Overview

About the property

Large georgeous farmhouse with a 360 degree mtn view , near attractions

This is a home that was neglected for many years. It’s not the cheapest it’s doesn’t have internet. We looked into it. But the options are limited. Cell phone service is great so you are not entirely off the grid. Being free of electronics has its value.

This recently updated and remodeled farmhouse was once the home of my high school science teacher. I grew up just over the Shenandoah River from this home and recently my husband and I had the opportunity to purchase it and rescue it from many years of abandonment and neglect.

I’ts a home that everything that has been done has been done with love, family and pride. I’ts a story not just a vacation home but home of love, of history some known-some unknown. It’s a home and a home we want to share with those that get it. From the creaky floors to the metal roof that can talk to you on a windy night. To the modern “fixer upper style kitchen and living area” to the formal dining area that we kept intact with a fresh coat of paint. This is a place that is an experience. It’s a home that I wish I had more time to enjoy. It’s a home where my husband stripped the floors until his knees where damaged for life. A home that had the same comforting mountain views I grew up with. The same views I wished upon when I was a love stuck teenager. I always hoped to leave -experience this vast world we live in-but here I am after many great experiences back where I started. I want to share it-not just any house-but The Miller House in honor of a family that also put in the blood, sweat and tears!

From the moment you arrive in the driveway the 360 degree views of the Blue Ridge will bring a peacefulness to your soul. Depending on the time of day of your arrival its possible the neighbors cows may be lounging around near the house (fenced in of course) with a curious welcoming stare.

The house dates back to 1913 with the possibility of the the eastern side of the home dating back to the late 1800's. We have tried to keep the characteristic of the home in place so that you don't feel you are in just another remodeled old house. Keep in mind that it is an old house we decided to keep the old leaded glass windows and the original front door. There are no screens in the windows but we have added air conditioning and central heat so please be respectful and keep front door closed and the windows closed as well.

We did away with 3 small rooms on the first level and added a large modern kitchen and living area. The bar that seats 5 was made of reclaimed wood from the property except the new butcher block top. There is also a table made of driftwood we found in Maine that seats 4. Since we also make this our home from time to time it is well equipped with everything you need for preparing meals. The appliances are new and the range is gas. The sink is from the 1940's and it does feature a garbage disposal and there is a new dishwasher. The wine frig is available if you need it.

The living area has a sofa and 2 side chairs as well as a bench to pull up if needed.

We decided not to add internet so that it could truly be a place to get away from it all. We have many games to enjoy as a family. However the new Samsung TV does pick up CBS and ABC and the local PBS channels. There is a DVD player and movies there as well. The cell phone signal is excellent.

The wood on the walls in the corner of the living room where found in the attic of the house as well as the wood on the wrapped beams. There is a gas fireplace in the living room. .One of my favorite must haves!!

Also on the first floor is a formal dinning room. Please feel free to dine there-especially if you are hosting a Thanksgiving or Christmas or Easter dinner. The fireplace in the dining room is not usable at this time but was supposedly built in the late 1800's and it was built first then the 2 room house was built around it.

You will find a new bathroom at the end of the hallway. It features a tile shower and a stone floor.

Up the stairway which we have been in the process of stripping many layers of paint off of, you will find 3 bedrooms and a sunny hallway great little place to enjoy the views as well as a full added bathroom at the end of the hallway.

The first bedroom on the right has a queen bed, wardrobe, bedside tables and a desk or makeup table. There is a bench at the end of the bed for suitcases and a luggage rack in the room.

Down the hallway is a second bedroom that features a queen 4 post bed and an antique double bed from the late 1800's. There is a custom farm table and a small closet (like they had in old homes) and there is a tv in this room which can also get the same channels as the downstairs tv. Also 2 luggage racks.

The third bedroom features an antique double sized iron bed from the 1930's and a queen bed. . Side tables and a chest and a narrow closet.

In the upstairs bath you will find a custom sink cabinet and barn doors to separate the toilet and bathtub/shower area for privacy. All of which is made from reclaimed wood found in the barn. Also this bathroom features the original small sink and cast iron tub that were originally in the house. They both show sign of aging ( but they are clean).

There are 2 porches so take your pick. In the mornings the front porch is the place to be so that you are out of the morning sun. In the evening the screened porch offers a cooling breeze from the ceiling fans and a place to enjoy a book, and the fireflies in the field at night.

Steps away you will find an outdoor space which features a table that seats 6 and a fire pit with 4 chairs. We provide firewood and kindling. As well as a new gas grill. Star gazing is spectacular on a clear night as we have no street lights and the sound of the coyotes in the distance is so cool!!

The greatest surprise is the "Smokehouse Bar". Yes this used to be the smoke house where hams were hung to smoke. It was falling down when we purchased it and decided it would be a cool place to hang out.

This property was once part of the surrounding farmland that you see on both sides. The Miller family had a dairy operation, raised cattle and chickens and had a large vegetable garden on the property. In the winter back in the early 1900's they even cut ice from the nearby pond and stored it in the ice house to keep their perishables cold. The icehouse is now a great place to chill beside a gas firepit in case its a rainy day or you don't want to hasle with building a wood fire.

