About the property

Newly Renovated Historic Adobe

This hidden jewel only a block from Taos Plaza is part of a historical hacienda style adobe that once housed nuns working at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church. Newly and tastefully renovated, the interior was designed with comfort and convenience in mind, and it features high ceilings, a well appointed kitchen, oak floors, a kiva fireplace, and a cozy living area. An old apple tree and a plum tree stand in a small, grassy courtyard that feels almost Mediterranean in it's serenity. It is located on a quiet one-way street only one block west of the Taos plaza.

Gas range and a large collection of cooking supplies. French door refrigerator, microwave. Full size washer and dryer, heated bathroom floor, a gas heating stove and a kiva fireplace. Electric baseboard heater in bedroom, ceiling fans. Premium linens and a down comforter and pillows; a comfortable plush/firm Queen mattress. Full sleeper sofa with memory foam topped mattress. High speed internet, HDTV, DirecTV, Blue Ray/DVD player, surround sound entertainment system, NetFlix streaming, Pandora/Spotify/Apple Airplay ready stereo system. Small wall safe.

The location of the apartment is one of it's greatest assets. From the front door, a five minute walk will reach twelve restaurants, dozens of galleries, the best coffee in town (The World Cup), Shree Yoga Studio, Smith's grocery store, the Bent Street shopping district, Ledoux Street, and of course, the Taos Plaza.

If you have a large group, you may consider also renting my other property in the same building, Best Casa: Another Gem next to the plaza.

About Marcus Best

I'm the luckiest guy I know. I'm truly thankful to be a part of this beautiful community and also be able to travel often and far. I've been welcomed into people's homes all over the world, and though I've been fairly nomadic most of my life, now for the first time I have my own place, which I have renovated and am offering as a getaway for fellow travelers to enjoy.

I grew up in Snyder, Texas, surrounded by pump jacks and fields of cotton. In the summers when I was a kid, my family would pile into the Good Times van and hit the road for weeks, escaping the 110 degree West Texas heat: Vermont, Florida, Wyoming, northern California, and all in between. When I was fourteen I spent a summer in Germany on an exchange program, and since then I've been hooked on travel. I studied biology writing in college and after graduating worked for the Fish & Wildlife Department in Alaska for a summer. I then worked in Nicaragua as a carpenter for over a year and slowly made my way to Taos, New Mexico, where I've lived for almost thirteen years.

My most recent journey was a 16-month solo motorcycle trip around the world and to the bottom of Africa.

Taos has a lot to offer for a lover of the outdoors like myself. I spend a lot of time in the nearby mountains, skiing, hiking with my dogs, fishing, biking, and motorcycling. I've always enjoyed many sports, and I regularly play soccer, tennis, basketball, and volleyball.

Why Marcus Best chose New Mexico

I've always been somewhat of a nomad, but I've found my home base in Taos. I try to live simply and wanted a small but comfortable place in town, but I've never been attracted to typical condominiums. I wanted character and history, something with personality that I could make my own. I knew when I first saw it that this property was exactly what I had been looking for.

What makes this apartment unique

The location of Best Casa is remarkable. It is just far enough from the main roads that you can't tell your in the heart of Taos, but so close to the center that just about everything you need is within walking distance. The apartment itself has an old-world feel, with double adobe walls and classic mid-century windows. I've always thought of the kitchen as the heart of any home, and this kitchen is the focal point of the apartment; designed with simplicity and functionality in mind. Though the apartment still has a historic feel, it also features high-tech comforts that you won't find in most Taos adobes. You can access and control your music wirelessly through the entertainment system or send movies or videos from your portable device to the HDTV. The tile floor of the bathroom is heated (very nice for bare feet in the morning), and there's even a heated mirror that won't fog up after you take a shower.

When I completed the renovation, which took five months, I was very satisfied with the result, but I didn't truly fall in love with the place until I stayed there myself for a week. Best Casa is truly a hidden gem.

Peaceful Retreat One Block From Plaza

  • 5 of 5

We rented BestCasita for a long weekend. There were four of us and one was in a wheelchair. Marcus was extremely helpful and even measured doorways for us to make sure we had accessibility. He met us at the apartment when we arrived. This is a beautifully renovated apartment in a small complex with a courtyard. The kitchen was well stocked. There was a bottle of wine and breakfast items waiting for us when we arrived. We were able to cook meals without a problem. There were numerous spices, tea and coffee for our use. (There is no dishwasher.) A full sized washer and dryer was available in the pantry. The tenants were very quiet. We rarely saw anyone. Off street parking in the back made it easy. Walking to the plaza was a breeze just one block away. Restaurants, shops and galleries close by. Our first night we ate at Stella's Italian Restaurant. What a treat! Not your typical spaghetti and meatballs. Fine dining at it's best. We also tried Bella's mexican restaurant. The margaritas were from a machine and disappointing, but the food was wonderful. If your up for a little heat, try the stuffed jalapeños as an appetizer filled with chorizo, battered and fried, laying on a bed of delicious guacamole and crema. Both restaurants were a block away. Thank you, Marcus. You are an exceptional host.

Really good location

  • 5 of 5

Really good location The owner was there to meet us. Location was near shops restaurants are within walking distance. The home had many amenities useful for our stay. we were there for skiing. The location to the ski area was just right. It wasn't too far. I would definitely stay here again if I were to go back to Taos.

Best Casa is exceptional!

  • 5 of 5

Perfect location within a few minutes walk of Taos Plaza. Lovely courtyard and so incredibly quiet. Marcus really goes above and beyond to show gracious hospitality to his guests. The house is exceptionally clean and well appointed. Top grade appliances and kitchen accessories. We loved everything about our experience at Best Casa. Marcus is the greatest. We hope to return again and again to Best Casa. First place I have been that I feel no need to look anywhere else for better accommodations.

Modern touches in lovely historic setting

  • 5 of 5

This was our second stay at this apartment. We've been visiting Taos for over 30 years and this is, by far, our favorite spot when it is just the two of us. The location close to the plaza cannot be beat and the apartment itself is delightful. We especially love the heated bathroom floor and the high-end kitchen (it almost makes us regret the excellent restaurant selections that lure us out each night). Recommendations for others: the Saturday Farmers' Market on the plaza, Orlando's New Mexican Café, Cid's Market for groceries and picnic food, and a visit to any part of the Rio Grande del Norte National Monument. Looking forward to return visits!
