This hidden jewel only a block from Taos Plaza is part of a historical hacienda style adobe that once housed nuns working at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church. Newly and tastefully renovated, the interior was designed with comfort and convenience in mind, and it features high ceilings, a well appointed kitchen, oak floors, a kiva fireplace, and a cozy living area. An old apple tree and a plum tree stand in a small, grassy courtyard that feels almost Mediterranean in it's serenity. It is located on a quiet one-way street only one block west of the Taos plaza.
Gas range and a large collection of cooking supplies. French door refrigerator, microwave. Full size washer and dryer, heated bathroom floor, a gas heating stove and a kiva fireplace. Electric baseboard heater in bedroom, ceiling fans. Premium linens and a down comforter and pillows; a comfortable plush/firm Queen mattress. Full sleeper sofa with memory foam topped mattress. High speed internet, HDTV, DirecTV, Blue Ray/DVD player, surround sound entertainment system, NetFlix streaming, Pandora/Spotify/Apple Airplay ready stereo system. Small wall safe.
The location of the apartment is one of it's greatest assets. From the front door, a five minute walk will reach twelve restaurants, dozens of galleries, the best coffee in town (The World Cup), Shree Yoga Studio, Smith's grocery store, the Bent Street shopping district, Ledoux Street, and of course, the Taos Plaza.
If you have a large group, you may consider also renting my other property in the same building, Best Casa: Another Gem next to the plaza.
I'm the luckiest guy I know. I'm truly thankful to be a part of this beautiful community and also be able to travel often and far. I've been welcomed into people's homes all over the world, and though I've been fairly nomadic most of my life, now for the first time I have my own place, which I have renovated and am offering as a getaway for fellow travelers to enjoy.
I grew up in Snyder, Texas, surrounded by pump jacks and fields of cotton. In the summers when I was a kid, my family would pile into the Good Times van and hit the road for weeks, escaping the 110 degree West Texas heat: Vermont, Florida, Wyoming, northern California, and all in between. When I was fourteen I spent a summer in Germany on an exchange program, and since then I've been hooked on travel. I studied biology writing in college and after graduating worked for the Fish & Wildlife Department in Alaska for a summer. I then worked in Nicaragua as a carpenter for over a year and slowly made my way to Taos, New Mexico, where I've lived for almost thirteen years.
My most recent journey was a 16-month solo motorcycle trip around the world and to the bottom of Africa.
Taos has a lot to offer for a lover of the outdoors like myself. I spend a lot of time in the nearby mountains, skiing, hiking with my dogs, fishing, biking, and motorcycling. I've always enjoyed many sports, and I regularly play soccer, tennis, basketball, and volleyball.
Marcus Best purchased this apartment in 2012
I've always been somewhat of a nomad, but I've found my home base in Taos. I try to live simply and wanted a small but comfortable place in town, but I've never been attracted to typical condominiums. I wanted character and history, something with personality that I could make my own. I knew when I first saw it that this property was exactly what I had been looking for.
The location of Best Casa is remarkable. It is just far enough from the main roads that you can't tell your in the heart of Taos, but so close to the center that just about everything you need is within walking distance. The apartment itself has an old-world feel, with double adobe walls and classic mid-century windows. I've always thought of the kitchen as the heart of any home, and this kitchen is the focal point of the apartment; designed with simplicity and functionality in mind. Though the apartment still has a historic feel, it also features high-tech comforts that you won't find in most Taos adobes. You can access and control your music wirelessly through the entertainment system or send movies or videos from your portable device to the HDTV. The tile floor of the bathroom is heated (very nice for bare feet in the morning), and there's even a heated mirror that won't fog up after you take a shower.
When I completed the renovation, which took five months, I was very satisfied with the result, but I didn't truly fall in love with the place until I stayed there myself for a week. Best Casa is truly a hidden gem.
We are 100% in Love with your place! Your attention to detail did not go unnoticed. Thank you for the amazing hospitality and your thoughtful recommendations. . . We hope to se you again next fall!
Perfect location within a few minutes walk of Taos Plaza. Lovely courtyard and so incredibly quiet. Marcus really goes above and beyond to show gracious hospitality to his guests. The house is exceptionally clean and well appointed. Top grade appliances and kitchen accessories. We loved everything about our experience at Best Casa. Marcus is the greatest. We hope to return again and again to Best Casa. First place I have been that I feel no need to look anywhere else for better accommodations.
This was our second stay at this apartment. We've been visiting Taos for over 30 years and this is, by far, our favorite spot when it is just the two of us. The location close to the plaza cannot be beat and the apartment itself is delightful. We especially love the heated bathroom floor and the high-end kitchen (it almost makes us regret the excellent restaurant selections that lure us out each night). Recommendations for others: the Saturday Farmers' Market on the plaza, Orlando's New Mexican Café, Cid's Market for groceries and picnic food, and a visit to any part of the Rio Grande del Norte National Monument. Looking forward to return visits!
Marcus Best Casa was the absolute Best. We drove from Austin and throughly enjoyed our stay. It was clean, updated, welcoming and comfortable. Thank you Marcus, we will be back. Loved it !
As far as my husband and I are concerned, Best Casa and homeowner Marcus Best live up to their name. Our three-day stay at this well-appointed home was better than "the best"; it was exceptional. Upon arrival at the townhome community, Marcus made us feel at home, offered some tips for local hikes and walked us through connecting to Wi-Fi and using the TV and the soundsystem.
The house — a quiet, intimate adobe — afforded us a comfortable home base for our Taos explorations. Marcus' well-composed photos line the walls — a personal touch we appreciated. The kitchen and laundry room have everything you need — high-end appliances and ample room to prepare a meal. We particularly enjoyed the local coffee, granola, yogurt, fruit and wine that Marcus provided.
We couldn't have asked for a better location. Best Casa is a short walk to practically everything you might want to do in the heart of Taos — whether you're a shopper (say hello to the friendly, furry shop dog at Taos Mountain Outfitters), foodie (exceptional burritos and beer at Eske's, and quality coffee at World Cup) or patron of the arts (live music and galleries abound). Major roads are easily accessible from Best Casa, too, making drives to Taos Ski Valley, Taos Mesa Brewery, Rio Grande Gorge Bridge and Carson National Forest simple.
Best Casa's neighbors were friendly and respectful — no noise issues to speak of during our trip. The only sounds we heard were the pleasant church bells at Our Lady of the Guadalupe gently chiming through the screened windows we kept open during our stay (it's a safe community). And when the temps dipped lower in the evening, we loved curling up next to the thermostat-controlled gas fireplace and warming our toes on the bathroom's heated tiles.
We couldn't have asked for a better place. Thank you, Marcus. If we return to Taos, we will insist on staying at Best Casa again.
Lovely condo in a fantastic location. This is our new favorite place to stay in Taos!
This is the perfect place to stay for a visit to Taos. Marcus is a joy to deal with, great communication, took the time to show us everything and share some tips, available for any questions, and someone you'd want to be friends with. The apartment itself is less then 5min walk to the plaza, making it ideal to walk everywhere and leave the car in the provided parking spot. Internet worked very well (for those like us who cannot disconnect:-), the kitchen has everything we possibly needed, the apartment was spotlessly clean and has many charming features, includind a fireplace. The size was perfect for 2 people, and the bed really comfortable.
Looking forward to another visit!
