Area Info:

Kalkan is a beautiful and sophisticated bougainvillea-covered harbour village, set in a breathtaking landscape on the Turquoise Mediterranean coast of Turkey. There is simply no other town quite like Kalkan along Turkey's coast. Kalkan curls snugly around an ancient harbour sheltered at the foot of the towering Taurus Mountains

The town overlooks a beautiful bay in which islands seem to magically float upon the shimmering sea. Narrow streets twist down to the harbour through the historic town and are lined with listed whitewashed villas with shuttered windows situated alongside small local specialty shops and restaurants. Overhead hang original ornately carved Ottoman timber balconies garlanded with brilliantly coloured bougainvillea cascading to the streets below. It is a very special place.

Winding cobbled streets, colourful shops and excellent harbour-side and roof terrace restaurants and bars are combined with stunning views – whether you are looking up to the dramatic mountains behind the village, or down across the harbour to the broad sweep of the Mediterranean.

Not only is Kalkan beautiful, but unlike other Turkish coastal resort towns Kalkan's main economy is tourism and therefore its citizens put much pride and effort into the town's historic preservation. Because of this Kalkan has retained the texture of its history with its distinctive Greek architecture (it was once a Greek and Turkish fishing village). Very strict building codes keep the town small and architecturally blended with the historic heart of the town known as 'Old Kalkan'.

Besides the famous 'Kalkan Style' historic architecture, the many excellent restaurants of Kalkan contribute to the special atmosphere of the resort. Good dining has always been the way of life in Kalkan. In fact, Kalkan is said to have the highest number of restaurants and bars per inhabitant or square metre on the Turkish coast. Additionally, Kalkan is especially renowned for its numerous roof-top terrace restaurants and bars which offer a wonderful view of the town, sea and stars. You can also sit at one of the many fine harbour-side restaurants and watch the fishermen leave early in the morning as you tuck in your breakfast, or see them return with the day's catch in the evening.

The people of Kalkan happily welcome you, and you may at first be surprised by the universal friendliness within the town. It is absolutely genuine. Warm Turkish hospitality and friendliness is the basis of life here and the people of Kalkan sincerely enjoy getting to know their guests. So do not hesitate to accept one of the many tulip-shaped glasses of 'cay' (tea) you will be offered while you amble along Kalkan's winding streets.

You will not be hassled while you are a guest of Kalkan - the town is hassle free and is proud to be so. You will find a mixed population here, consisting mainly of locals, some Istanbul Turks who own businesses, as well as a small number of well-educated foreigners who have settled in the town.

Kalkan is a truly wonderful holiday destination.

Kalkan by day is fun. The town center of Kalkan becomes surprisingly empty during the day as guests set off for daytime activities. Popular activities include beach-going, relaxing at one of the beach clubs or swimming pools, water sports, exploring the ancient lands around Kalkan and boat and gullet trips. Don’t forget to stop by Kalkan’s Thursday Market to pick up some great bargains and see local life.

Saklikent (Hidden City) Gorge is the second-largest (20 km-long) gorge in Europe, the longest and deepest gorge in Turkey, about a 40 minutes' drive from Fethiye. It is a spectacular place, with sculpted walls soaring high above. Four km. of the gorge is walkable after April when most of the snow from the Taurus Mountains has melted and passed through the gorge on its way to the Xanthos River. Summer is the best time to visit as the canyon is deliciously cool and shady with cold water.

Patara Beach is one of the largest and most beautiful beaches near the ancient Lycian city of Patara in Turkey, on the coast of the Turkish Riviera.

The 18 kilometres (11 mi)-long Patara Beach is the longest in its region and sometimes reaches a width of 200–300 metres. The beach has soft sand and shallow sea. It is one of the places that sea turtles leave their eggs. Because of this, the beach is under protection. At its easternmost point there is a rocky outcrop looking over a spectacular rocky cove. The single road approach to the beach features ancient sites of archaeological interest.

The beach is situated at a distance of 20 km from Kaş and 7 from Kalkan, at a point where an extremely narrow valley towered by steep cliffs and forests joins the sea shore in the cove of the same name as the beach (Kaputaş). The beach is quite popular among visitors to the region due to its untouched natural beauty commanded by a view from the heights traversed by the State road D400 between Kaş and Kalkan. The beach is reached by 170 steps descending from the road. A limited number of parking paces are available at the street side. The beach is guarded by the municipality of Kalkan. It is also a favourite stopover for yachts along the Blue Cruise. The sea gets deep rather close to the beach in Kaputaş.

A deep narrow canyon is located on the other side of the street. It can be reached directly from the beach under the bridge, if no flowing water is present. The canyon has been formed from the abrasion of the rocks by flowing waters over thousands of years. The canyon ends after about 200 meters and offers spectacular views to the steep walls. Entrance is free of charge.

About Jayne Kennedy

As friends of 30+ years we headed to Ovacik in Sept 2016 for a week, sharing a villa. Lazing by the pool we touched on the dream of owning 'a place in the sun '. Our villa manager Noel Kennedy informed us our villa was actually for sale and offered to show us other properties for sale close by. So as a bit of a 'jolly' next morning we set off. During our day he mentioned 'Kalkan' and a duplex for sale and as we'd never heard of the place offered to take us there next evening for dinner with him and his lovely wife Jayne.

I think as soon as we round the corner on the D400 and set our eyes on Kalkan bay we were already a little in love and after viewing the duplex and spending the evening in one of Kalkan's amazing bars and restaurant we were hooked.....3 days later we shook hands on the deal.

