The neighbourhood of Campo de Ourique
It's easy to navigate the grid pattern of Campo de Ourique's streets in the heart of Lisbon, accessed by nearby highways and on several bus routes. This residential neighborhood has been a trade center for centuries, yet it's a peaceful district. Commercial diversity mixes some of the most respected traditional shops with newer, modern brands. Almost a city within the city, this neighborhood is famed for small, personal shops. Highlights include the Campo de Ourique market, the bakery Panificação Mecânica and the textile store Vidal Tecidos while welcome new additions include Padaria Portuguesa bakery, Lost In restaurant and BRIO biological market. Decoraters and designers flock here to shop. The pace is as fast on week days as on week ends. Families stroll along inviting streets, children play in the many gardens and ladies head to Mass dressed to perfection. Residents pridefully care for their homes and visitors want to linger.
What was once farmland was turned into a residential neighborhood in 1879, designed with a grid of streets. Today, it’s a mix of beautiful late-19th-century buildings, Art Nouveau, and less attractive architecture from the 20th century. It’s known as a pleasant neighborhood to live in, holding on to traditional shopping and its old market. It has few tourist attractions, but many tourists go past it on the way to tram 28’s last stop. It’s found between the neighborhoods of Estrela and Amoreiras, the first one known for its monumental basilica, and the second for controversial post-modern towers housing the city’s first major shopping mall. More or less at the center is a small park, the Jardim da Parada, which invites locals of all ages.
