Overview

About the property

A large three bedroom house, 200 metres from the sea, in the Enterprise area

Driftwood is a pretty 3 bedroom Barbadian house, built in a colonial style and surrounded by a very lovely tropical garden with fruit trees including a huge mango tree which is visited by a family of monkeys each morning! Driftwood is 100yds from Freights bay, known as the best beginners surfing spot on the island. The house is also a few mins walk from Miami beach which are well loved by families as the white coral sands and gentle waves are perfect for swimming. There is also a great old bus on the beach which serves rum punch, soft drinks and delicious local snacks on picnic tables under the shady Casuarina trees. At Driftwood house there are polished wooden floors, a fully fitted kitchen, study/TV room and large living room with a beautiful wrap around veranda overlooking the garden. All the bedrooms are equipped with AC and have overhead ceiling fans and the house is made of a tropical hardwood called Greenheart which keeps the house cool on the hottest days.

There are three double bedrooms and two bathrooms, 1 en-suite. There is also great tv room/study with a sofa bed and chairs for watching movies and tv in the evenings. The kitchen is fully equipped and includes a large American style fridge with a crushed ice and cold water dispenser. At night sipping drinks on the verandah, listening to the tree frogs and looking at tropical garden in the twilight is a great experience and the early morning visit by the mango tree from the visiting family of monkeys is not to be missed!

Note: we also have a very pretty 1 bedroom apartment with its own balcony and separate entrance which can be rented at the same time. Please ask for details.

About Dagny Bain

We are an English family originally from Barbados who have lived for many years in Portugal. We have two young sons who love returning to Barbados to surf, swim and spend time relaxing with friends and family. We like helping to make our visitors feel comfortable and at home, so we have a wonderful manager called Margaret, a Barbadian who has been in the tourist business for over thirty years who welcomes our guests to the house and makes sure they have everything they need for a fabulous holiday. She is a font of knowledge for the best places to swim and sightsee and tips on where to find great food and nightlife locally.

We take great pride in making sure that Driftwood is properly equipped and well managed so that our guests have a fabulous, stress free beach holiday and want to return over and over again.

Dagny Bain purchased this house in 2010

Why Dagny Bain chose Enterprise

Driftwood house is in a lovely unspoilt part of Barbados, close to the sea but in a quiet and safe residential area on the South coast. Dagny (wife and mother) grew up in Barbados and knows the island well - searching for the right property took some time but we knew as soon as we saw the house it was exactly what we were looking for - big enough for visiting members of family yet cosy enough as a romantic getaway for couples. Its close enough to the beach for children to walk there by themselves and the surfing spot at the bottom of the road in Freights bay keeps teenagers and young people happy for many hours.

What makes this house unique

A visiting family of monkeys comes for breakfast early most mornings, they sit on the stepping stones in the garden under the mango tree, to eat the bananas that hopefully you´ve left for them the night before...

The house is just 100yds from the sea and a short walk into Oistins town alongside the beautiful turquoise blue Caribbean sea

Guestbook comments from the owner

`Driftwood is one of the prettiest houses we´ve rented in Barbados, it is stylish and comfortable and we felt completely at home sitting on the verandah in the evenings. The garden with the huge mango tree is wonderful. A real gem.´

Tropical paradise

  • 5 of 5

We loved Margaret, the house, the environment and the island. We felt very welcome, and everything was fine. We had a swim each morning at the end of the street, and sat on the porch every evening. Already planning to come back!

Could have been better

  • 3 of 5

The house is pretty and nicely accessorized, however, some of the furniture, linens and pillows were worn out. We were given free AC (in 1 bedroom) after reporting upon arrival that fans in 2 bedrooms were not working, (it was HOT that day). The dishwasher was also broken and Margaret did offer to get a cleaning person to come do dishes, but we declined. She also brought a bottle of wined for this second inconvenience. However, if someone was on top of the property; this would never happen.

The mattress in the upstairs bedroom has seen better days; it was lumpy and one could feel the springs. Mattresses in bedrooms downstairs were hard.

We did manage to lock ourselves out of the house one night at around 8:30 pm; we called the manager for assistance, but never got a reply back that night. We figured out a way to get in.

