A Piece of Myth

As it is the case with most placenames in Greece, Aegina’s name has quite a lot of history behind it: according to the ancient myths, the island took its name from the nymph Aegina, the daughter of the river god Asopos. The legend says that she was so pretty, that Zeus, the father of gods himself, fell in love with her and ran away with her to the island that was then called Oinoi. Zeus and Aegina’s descendants were the first inhabitants of the island, that then founded the powerful kingdom of the Myrmidons.

Today, Aegina is a very popular destination for Greek and foreign tourists alike, due to its proximity to Piraeus/Athens port. Its historical significance and immaculate natural beauty are protected by law and thus the building of contemporary infrastructure has been banned. As a result, the capital, Aegina Town, is a (mostly) car-free, unique mixture of tradition with some hints of modern lifestyle. However, don’t be fooled into thinking that Aegina is coming up short on activities because of its small size and historical status; quite the contrary!

We are only too happy to help you have the best time ever in your vacation. This is why we would like to share with you some of our personal favorite places to be and things to do in the island of Aegina.

Things to do and Excursions in Aegina

Whether it is artistic inspiration, relaxation or vibrant nightlife that you seek, there are plenty of options in the island to make everybody happy. Exploring the historical sites of the main town and port of Aegina will probably be your first experience in the island. After that, you could visit the majestic Agios Nektarios church (one of Aegina’s foremost attractions). If orthodox churches are not your cup of tea, you could always go to the ancient Temple of Aphaia Athena, an architectural jewel among the many treasures from antiquity that dot the island from coast to coast, or the Archaeological Museum of Aegina.

Aegina is also a prime location for short excursions to nearby islands Moni and Agistri.

Moni can be reached by small boats from Perdika fishing village, at the southern tip of the island (15-minute route). What you’ll find in this hidden gem of the Saronic Gulf, is a beautiful beach with pristine waters, teeming with undisturbed wildlife.

Agistri is also a great option for swimming and nature enthusiasts, as it is also lately untouched by touristic development (15-minute route from Aegina port).

Adventurers among you, will be happy to know that the beautiful Poros island is just an hour and 15 min. away from Aegina port. This excursion however might be more time consuming, so perhaps it would be best if you gave it one full day.

Insider Tip: Try to find some time to visit one of the island’s trademark open-air cinemas, which feature all the latest films and blockbusters. The comfy chairs are separated by small round tables and you can easily enjoy your movie while eating your ice cream, souvlaki or the trademarked Aeginian pistachios!

Best Beaches in Aegina

Sea-lovers will certainly love Aegina and the wide selection of beaches that are scattered around the island. There is something to suit every need; from busy beach bars to more secluded coves.

Those who prefer a little bit of socializing along with their sunbathing and relaxation, might want to visit the sandy Sarpas and Klima beautiful beaches (beachbars, sunbeds, umbrellas).

For those enjoying rocky swimming spots, there is a beach mostly known to the locals, at Perdika village, called Glistra.

If adventure is what you seek, the beach of Moni island might be more suitable for you: while there is also an organized beach in the island, you can easily skip that and go spear-fishing or snorkeling along the island coastline.

Other options on the western and south coastline, include the beaches of Aiginitssa and Marathonas, which are both sandy beaches with sun-beds and beachbars, offering a wide array of refreshments and drinks.

On the eastern coastline there are the beaches of Vagia (quiet sandy beach surrounded by pines, including two tavernas), Kamares and Prosinemo (sandy organized beaches).

Teenagers would prefer Sotos bar at Agia Marina (hidden among the rocks right next to Apollo Hotel) where they can jump off the rocks to the crystal clear deep waters, while their parents enjoy their coffee, cocktails and snacks at the bar.

Insider Tip: Take the time to visit the island of Moni. While it might take you a bit off your way, this place of unique natural beauty is well worth the extra trip.

Restaurants and Nightlife

Food connoisseurs will not be disappointed by the range of different options available in the island. In Aiginitissa restaurant, you can enjoy fresh fish and risotto, by the sea.

Stelios Stratigos is located at Marathonas seaside area and offers some traditional dishes, as well as meat pies and fish.

There are also many great (mostly fish and seafood) options in the fishing village of Perdika.
