4 bedrooms. Bring lots of water and beach toys for the kids! There is a bathroom both upstairs and down, allowing for kids to run back and forth to the beach and through the back door of the kitchen when necessary! There is also a huge screened front porch where we ate our meals, read books, and best of all, watched gorgeous sunsets. Don't miss out on this very special experience!
Perfect setting - peaceful with great sunsets.
The description was fully accurate. The coordination for the rental was effortless. Our family -- ages 4-86 - all enjoyed the ease to and from the beach. .
