House in a natural park right on the seashore, away from tourist crowds

Bedrooms 2
Space 753 sq. ft.
Property type house
Minimum Stay 7 nights

About the property

Private beach access and two beach terraces. Sounds of the sea are included!

Casa Cari is located at the southernmost point of Fuerteventura, by the Faro (lighthouse) de Jandia in the small fishing village of Puerto de la Cruz, also known as Puertito. It is located in a natural park in a small spit surrounded by the sea. The neither the coast nor the interior have been built up, and the thoroughfare between Puertito and Morro Jable is just a wide sand road (about 20 km). Casa Cari is right up close and personal with the sea, and faces the African coast opposite the end of the spit. The view from both terraces, from the living room and the bedrooms is nothing but the sea and the horizon, which rhythmically rustles in front of the house, changing with the strength of its ebbs and flows. It often leaves a small sandy beach in its wake, which sometimes turns into a small dune. Sometimes the house beach can recede from the sea, in which case you'll have watch out for stones and volcanic rocks. Otherwise, you can visit the sandy beach of the town and other bays.

A place for the individualist!

Sand road: The condition of the sand road depends on the municipality. It is graded and fixed at least twice per year.

In the summer, it can be a little bit bumpy because of the high traffic. Since the road goes through a natural preserve, it actually can't be paved.

Guests: Casa Cari is hard to maintain and needs its guests to take loving care of it, for example by paying close attention to water use, or putting a towel or sheet on the loungers before lying their sun-oiled bodies down on them. It's not about being bossy or controlling, we only ask for your cooperation, and are very grateful for it!

About Karin Koberling

Casa Cari has been around for about 40 years now. I completely rebuilt the house, which used to be a fisherman's hut. At that time, there were only three older men and myself in Puertito, with neither water nor electricity. We needed to fill canisters and bring them from 16 km away. In the beginning, we made do with candlelight, then a generator, after which the first solar panels were installed in the southern half of the island. In 1991, Puertito got water and electricity thanks to a wind generator, though it rarely worked...

There was no paved road from Gran Tarajal to Puertito for almost 80 km! It was a constant struggle to build this house with my own work - every nail, every little thing was a cost.

Originally, I had never thought of renting out the house. Then, as my son got to school age and then because of my marriage in Ireland, it became necessary for the exposed location of the house to be protected for its upkeep by renting it out.

Meanwhile, my house's very existence, and that of all the houses in Spain's coastal regions was threatened by the 1988 Ley de Costas with demolition without compensation, even retroactively! We're struggling on this issue with the European Parliament. In this regard, I've been moved by how much my guests have at least symbolically supported me in this struggle! It is a frightfully painful and expensive situation, which pushes my strength to its limits, especially at my age of almost 70 years old!

I always try to keep the house in a very good condition. Even the smallest change or repair is legally subject to the approval of the coastal agency! The government has an embargo against the house - permission is never given, or else it is punished.

All I ask my guests is that they breathe in and enjoy the magic of this little piece of earth.

Karin Koberling purchased this house in 1978

Why Karin Koberling chose Pájara

I was tired of civilization and young when I came to Fuerteventura. I had travelled far and wide and was looking for a place for my soul. Puertito cast its spell on me: it was secluded, by the sea with a horizon stretching into the distance and an undisturbed landscape and people.

The people could be tolerant towards the lone, strange (back then, young and redheaded) woman who was seeking her place in another culture. I felt like a female version of Robinson Crusoe, alone on an island - the dream of my childhood! Yet still close enough to Europe, which I learned to love even more after all my voyages around the world.

My house was perfectly positioned to view the sunset and sunrise right from my home. I thank the universe for making this part of my daily life.

What makes this house unique

One doesn't need much to be happy:

direct contact with the natural expanses, which inspire awe, the vastness of the horizon, the music of the sea and the wind, the wonder of the sunrise and sunset, the unfathomable starry sky, and seeing the starts mirrored in the tidal pools in front of the house in the darkness. You'll be close to the gulls, the sandpipers, and the fishing boats.

