About the property

Quiet,woodsy private retreat near hiking,swimming, fishing,restaurants,shopping.

Centrally located on Mount Desert Island is "Tall Pines". Tucked away, down a private drive on Pretty Pond in Historic Somesville on a 3 1/2 acre wooded and grass lot, is our spacious 1200 square foot downstairs one bedroom suite with a full kitchen and living area, full size washer/dryer with 2 private entrances and large deck; facing over 1/2 mile of uninhabited woods and wildlife wetland that used to be part of Acadia National Park. It is very, very private and you won`t see a soul from your front deck or windows. Your downstairs Suite features a large stone fireplace, with wood stove and leather sofa, wood beamed ceilings, and a 280 square foot Country kitchen. It also has a separate TV area with a comfy sectional sofa.

Relax on the spacious 28 ft. deck with stunning unobstructed view of the Duck pond and Ripple Pond?Creek with rolling wooded hills, a beaver hut and multiple wildlife including bald eagles, deer, egrets, falcons, hawks, ducks, beaver, frogs, loons, wild turkeys, geese and even the occasional sea otter. Sit by the fire pit after a long day of hiking Acadia National Park; (which offers over 100 miles of nature trails with breath taking views), or after touring one of the many quaint towns on Mount Desert Island.

Our location is just 10 minutes to Southwest Harbor and 15 minutes to Bar Harbor, the popular tourist destination on the edge of the sea with many quaint shops and restaurants to explore. Smell the crisp, clean sea air of the Atlantic Ocean at Sea Wall with a picnic lunch about 20 minutes away. Visit one of the Local Craft Fairs or Farmers Markets in multiple places on the island. It's only a short 9 minute walk to Long Pond where you can swim and stand up paddle or rent a kayak or canoe and paddle to Rum Island. Also within walking distance is Somes-Meynell Wildlife Sanctuary on Somes Pond where you can drop in your kayak or take a mile-long nature hike. On a warm day, you can take a swim at nearby Echo Lake only 5 minutes away. Enjoy the Town Dock on the Atlantic Ocean in Somesville just a few minutes away. Also past the Pond`s End dock at Long Pond is Pretty Marsh Picnic area along the ocean's edge about 2 miles away.

Another great attraction is the carriage roads all around Acadia National park designed for bikes and in the winter time, cross country skiing and snow shoeing... only 10 minutes away.

BBQ on the deck or steam up some fresh Maine lobsters to enjoy indoors or out on one of our 2 large dining tables. Enjoy 52 inch screen tv or relax by the wood stove and read a book or magazine. You could also take in a play at the Acadia Repertory Theatre in nearby historic Somesville town or sit alongside Somes Sound by the Historic Somesville Bridge and Library where the resident Bald Eagle resides and watch various types of boats go by.

And of course, ACADIA NATIONAL PARK is all around you including over 120 miles of hiking and biking trails with lakes and ocean for swimming, fishing and boating.

About Greg

I grew up in CA as a youth and always loved Yosemite and National Parks. Acadia National Park has always been one of my favorites. I have family roots in Maine, my Grandfather-Great Grandfather were both wooden boat builders in Southwest Harbor.

Greg purchased this house in 2017

Why Greg chose Mount Desert

I've been coming to Maine for years since I was a boy in Scout Camp. My Mother was raised in Southwest Harbor and is a Pemetic High School Alumni. It has always been a special place to me and I'd like to share it's beauty and charm with others.

What makes this house unique

Solitude, serenity, relaxation and the quality of life. Tall Pines is close to all the happenings on Mount Desert Island while still being very private and quiet. You can slow down and unwind from the everyday hustle and stresses of life while enjoying the nature views right out your window.

Located within minutes of Acadia, Southwest, Northeast and Bar Harbors this is the place to be on MDI. Unit is large, comfortable with a great deck overlooking pond and forest. Very nice place to stay.

Great view!

  • 5 of 5

Convenient location - close to everything on the island but it stays quiet. Hosts are very nice and the homeaway is spacious and well-equipped. The view is simply amazing and can be enjoyed from their deck or even inside. Can't wait to come back!

A beautiful cozy stay

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I decided to have a cozy getaway for Christmas, and found the right place! The woodstove was so lovely to sit by, the kitchen was fully-equipped to cook many meals, and the couches were so comfy. Lots of space and lots of quiet. The view from the sliding doors/porch was beautiful and serene, and we loved being so close to everything to go on snowshoeing adventures in Acadia. Thank you, Greg and Kassy, for thinking of every detail to make our stay so relaxing and renewing!

Tall Pines in Somesville, Mt. Dessert Island, Maine

  • 4 of 5

Greg and Kassy were very easy to work with. The home was very clean, spacious for two people and very comfortable. We were very happy with everything. The bathroom was very small and there is not a photo of the bathroom so we did not know what to expect, but it was ok for the 6 days we stayed there. The kitchen was equipped enough for our limited cooking that we did there. Everything worked well and it was very nice having the clothes washing machine and dryer to wash our clothing in the middle of our two weeks of travel. The view was beautiful overlooking the pond. The property is very quiet and peaceful. We had no trouble finding the property. FYI-We did not know that the Mt. Desert Island Annual Marathon (10-15-17) would be held on one of our vacation days there and we were very disappointed to learn that we would basically not have use of the island that day because so many roads were shut down for this large race. You might want to work your trip around this annual event as it brings in a large number of people. Also this is the finished basement of a home that the owners live in above; the owners have only lived in Maine 4 months, so they were not able to give us advice on where to eat, hike, sight see, etc... but they were very accomodating. The home is as photographed and no surprises. We highly recommend Tall Pines!

Simply perfect!

  • 5 of 5

Everything as promised. Greg was a gracious host. Property was easy to find with clear directions. Close to everything you would want or need. This will be a keeper in our travel books. We absolutely will return and have already provided the information to three families that are considering a visit to Acadia NP area.

Thanks Greg and Kassy - can't wait to come back!!!!

We have stayed at many vacation homes and this was by far our favorite!

  • 5 of 5

As we drove up to " Tall Pines", we knew we were in for a treat because of the location and serenity of this beautiful home. Greg and Kassy's place is so warm and inviting. It was so relaxing spending the evenings there after a busy day exploring. Their home is not only spacious with anything and everything you need to feel right at home but is also so clean and comfortable. We were within a few minutes to wherever we wanted to go for the day and they were so helpful with any questions we had about the area. If we ever visit Maine again, we will definitely stay at "Tall Pines" again. It's the best! Thanks for sharing your home with us Greg and Kassy!
