Steve powell purchased this lodge in 2010
We experience 4 seasons that offer an array of activities all year round. Guest will be in close proximity to skiing, golfing, rafting, tubing, zip-lines, National Forest, orchards, horseback riding, The Biltmore Estate, Western NC Nature Center, Dollywood, Gray Fossil Museum, Christmas tree farms, natural hot springs, gem mining as well as every luxury a city offers; shopping, dining, theaters. The lodges are well planned to allow privacy and safety. There is plenty of driveway parking and there are no steep drops or stilts like most mountain cabins.
The owners, Steve and Joy Powell, live on Memory Mountain and offer tours of their farm to interested guest, however appointments must be made in advance. Their farm features rabbits, range chickens, pheasants, quail, egg gathering, blackberries, raspberries, strawberries, apple/peach/pear trees. Their Antique Museum has the largest arrowhead collection in the Southeast. You may view depression glass, farm equipment and neat historical mountain finds. Arrowhead hunts may also be coordinated with your scheduled visit.
The lodges feature many unique charms such as wormy chestnut logs and wood, arrowheads found on the grounds, nooks for children to explore, private outdoor fire pits and plenty of gathering space indoors and out. A great deal of time has been spent collecting local reclaimed wood to build Memory Mountains' cabins and it shows.
We enjoyed our stay at Waterfall Lodge. The cabin was big enough for everyone in our group and very clean. It was supplied with everything that we needed as if we were at home. Mr. Steve came by one morning with Lobo and the kids really enjoyed that experience. Mr. Steve and Ms.Joy are the kind of host that you would want when renting a place. Everyone in our group enjoyed themselves. It's an awesome cabin!
Our family of 14 (8 Adults, 5 Children, AND FurBaby) booked Waterfall Lodge so that we could enjoy a North Carolina Christmas this year. This is a place, and an experience that did not disappoint. From the time we opened the door to Waterfall Lodge, we instantly felt at home. The home was filled with everything you need to feel "at home", was very clean, and had more than enough room for all of us. Steve greeted us after we had gotten settled in a bit, and gave us some tips on the best ways to get the most out of our trip. He also arranged for us to take the kids to cut down our own Christmas tree! This, in particular, is a memory I will never forget - and him going out of his way to help us get the most out of our stay is the exact thing that will make our family want to keep coming back. We enjoyed cooking out over a fire every day, and enjoyed taking the kids outside for hiking and fishing right outside the front door. A highlight for the kids (ok and adults too) was getting to hang out with Lobo. We had a wonderful Christmas at Waterfall Lodge, and will definitely be back!
We had a wonderful stay at this cabin. It was a huge space for all 9 adults and 6 children to spread out. We really loved not only the cabin but the property (and Lobo). Spending the evenings out by the fire was priceless family time even though it was freezing. The owners were also super awesome too from initial reservation communications to helping get us a crock pot when we needed it. They really made us feel at home. You are only 30 mins from Asheville which was great for a nice day out. Don't hesitate to book this property.
Waterfall Lodge is a great place for a family holiday vacation. The location, just 25 miles north of Asheville, NC, was easy to find and close to many of the areas amenities such as fishing, hiking, zip lining, shopping in Asheville, the Biltmore Estate, and swimming, golf and snow skiing if the season is right.
The property has 5 bedrooms and four large bathrooms. The lower level and mid-level living rooms accommodate large groups well and there are enough separate bedrooms to retreat to if one desires a little privacy. There are three outside decks large enough to use for dining outside or just relaxing and taking in the views or listening to nature. The lower deck has a hot tub and a well maintained grill for cookouts by the fishing pond on the property.
A pond side fire ring and an ample wood supply make for a great place to cook hotdogs and marshmallows for S'mores.
The lodge was clean and well maintained. The interior is very rustic and offers a unique, one of a kind design that Steve Powell and his crew built about 6 to 8 years ago. There is gas heat for the winter months if needed, and the lodge is air conditioned for use in the simmer months again if needed.( lodge is at about 3700 foot elevation)
For Thanksgiving we had 10 adults and 8 little grandkids. We cooked a turkey and all the trimmings in the well equipped kitchen We purchased many of the needed groceries at the fantastic Ingels Market in Mars Hill about 10 miles from the lodge.
Steve Powell and his wife, Joy, manage the property and they checked on us regularly to see if we needed anything. Lobo, their pet wolf, came with Steve on one of his visits and he is a fascinating animal to watch and friendlier than any dogs we have encountered.
We would recommend this property to anyone looking for a relaxing mountain retreat that still has great internet access and a large screen TV with hundreds of channels from the satellite network. Our kids loved the lodge and want to go back in the simmer months. We have already booked the lodge for next August during the week of the full total eclipse.
We were very impressed with our rental, the property owners and our overall stay. The house had enough room for everyone to have their own bed and space so we didn't feel like we were all on top of each other. The common areas were roomy and accommodating for smaller groups to break away or for the whole group to gather at once. The views from all of the rooms were phenomenal. Steve was very friendly and helpful before and during our trip. All of my questions and concerns were answered and resolved in a timely and effective way. There were plenty of supplies to meet our needs from toilet paper to soap to dishes. We brought some things but most of the basics were provided. Beds were super comfortable. The decorations and style of the house were also very nice. Views of the pond and waterfall were beautiful and we enjoyed sitting on the window seat and on the porches to enjoy. We are looking forward to planning another trip very soon.
