|Minimum Stay||3 nights|
Self-contained house in a charming, well-appointed canal village. The house features two double bedrooms plus a folding bed. There is unlimited wifi, and a 80cm LCD TV with a basic DVD player. The house is only a 1-2 minute walk to the main square, and has a garden area with table and chairs. The village features a boulengerie, a small but comprehensive grocery store, an excellent restaurant, a bar in the main square, pharmacy, florist, hair-dresser, and a marina on the Canal du Nivernais. Overlooked by the beautiful old church, the village has a railway station, with the line leading to Auxerre and on to Paris. Not too far from larger towns like Avallon & Auxerre, the village makes a great base from which to explore this part of Burgundy.
Check-in and Check-out: Minimum rental is 3 nights. Check-in time is generally 4pm, and the house must be vacated 10am on the day of departure.
Instructions for entry will be made available on receipt of full payment.
We are Australians who wanted to have a property to visit for longer periods when we retire. We couldn't afford anything posh, but we have made sure the house is comfortable and functional.
Narelle or Graeme Bell purchased this house in 2009
The village is lovely, with a good selection of shops and services for its size.
The surrounding area is beautiful, and being rural, is relatively easy to drive around. We get on really well with the neighbours, a couple of whom are happy to speak English. The river and canal are lovely beautiful, with lovely wild flowers in season. Birds and deer roam the forests.
This cottage worked well for our stay for the 4 of us. It was functional with a good bathroom and a layout that worked well for us with one bedroom of the lounge and the other off the dining area. It is situated in a village with a great bakery, a bar and a good restaurant. The surrounding area is beautiful with so much to do - the folder of flyers in the cottage was very helpful in choosing where to go. Would certainly go back again.
We had a lovely stay at this property for 2 weeks in October. The owners had described the property to us as 'comfy and functional but not posh' and that is a good summary! The cottage is pretty basic, but provides an excellent base for exploring the area. The owner communicated really well, always responding promptly and helpfully to any queries. The house was clean. We were warm, dry, safe and comfortable. Great little washing machine, and a lovely shower. The rennovated kitchenette and bathroom were great. The little garden just up the road was excellent for drying washing and for our children to play. We loved the village of Chatel Censoir - very friendly with helpful shop keepers. Highlights for us were various walks along the canal tow path (we wished we had bicycles with us - I think you can hire them in the summer), a visit to the caves at Arcy Sur Cure, the nearby town of Vezelay is well worth a visit, a visit to Auxerre including a boat trip, and the children (aged 8 and 5) loved Cardoland - a must if you have children with even the remotest interest in fossils and dinosaurs. We even managed a day trip to Paris, catching the train from Auxerre. The Morvan park is beautiful - we saw some wonderful birds there, and the visitors centre is excellent - they provided us with an excellent children's nature trail / quiz. Opening times of many attractions are very limited outside of the main summer season but we managed to find enough to do. The autumn colours were beautiful. A good holiday, and a real feel of French life.
The property was situiated in a fantastic little village with a small super market ,bakery ,a pub and a very good restaurant, and every one was very friendly. there is a market every thursday morning get up early! The walks by the canal and river were beautiful and serene. whilst the kitchen was only big enough for one (suited me fine ) the accommodation was roomy enough for the 3 of us. A great power shower and new bathroom clean and very nicely done. Want to go back again NOW! well perhaps next year.
The charming village of Chatel-Censoir sits on the Canal du Nivernais and River Yonne at the northern edge of the Morvan National Park.
The village is small, yet has an excellent selection of local services, including great dining in the village and nearby towns. The Thursday morning markets are a must for local produce, cuisine and much more.
Shops in the village include a small but comprehensively stocked supermarket, a bakery (boulangerie), doctor's surgery (she speaks perfect English), pharmacy, service station with fuel pumps, hairdresser, railway station, marina on the canal, and more. There is a tourist information office, open only in the tourist season.
The house was renovated in 2014, but has been kept faithful to its original style. The floors are mostly beautiful old tiles, and the furniture has a lovely, traditional character. We find the neighbours to be very friendly, so be sure to say Bonjour when they pass by.
We especially recommend fresh croissants, bread and pastries from the boulangerie, or a croque monsieur and a coffee at the café while you watch the world go by. Strolls or bike rides along the canal paths are a must, and drives in the country are quite easy in this rural district. Look out for gems like antique shops, cafes and vineyards. There are numerous churches, abbeys, chateaux, museums and natural attractions in the area.
The larger towns of Avallon and Auxerre are only 26 and 37km away respectively (16 and 23 miles). The regional capital, Dijon, is just over 100km away.
A compendium of activities and attractions has been added to by various guests. Other nearby attractions include: the UNESCO heritage-listed village of Vezelay (15km/9 miles), caves of Arcy sur Cure (18 km/11 miles), Chablis (a great name for wines, 44km/27 miles), St Brisson (musee de resistance - 55km/34 miles), Tonnerre (57km/35 miles), Montbard (TGV station - 68km/42 miles), Abbey de Fontenay (73km/45 miles), Flavigny-sur-Ozerain (location of the film 'Chocolat' - 83km/51 mIles), Source of the Seine (106km/66 miles).