If you’re lucky, you'll have some people to share this happiness with!

  • Water is precious! Please use water sparingly and make sure the taps are turned off. Otherwise the water pumps may run hot and the tanks on the roof will run out of water. These are only filled every other day by the town's desalination service. Please turn off taps! Please turn off the water pump after use. Otherwise the pump runs dry! The bathroom can unfortunately only be modernised once we get permission from the coastal protection service! The towels are for use in the house only, not on the beach, and the same goes for the fleece sheets! Please put the fleece sheets on the sofa before use, so that the fabric isn't broken down by sun oil or salt. It would be very helpful for the house's owner if you would wash the fleece sheets in the washing machine for the use of the next guests. Thank you for your support!

Casa Cari is right on the seaside, though because of its unique location is far from the rest of 'civilization'. Not easily obtained. Because of these conditions, we ask that renters please exercise caution when they are in the house. Thank you very much! Fresh buns and bread in Bar El Caletón! The bars/restaurants only serve food until the afternoon. The kitchen is closed in the evening. Casa Cari has a large refrigerator with 3 deep freezer compartments. You can also buy your provisions. Please read further on our homepage! Thank you! Since 1995, any updates and changes in and around the house require the approval of the coastal protection agency. Unfortunately, this is an obligation for me.

Would recommend staying here

  • 5 of 5

You can not help but fall in love with Casa Cari. Property sits looking out to sea, virtually had the beach to ourselves all week, swam every day (recommend beach shoes - rocky underneath). Just behind accommodation is a restaurant which serves great seafood dishes, we ate there most days whilst gazing out to sea (nothing to find two or three hours had passed), you would not know restaurant is there from property as you cannot hear it, none of the obligatory euro pop most places seem to blast out. Puertito had a charm of it's own which we loved, you felt you were experiencing a taste of the real Canaries. Casa Cari was excellent, (pictures of the inside of the property on the website didn't do Casa Cari justice, much brighter than the pictures showed. Karin the owner was great with her communication, anything you needed to know was emailed straight back. If your looking for a relaxing holiday away from the usual tourist crowd, I definitely recommend staying here. Would not hesitate to return.

Herrliches Haus am Meer

  • 5 of 5

It's so quiet you hear the loudness of the sea...

  • 5 of 5

Barely tourists, no supermarkets, no bazaars, no disco, no shops and no boulevard but just sea, raw nature and peace makes this place one of a kind. The house is very complete and has everything you need. No need to take many clothes (or high heels) as there's a laundry machine and the villagers don't care what you're wearing. The terraces protects you mostly from the wind and has sea view till the horizon. Very relaxing and almost private (depending on tide). The owner is very kind and friendly! We have met her last year and had a wonderful time.

Food shopping in Morro Jable (25km). It's recommended to buy some groceries and bottled water on the way from the airport to Puertito. Bread and ice is available in the village.

This place is perfect for relaxing, fishing, walking, running and biking. Visit Cofete with the dark mountains, the long beach and awesome azure sea waves.

This was our 5th visit, we love this place!

  • 3 of 5

Anscheinend sind all meine anderen Gäste blind.

Right by the house!
Car: necessary

Puertito is a small fishing village, which only fills up on weekends, holidays, or the summer break. People come to enjoy the fish, the beach lifestyle, and the local cuisine and joie de vivre in the town’s three bars. Even when the town's usual tranquillity is disturbed on those days, the house is well protected by the craggy cliffs beneath the town. You'll hardly notice the goings-on around town. Shopping/Dining: Puertito doesn't have any stores, though it does have three bars: Bar Tenderete, Bar Punta de Jandia, and Bar El Caletón. You can go for a bite in all three throughout the day. In Bar El Caletón, they have fresh baguettes on offer, as well as ice cream for children of all ages. It's a good idea to make your purchases in Morro Jable. A large supermarket, El Padilla, is available there with provisions from all around the world. Since no public transit goes to Puertito, a rental vehicle is recommended. The thoroughfare from Morro is a public (!) sand road.