Jayne Kennedy purchased this apartment in 2016

Why Jayne Kennedy chose Kalkan

Back home we questioned our sanity and 3 weeks later 2 of us flew back to Kalkan to spend more time there and view other properties. By the end of the week we knew Kalkan was the place and dalora was the apartment for us.

What makes this apartment unique

From it's spacious, bright interior to the abundance of outside space, 3 terraces and a garden, and the added luxury of our own large, private infinity pool all with magnificent views of Kalkan bay. We had a slight concern as we weren't in the centre of town but have quickly realised that we have the benefit of being away from the noise whilst a mere 10 minute walk to all Kalkan has to offer, and a walk which has the view of the bay is more a pleasure than a chore and a cab home is a mere £2 so we feel we have the best of both worlds. We have tried to make dalora everything we would look for on our holiday and on our last visit actually sat on the terrace at breakfast and said it felt like home, we hope this is how our guests will feel throughout their stay and know that from our time in Kalkan you arrive as a visitor and leave as a friend.

The added benefit is also knowing Noel and Jayne Kennedy are just a call / text away if our guests need any help during their say.

Fantastic holiday in fantastic villa

  • 5 of 5

Spent a relaxing 10 days in this well equipped villa which has been furnished to a high standard. Comfy sunloungers and plenty of outdoor seating. Situated a 10-15 min walk to the restaurants, bars and shopping in Kalkan. A cheap taxi back ensured a good evening was had by all. The villa was exceptionally clean and well-maintained. We would definitely recommend this villa to anyone wanting to stay in the beautiful Kalkan area and would not hesitate in returning there ourselves - hopefully in the not too distant future.

Amazing Apartment

  • 5 of 5

What a fabulous apartment, superb in every way, the owners have thought of everything to make your holiday home from home. The decor is exceptional, the apartment has the feel of a villa as it is so spacious and having the added benefit of its own swimming pool and fantastic views. Away from the hustle and bustle of town, yet only a 10 minute stroll to the many superb restaurant and bars Kalkan has to offer. A taxi home is only a mere 10 tl.

Would recommend Dalora to Kalkan lovers and I will definately be back.

A Kalkan gem, perfect for a relaxing break

  • 5 of 5

We had an absolutely fantastic stay at Dalora Apartment. The apartment was spotlessly clean in a fantastic location with a great sized swimming pool. The areas around the pool offered ample space for relaxing in the beautiful Kalkan sun, plenty of shady areas too and a great seating area beyond the pool which we spent many an evening watching the sunset with a glass of chilled Turkish Wine. The owners had provided a really comprehensive welcome book with lots of thoughtful and fantastic tips and ideas of things to do whilst you were there (if you could tear yourself away from the apartment that is!). The apartment itself is beautifully decorated and is extremely comfortable, having everything you need to make your stay perfect. There were also great contacts given for a wonderful local food/drink delivery service which is brilliant.

The location is great, close to town and local supermarkets. As with anywhere in Kalkan the hills are quite steep getting back from town on a hot day but it's just a few minutes in a taxi and the prices are so reasonable it really makes sense just to hop in a cab. I can't recommend this place highly enough - in fact I have already booked to go back next year!

Dalora was a delight!!!!!

  • 5 of 5

Don't usually do reviews, unless it's to moan, but spent a week here ......and was nowhere near long enough!!!!

Fabulous gaffe, felt like a lottery winner. Top class decor, pool was a cracker bigger than I expected and great views , everything in there we needed including washer and iron for the missus!!! Home from home😉😉

Was proper surprised with amount of room we had, nice big lounge/ diner but outside went on forever, terrace for sunbathing, bit for shade, nice sofa areas for the evening beverage 🍺🍺 and even a nice little garden if you're Tom Jones and missing the old green, green grass.

We had friends round for the obligatory BBQ and even had room for a bit of a boogie.

OK so downside, it's a 10 minute walk into town, and that's a pint missed......however it is downhill if you've ever dined out in kalkan you'll know it's probably well needed and we met some great cabbies on the way back!

Kalkan as always didn't disappoint, lovely people, great food, tons of bars and a treat to the eyes.

So will I go back.....to Kalkan ? Every year.

To dalora.......already booked!!!!!

In love with this place!

  • 5 of 5

We arrived at Dalora after a 90min transfer arranged by dalora owners.

Upon arrival we found dalora exceeded all our expectations, the rooms were decorated beautifully and you could see the furniture and kitchen items were all brand new. Everything you could need for your stay had been thought of down to hairdryers, beach towels and even a speaker for by the pool....which by the way was fabulous with amazing views of the bay.

The owners had left a welcome pack of essential items and all the details on local knowledge.

The old town is a 10 minute walk down the bottom of the hill. It makes a lovely evening stroll as you can enjoy the views of the mountains and the sea on route. There is a massive choice of restaurants and bars to go to and lots of little shops to look around. We would have dinner and then wander around the harbour stopping for a drink or two on route.

There is lots of amenities in Kalkan. You can whatsapp your shopping list to the supermarket and a moped or car delivers it 20 minutes later! 👌?🏼? We fancied a night in one night so we got a kebab from the takeaway down the road! They gave massive portions, was so tasty and cheap!! Then drinks on the terrace overlooking the lights of kalkan town. There was also a BBQ on the terrace and we got some meat from a lovely butchers in town.

Whilst we were there we visited the Turkish baths and went on a boat trip. All really reasonable and easy to arrange we actually walked down to harbour and organised a private one for ourselves with a delicious lunch included.

There was 6 (3 couples) of us in our party and we all can't wait to return to Kalkan! it's such a beautiful place and when we do we will definitely be staying in dalora, it's a wonderful duplex.
