Bocatura Preserve Cabin 2 is a 2 bedroom cabin on the Sittee River, see map
About Doug Barber
Saltwater fly fishing was the addiction that brought my family to Hopkins, Belize. Hopkins has a laid back atmosphere and warm, friendly people. We enjoy scuba diving and have wonderful pictures of our experiences.
Doug Barber purchased this Cabin in 2016
Why Doug Barber chose Hopkins
Hopkins was a natural choice for me. The flats are a quick panga ride away and the excellent restaurants in the area . If you are looking for a relaxed, laid back experience, Hopkins fits the bill perfectly. My family enjoys bird and nature watching.. just sit on the porch and soon the world walks or flies by.
What makes this Cabin unique
Bocatura Preserve is perfect for the individual interested in observing nature. The baby hummingbirds, 4'-5' iquana, quash... in the spring a whole tribe (30) emerges from the jungle to eat the Molly apples or bananas when in season, large birds dot the mangroves along the river edge. Small birds search the property for food.

Bocatura is a great location. Our cabin (#2) had everything you could think of. Hopkins is a great town with fantastic oceanfront, very accessible and a fun, fun nightlife. Bocatura is a very good deal. Its biggest weakness is if you are older like us, you either need to rent a car or take cabs because it is a little hard to ride bikes for the brief 2 miles to town unless you are somewhat younger. The atmosphere at Bocatura is great with cool breezes in the evening and beautiful grounds.
Great location if you want an out of town experience
We appreciated the fully stocked kitchen & ammenities very much!
Tranquility in a Beautiful Parklike Setting
My husband and I spent a week at this cabin and had a great time. If you are looking for a peaceful place to relax this is it. It one of the most tranquil place I have ever been. Hopkins is only a couple miles away so you have easy access. I could have spent hours just sitting on the screened porch. The cabins are about 20 feet from the Sittee River in a beautifully manicured 4 acre park like setting. The trees are gigantic, many with orchids and bromeliads clinging to them. There is an abundance of birds. We saw toucans several times.
Doug Barber was very helpful giving excellent advise on several occasions. We enjoyed getting to know Anthony and Juan. They both contribute to making this property a truly unique place.
I would recommend Happy Go Luckie Tours. We went on a snorkeling tour with them, our first time snorkeling and had a great time.
Pleased you enjoyed Bocatura Preserve. It’s is a hidden heaven, birds watchers are thrilled the abundance of wild life. On the ground Anthony and Juan do a terrific job supporting our guests and keeping the grounds up.
Very close to the river, quiet until the jungle wakes you up in the morning.
We were robbed
Our cabin was robbed, the door was kicked in. We reported to the incident to the police. When we mentioned who the onsite caretaker was--someone who was very 'friendly' with us--the police acknowledged that he was well known to them...and was surprised that the owner hired such a person. We have reached out to the owner 3 times since our return home, and he not responded to any of our messages. Another cabin was robbed 2 days before ours. The property and cabin was beautiful, but I would not recommend this property to other guests. The lack of response by the owner to our attempts to contact to tell him about our theft is very concerning. On more than 1 occasion, the onsite manager was smoking majurana in front me, my wife and my kids.
I was at Bocatura about 3 days after the alleged incident. I was prepared for major damage to our glass paneled mahogany French doors given the description sent to me by the guest in an email. What we found was the bottom of the passive French door had a scuff mark where the perp pressed hard with his shoe to dislodge the slide bolt on the back side of the door from the floor. We replaced the slide bolt with a much heavier slide bolt. Each bedroom door has an exterior quality solid brass key in knob lock on it to secure the contents of the bedroom. The keys were in the locks. Each cabin has a keyed security box in the bedroom area. The key was in the unit and the unit functional. Guests have a responsibility to be smart travelers secure their belongings and not carelessly leave valuables in sight.
For 6 years our mechanic provided our walk around evening “security”. He and his family lived in cabin 1. Unfortunately he succumbed to lymphoma cancer late Fall and left a wife and three kids under the age of four. Rather then kick her out we agreed to have her brother join her to keep a roof over her head and walk around Bocatura in the evenings. He has a 2 year old baby with spina bifida. Previous guests in cabin 2 were nurses and they have arranged Spine International Doctors to complete two surgeries on this baby this summer and fall. My point, in talking with this young man you will find a genuinely concerned dad who would do absolutely nothing to separate himself from this little boy and his mom at this perilous time. Other guests have learned the story from this out going young man. These guests seemed totally turned off by a local person of color.
I am readily available by email, but when a guest starts the first email complaint with, “I have consulted our attorney here in Canada and he believes we can sue you for negligence”. The advice we received from our attorney is not to respond. We didn’t.
Be a smart traveler; keep valuables out of sight and when possible under lock and key.

Tropical paradise on the river
For a true Belizian experience this is the perfect getaway! Right on the river with great fishing, resident parrots and toucans and kayaks for true river exploring. For serenity and an adventure off the beaten path, this place is for you!
There are three Bocatura cabins, all are comfortable refurbished cabins sleeping a total of 8 people on the Sittee River. The river flows from the watershed of the Cockscomb Basin to the west. The river area is ideally situated for mangrove growth along the banks and out to the mouth of the river where there are tall, tall black mangroves.
Bocatura Bank is tucked in off the Sittee River road- see VRBO map- it is south of the Village about 3 miles, and 2 mile from Belizian Dream, Hamanasi, and Jaguar Reef Resorts. The area is surrounded by jungle growth, plains grasses, and cane grasses.
Bocatura Bank property is a well maintained 5 acres of trimmed lawn area. It is a paradise for birders.
Bocatura Bank has 4 cabins.