It was concerning that we were told not to sit out on the porch after 8pm as some prior guests were harassed by some local people. We loved sitting outside on the porch, so I apologize but we did not adhere to this rule. We had no issues.

I would have gladly brought my own shower soap if I had been told that these would not be provided.

If all these incidents did not occur, the stay would have ben perfect as these issues are really addressable.

Owner's Response: We were amazed to read this review. Margaret constantly attended these guests and was happy to help them with their many requests. All the bedrooms have extra fans as well as ceiling fans (just in case...) and when required the request for AC is quickly met. The master bedroom mattress is brand new and firm as are the single beds. The most worrying and confusing complaint is about the linen. The white bed linen and towels are spotless due to the care of the wonderful Denise, Driftwood's immaculate cleaner - however after the guest departure Margaret found one towel with a loose seam and we apologise for this. We don't supply personal toiletries but always have hand soap, washing up liquid, cleaning products etc. We are not sure who told the guests not to sit out at night - as you can see from the other reviews the veranda is loved by all and many happy evenings have been spent there. Hopefully new visitors to the site will read all our other happy reviews from guests and returnees for a more balanced view.

Absolutely fabulous!

  • 5 of 5

This is a lovely home, it feels like a spa retreat! We picked up fresh fish at Oistins brought it back to the house to barbecue in the outstanding backyard. It also has a big comfortable and wonderful covered porch. It is a 10 minute walk to Miami Beach, one of the best beaches in Barbados. Very kid friendly, had our 2 year old twins with us and it was safe and perfect for them to run around everywhere in the house and outdoors. The hospitality and communications with Margaret who manages this house was outstanding. She is kind and very helpful with all our questions!

Amazing Barbados Vacation!

  • 5 of 5

Driftwood is a wonderful, spacious, and convenient place to stay. Our party, consisting of 4 adults and 3 children, enjoyed a week vacation on the property and absolutely loved it. It was clean, tastefully decorated and comfortable. The wrap-around porch offered lovely breezes and great seating - every night we found ourselves reading books on the cushy seats with our feet up or playing games at the table in the corner. The owner was right - we didn't need the A/C -breezes and fans made both the day and night quite comfortable. We walked or drove to Enterprise (Miami) Beach every day, taking advantage of the close proximity of the house to the beach. The outdoor shower was handy for rinsing off the sand from the beach and the yard/garden were also a nice bonus. The home phone for local calls, dishwasher, and laundry machines all contributed to an easy transition from home to vacation. Owner Dagny and property manager Margaret were both helpful, friendly, and easy to reach. This was our second time in Barbados and we would definitely stay here again.

Beautiful place, gorgeous weather

  • 5 of 5

Our family of three adults and two kids spent one week vacation at Driftwood house in January 2017.

The house is 10 min from airport, taxi is $20 USD.

It is two level house with plenty of space equipped with TV, library, games, kitchen appliances. The first floor is surrounded by nice roomy terrace with dining table and sofas. The terrace ends up with porch to backyard with a grill and another table. Three times we noticed a monkey walking in the backyard!

Miami beach is in a distance of ten minute walk. The water is crystal clear, pleasant for swimming and snorkeling. Trees on the beach create plenty of shadow to hide from sunbeams.

We enjoyed the weather, the temperature range was between 82 and 75 Fahrenheit (28-24 Celsius) and low humidity, it was absolutely gorgeous.

Regarding the food, we would recommend Surfer's Cafe in Oistins. Several times we made barbecue from fresh fish which available at fish market every afternoon, also you could buy any food at local supermarket.

It's been one of the best vacation in Caribbean we ever had. Highly recommend this place.

Driftwood is in a quiet, road, on the coast called Enterprise 100yds from Freights bay, known as the best beginner surfing spot in Barbados. Miami beach which is loved by families is just a few mins walk along the coast. The peaceful walk has spectacular views of the turquoise blue Caribbean sea. A two to three minute drive by car or a short walk takes you to the lovely little fishing town Oistins, where fresh fish markets, supermarkets, bars and souvenir shops are located. On Friday night Oistins has a great `fish fry´ which is loved by tourists and local alike, with some of the best food on the island - not to be missed! The popular, St Lawrence Gap is also close by with its lively night life and numerous excellent restaurants. Grantly Adams International Airport is 10 drive minutes away.
