Second Time Around...
This was my 2nd visit to Carmel by the Sea in 2 years. I cannot overstate how incredible the property is if you are looking to relax and soak in St. John. The breeze from the bay and the wall of windows simply takes my breath away. You are about a 3-mile drive from Cruz Bay, which is easily navigable with a Jeep rental. Ted, the owner, and Jessie, the property manager, are incomparably responsive and considerate, offering to help you with things you haven’t even thought of yet. I highly recommend staying here over any hotels or resort/condos in the area...you won’t be disappointed.

Garden paradise to rest and recharge
Having been to St John for 30+ years and always staying at Caneel Bay, we were searching for a place that would provide similar serenity, and we found it. From the time we arrived at the Cruz Bay ferry, and were met by Ted the owner, we were treated with enormous hospitality. The space is as beautiful as the pictures, but what cannot be conveyed is the extraordinary privacy, quiet, remarkable gardens (all created by Ted) and the lovely sound of wind chimes. And the views are are spectacular. Everything necessary for a beach vacation is provided for, and the welcome basket as well as well stocked fridge was a generous surprise. This was our first experience with VRBO, as well as renting on st John, and it was completely perfect.
Hard to leave...
Carmel by the Sea was the perfect rental for our wedding vacation. It is difficult to put into words how wonderful this little villa is. Ted is one of the more warm and welcoming people I have ever met, his hospitality knows no bounds! The house with its unique charm was well stocked with everything that we needed and more. As hard as it was to leave the beautiful beaches during the day, my husband and I were always excited to get back to our home away from home to cook dinner and enjoy the views. The meal that Ted prepared for us was the culinary highlight of our trip. Cannot thank you enough, Ted! It was hard to leave but made easier knowing that this is not goodbye, it is see you next time!
Great place to stay
We were very happy with our choice to stay here. The pictures don’t really convey how special this house is. The views are incredible! It’s close enough to Cruz Bay for an easy drive to town for dinner, only 15 minutes. The house has everything you will need for your stay. The house location is perfect for a quiet, private, relaxing stay. The only thing I would change is the mattress, it’s super super soft, I prefer a firm bed. Chef Ted is very laid back and a great host, and he is an excellent cook, ask about him cooking dinner. We will be back.
Absolutely beautiful & peaceful!
This is an absolutely amazing place to stay. Beautiful, relaxing & absolute paradise. It is very private with a breathtaking view. Ted is a very gracious & accommodating host. It is the perfect place to unwind from life and breathe in the island air. We will stay here again!!
Serene Retreat Away from it All
My husband and I just stayed at Carmel by the Sea for a week and the pictures on the site just don't do the description justice, as it is simply gorgeous when you arrive. Ted greeted us at the ferry dock upon arrival and showed us the way to the house and around it. There was water, beer, soda, a fully stocked bar and a welcome basket with fruits, cookies, snacks to have. Perfect after a long's day travel and if you haven't had time to go to the grocery store yet (which are only about 5 minutes from the house). The house itself was beautiful, with all the amenities for a chef's kitchen (pots, pans, knives, etc.), as well as spices that you need, as well as coffee from the famous Cafe Dumond. Ted also grows lots of herbs in his garden, and you are welcome to clip some, as we did! The views of Fish Bay are stunning, and there are numerous areas to enjoy the view, from the seating on the deck, from the bed itself, and the pool deck area. You can eat outside at the large picnic table or the seating by the pool. The house gets nice trade winds, and with the numerous ceiling fans, we never had to turn on the AC. Sleeping with the windows open and waking up to the fresh air and views of Fish Bay were gorgeous. The house also has numerous amenities for the beach - short beach chairs, tall beach chairs, coolers, flotation noodles, snorkel gear, lots of beach towels and sun block, bug spray and allow gel. It was great to not to have rent any of the equipment since it was already at the house. We even had Ted cook for us one night, and his meal was delicious. Between reading books, watching movies, and dining al fresco, Carmel by the Sea provided us the rest and relaxation that we much needed. I will be sure to be recommending this place to any of my friends looking to visit St John.
Walking distance to Reef Bay beach, one the longest beaches on St. John and the most wild. Paddle-boarding in Fish Bay is exceptional due to the low depth of the water and protected bay for beginners; for intermediate and advanced paddle-boarders, the entrance of the bay opens to deeper waters as well as surf and surrounding bays, including Ditlef Point, Klein Bay, Rendezvous Bay, Reef Bay and Cocoloba Cay.
Fish Bay is a neighborhood with other rentals but mostly local houses. The house is very private and the neighborhood is very friendly. Fish Bay is quieter than other popular St. John neighborhoods.
Fish Bay is a great area for walking. One of the highlights of staying in Fish Bay, is a hike to Reef Bay, the Reef Bay Trail and the historic Reef Bay Sugar Mill ruins. Neighboring ruins and trails also include, the Reef Bay Great House and L'Esperance ruins and Trail.
The house property line borders the Virgin Islands National Park and the Fish Bay gut. Also popular, are hikes along the Mollendal gut which is walking distance from the house.
The property is accessed by paved road, a car is necessary. The driveway is island-steep and unpaved.
