The Village "A little history"
Alsas is the old name of Montpezat. It was an act of Saint Gilles's bullaire that revealed the identity of the town Alsatis from the charter of 9941 and the village of Montpezat. The importance of the castle of Montpezat, castrum MontisPesati quoted in the bubble of 1156 of Pope Adrien IV2, as belonging to the bishop of Nîmes, replaced at that time the primitive name Sanctus-Sebastianus of Alsatis which was in it bullaire9. In the XIIth century, the village was a fortified town occupying a strategic position on the first foothills of the Cévennes. His warrior style marks strongly the landscape.
Montpezat, as many villages of this area had its share of misfortunes. During the religious wars, by 1570, the Protestants of neighborhood, were attacked by the marshal of Damville, and then there were taken refuge within the castle, but unfortunately a final assault had had and all the men were killed there.
Church called Saint Sébastien on which a stone arrow of Gothic style is put on top of bell tower.
According to the book «Saint’s Sébastien parish» of Raoul Jourdan (local writer), this church of the XIIth century was destroyed by the Huguenots of Montpezat whose feudal lord was Jean Tremolet, who was supported their objectives.
In 1573, the taking of the fortress meant to the return the Catholicism which was practised from then on by all the Lords.
However, there were only eighty or hundred houses in the village, didn’t t want to change their religion. They were remained Huguenot.
They had not church and they decided to do the religious service outside, it was difficult because they were exposed to the wind and in the rain. In 1663, the feudal lords built a chapel in the castle and the worship was practised until the reconstruction of the church in 1686.
A new presbytery was built on the ruins of the former in 1695. After Revocation of the Edict of Nantes in 1685, the chaplain of the castle received abjurations from locals Huguenots, who were far more sincere for their return in the Catholicism than others. This is explained by their attachment to their Lords. Furthermore, it was noticed that it was the same case for majority of villages with castle. Indeed, villages where there had not castle, the number of Protestants was on the rise. In 1771, the feudal lords built a small chapel near to the church, which sheltered the family vault. During in Revolution in 1790, and in despite of the resistance of the population against persecutions, the church had became the Temple of the Reason, as well as the presbyter had been the communal house.
A large part of locals who remained faithful to religion practiced worship in the Mas de Giraud. Since 1849, the relics of San Sebastian were saved such as this one received from Rome through the priest of Quissac. The picture of the Saint of the painter Melchior Doz, it was a gift from the Baron de Vignet. The deep changes had brought to the ritual under Pope John XXIII in 1962 led to an an adapted implementation: abolition of the benches of communion, removal of the pulpit, statues, chandeliers and candelabra.
On the other hand, the marquis's bench, the Pieta to the deaths of the war 14-18, the confessional, the chapel and the altar of the Virgin were remained. At the same time, the paintings had been restored "to the old", with motifs of lily flowers!
It was mentioned in 994 and 1119. The castle was sold to Saint-Louis in 1269 by the bishop of Nîmes. According to the tradition, king lived there. In 1521, it was sold to Pierre Trémolet, doctor of François Ier. In 1569, the Protestants took over it. In 1789, it was set on fire but the fire was switched off by locals of the village. Staircases were broken and the plundered apartments. Before 1789, the building represented a quadrilateral closed in the South by a gallery or a wall forming a terrace .The chapel was on the terrace, attached to the tower. The castle has preserved three main buildings surrounding a cour ton three sides. The north wing is drilled, on the court by two wide arcades full center and of a small door of the 15th century for the ground floor; on the first floor, it is drilled by two wide berries and mullion
The east wing ends in a large square tower, partly ruined but whose crossed berries and mullions still exist. It has, on the level of the floor, a gallery in corbelling. The west wing ends to the south by an important round tower, flanked by a turret of polygonal staircase, carried by a trunk.