There is a workshop, a potting shed, and a milk house on the property. Please feel free to check out and hang out if you like. We also just added a sunset viewing area on the western facing side of the workshop.

The additional buildings and the barn are still a work in progress and we ask our guests to not enter the barn please.

The Shenandoah River is less than a mile away and there you will find a public boat landing. We have inner tubes available for $10.00 each.

Luray Caverns is 15 mins away and the entrance to the Skyline Drive off of 211 east is 50 mins away. Wisteria winery and farm are located about 6 miles from the house outside Stanley. It's a funky little winery with chickens and sheep roaming around and music on certain weekends as well as wine tasting. The town of Luray offers dining experiences and shopping. New Market is across the western mountain range and features the Civil War Battlefield and many antique shops and wineries scattered throughout the small towns. Also Massanutten Resort is about 35 mins away with winter activities and year round pool resort.

Charlottesville Virginia is an hour away. Harrisonburg Virginia and James Madison University is a 45 min drive.

Washington DC is about a 2 hr drive so is certainly an option for a day trip.

Massanutten resort is 30 mins away and features golf, a water park and in season snowmobiling and skiing.

Riverbend Ranch which provides horse back riding is right next door.

Riverbend Road is a community of farms and families most of which are families related to each other and who have lived here for many many years. The traffic is minimal so its a great place to take a walk or go riding bicycles. Nights are quiet except for the sounds of the nightlife and there are no street lights so you can truly enjoy the stars.

The Miller House is now happy to be alive again and we hope your family and friends have the opportunity to experience what its like to live in the country. Once your reservation is made we will be able to share phone contact and provide you with the house door code as well as house rules and information needed to make your home away a pleasant experience.

Our family live across the street and help us manage the property they are always willing to help if you have any concerns, challenges or questions.

We ask that you respect it. Turn off lights when you leave. Make sure the front door is locked unless you are enjoying the front porch. I don’t want to put a modern lock on the front door-so the wind will blow it open.

Take off your shoes before entering😊👍 and follow checkout instructions.

Thanks so much for taking the time to read our story.

About Dawn Pence

I grew up within 1/2 mile of the Miller House and my family live across the street.

My husband is from Newport Beach CA and we now reside full time in Key Largo Fla

My husband owns a boat lift company and also a barge and dock business and I am a flight attendant with Jetblue.

We spend time in the summer and fall at the Miller House.

We have put a lot of time, love, money and energy into the property with hopes of more projects down the road.

I want this stay to be more than a place to sleep-my hopes is that it will be an experience you will cherish always!

Why Dawn Pence chose Stanley

We have really turned this property into the perfect vacation rental for your family. The kitchen is large and well equipped for up to 8 people. The outdoor patio area and the large side yard is great for enjoying the views, the cows, and fireflies at night. A firepit to enjoy the evening and the quiet of the country. There are no street lights to lessen the bright stars.

Quiet, relaxing family trip away from it all

  • 5 of 5

Dawn has done so much to ensure that this place has all you need. The house/property description is very accurate. We came for spring break with 3 teenagers and though the weather didn't cooperate much, we enjoyed the area and our time at the house (ok, the teenagers were slightly tortured by the lack of Wifi -- but that was part of the master plan....). Hiking in Shenandoah National Park was our favorite part of the trip. Amazing views! We also took trips to Charlottesville, the Route 11 potato chip factory, and Luray. We also enjoyed just hanging out at the house. Cooking was easy with a nice layout and great appliances (even a blender) and a grill. We did have one warm, dry night for a campfire with s'mores!

Dawn was very helpful with recommendations on things to do and she even bought a bunch of new board games when I inquired before our arrival if there were some at the house! She was a pleasure to work with. Highly recommended!

Owner's Response: Thanks Diane for taking the time out of your busy life to share your experience. My goal has always been to make staying at The Miller House an all around experience and it sounds like you had a great one. Yes-sometimes getting away from social media is the best way to truly enjoy time with family and friends. I am so glad you had the opportunity to enjoy a campfire and the kitchen was planned to be modern and well equipped without losing the uniqueness of the original farmhouse.-And I love the views out of the french doors when preparing meals and cleaning up. We would love to have you and your family back for a repeat. Dawn

A beautiful, cozy, country getaway

  • 5 of 5

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at this beautiful, well-appointed, and cozy house. We loved cooking meals in the expansive kitchen and reading by the fire, and the views of the surrounding mountains were spectacular. My kids enjoyed walking down to visit the nearby cows and swinging on the tire swing. We were just a short drive into Shenandoah National Park too. We'll definitely be back.

Owner's Response: I really appreciate the review. I know this time of year there are many things on our to do list. Thanks for your suggestion of a toaster -there is one at the house now. We used the griddle on the range for toasting but realized it may not be the best choice for everyone. Glad to hear the beds were comfortable and that it was a great place for your family. We hope you will have the opportunity to retun. Randy and Dawn
