About Debbie Masterson
Our grandfather purchased Poplars cottage back around 1920, when air conditioning was for movie theaters and people flocked to summer vacation homes near the lake to cool off. Grandpa Phil owned it until the mid 1950's when he transferred it to his oldest son, Marshall. When Marshall passed in 2016, he wanted his three boys - Jeffrey, David, and Philip - to keep it in the family. Today, we keep the property both in his honor and as a place to relive some of our fondest childhood memories. With busy schedules that keep us away too much, and costly taxes and upkeep, we decided that the best way to keep our cottage was to share it with others who we hope will find the same magic we've known all these years. Even today, we each find that time slows down when we take a quick weekend to touch up some paint or do some work on our place. It's the quiet at night, punctuated by the sound of waves, set against the sparkling skies even in winter. It's the rawness of the rain when it flies across the lake, drenching everything, but vanishing almost as quickly. There is real magic in this place.

What makes this Cottage unique
There is no single thing about South Haven that makes it unique - it's the combination. It's cooking on the patio and stopping to watch the sunset during summer evenings. It's Sherman's ice cream and the obsession with blueberries. It's the festivals and art shows and fireworks for the Fourth of July. It's even the nosy neighbors who keep a watchful eye on everyone and everything. Sometimes, it's the "youngsters" driving around with their radios blasting far too late at night. Other times, its the people walking down the sidewalk, asking where to stop for food. It's a community of people who all know how special South Haven and its beaches truly are ... and how lucky we are to be able to enjoy them!

Small but mighty
We loved the property. It really is a few steps to the beach like others say. It’s so convenient! The parking is also very close even though there isn’t an actual driveway. That was one thing I couldn’t quite tell from the reviews. I was impressed with the beds, sheets, shower, and overall functionality of the place considering how small it is. The pictures don’t do it justice. I was very happy also with the cleanliness, which always scares me a little when staying in a new place. We had a little confusion with the air temperature settings but got it figured out quickly and Debbie was willing to come by if we needed which was so kind. I felt taken care of here, Debbie thought of everything. We even used the post cards and stamps provided for my children to send their grandparents something from South Haven!
Loved South Haven. It was our first time visiting. Many shops and places to eat. Taste was our favorite. House was lovely and well cared for. We stayed with our adult children. Loved the proximity to the beach. Beds were all very comfortable.
My husband, myself, and three kids enjoyed our stay! The proximity to the beach was perfect!
Perfect cottage for a lake getaway!
We had such an amazing time at Debbie's lake cottage! The cottage comfortably fit our family of seven, and we're definitely thinking about returning next year! :) Debbie was easy to communicate with and was quick to answer any questions we had. The short walk to the beach was so convenient, especially since that's where we spent most of our time! The beach is amazing; white sand, clear water, and not very busy. The house is close enough you can walk back for a quick lunch and nap, then head right back out to the beach. Would absolutely recommend!
Perfect place to stay!!!
Adorable cottage right next to the beach!! It was perfect for our girls trip and we would definitely recommend it!!
Quaint little getaway
This was a cute little house right on North Beach. Perfect location, and the owner and property owner were very accommodating. We had a slight issue checking in (our access code did not work), but someone was at the property within 5 minutes to let us in and resolve the issue. The house was very clean and had everything that we needed. Perfect location! The only thing that would have made our experience better would be an oceanfront view. But, we were only a few steps away from this. Thanks for making our first South Haven stay heavenly! We will be back for more memories! :-)
The Monroe Park area of South Haven has been a tourist destination for over a century. From the incomparable beach to the ease of visiting local restaurants (a short drive or a leisurely walk), South Haven offers a rare retreat from everyday stresses. Perhaps its the quiet of the evenings, or the relaxed attitude of others who visit. Perhaps its just the opportunity to truly step back and enjoy living, the amazing sunsets, the smell of the BBQ, or the warmth of sharing the experience with family and friends. Whatever it is, there's something magic about the experience, and the fact that most others in Monroe Park are also there to relax and unwind only helps. Food varies from inexpensive homestyle to high-end fare. And if you run out of shops to visit, Saugatuck and its art district is a half hour drive up meandering Blue Star Highway, while Holland is just forty minutes.
