Overview

About the property

Lovingly restored 2 bedroom town house in historic centre, sleeps 4

This lovely 'cielo-terra' (heaven-to-earth) house is the ideal base for a holiday in the green and culturally rich heart of Italy. You can enjoy the slow pace of life in this stunning Tuscan town, explore its artistic heritage (the birthplace of the painter Piero della Francesca) or venture further afield by car, train, bike or foot to discover the natural, architectural, cultural and gastronomic delights of the area. The house is in Sansepolcro's historic centre, a stone's throw from the main square. It has recently been lovingly redecorated, retaining original wooden beams, and is tastefully and comfortably furnished, with natural fibre carpet throughout. The three-floor layout is typical of local old-town houses. The ground floor comprises a large garage/utility space. The living room (boasting a large, functioning stone fireplace), dining room and kitchen are on the open-plan first floor, while the two bedrooms (one double, one twin) and the bathroom are on the second floor.

Activities beyond Sansepolcro: Sansepolcro is 15km from Citta di Castello, the other key walled town of the Upper Tiber Valley.

There are many nearby 'borgos', villages, towns, monasteries and sanctuaries that are worth a visit, while, on a 360 degree radius, many key central Italian cities and sites are easy day trips, including Florence (1.5 hours by car), Perugia (45 mins), Arezzo (40 mins), Assisi and Spello (1 hour), Spoleto (1.5 hours), Urbino (1 hour 15 mins), Gubbio (1 hour). Rome takes a little under 3 hours by car

In addition to sightseeing in Sansepolcro and beyond, the town's verdant position in the Tiber River valley just below the Appenine mountains makes it a popular base for all kinds of outdoor activity holidays, such as walking, hiking, cycling, mountain-biking, canoeing and fishing (both activities possible in/on the Tiber or the picturesque man-made Montedoglio Lake) and horse-riding.

Getting to Sansepolcro: Sansepolcro can be reached by car, train or coach. The nearest international airport is at Perugia, about 45 minutes drive away, with Ryan Air flights to London Stansted and shuttles to Milan. Other useful airports are Rome (Fiumincino, Ciampino), Pisa, Bologna, Florence and Ancona, ranging from 1.5 to 2.5 hours by car. Sansepolcro's train station links by local line to Perugia, and from there to the national network. Another key hub is Arezzo, 40km away and reachable by taxi or bus. Car hire is not essential for a holiday here.

Beautiful property, beautiful stay!

  • 5 of 5

Our family (4 people) rented this property during the month of December. This was our first time visiting Sansepolcro and our stay was made extra special by staying at this house. The apartment is indeed charming and it has been beautifully restored. It is extremely clean and well kept. It is off the main street in Sansepolcro and you can walk anywhere from there. Parking on the street is possible but our car was a little "too big" for the narrow street so we parked at the public parking lot nearby and walked to the house. The town is absolutely safe. The property owner, Tiffany, was very quick to respond to our many questions and provided us with lots of extra information about the property, town and travel around the area. We are definitely making plans to stay here again! Thank you Tiffany for everything!

I LOVED this place

  • 4 of 5

We loved this home!! The kitchen was wonderful, table seating plentiful, as we had dinner guests. I love the steps and laundry room. The second bathroom was very handy. I love this town and the neighbors were so much fun. Bedding was great, and owner was very understanding with us. Maybe it's just August, but there was always something going on in town. We had a blast. Bedroom fan was great. A second fan would be my only suggestion for smaller bedroom. The restaurants in the town are amazing, along with the bakery and the many grocery stores close by. I'd love to go back again. Totally agree with other reviews.

Comfortable and clean apartment

  • 4 of 5

The apartment was very clean and well maintained. The landlady is very friendly and helpful and considerate enough to leave information about the area and surrounding areas which was very handy. Sansepolcro is a small township and a great place to visit if you are looking to get away from big cities and crowds. The flat is conveniently located to the main square where the shops and restaurants are is only a short walk from the station.

Only thing to note is that public transport in the Tuscany region isn't the best and its best to hire a car.

A very special place

  • 5 of 5

Lovely house in a quiet street. Just as described, in impeccable condition with everything in good working order. We agree with the owner - San Sepolcro is a very attractive small town with excellent shops and restaurants and, in spite of the of Piero della Francesca connection, is very 'untouristy'. It's a perfect centre for exploring Tuscany, Umbria and The Marches. We really enjoyed our visit and will take the next opportunity we can to return.

Sansepolcro, located right on the border with Umbria and not far from Le Marche, is a beautifully preserved walled Tuscan town. It is most famous as the birthplace of the painter Piero della Francesca (1416-1492) and the town's impressive Museo Civico houses - among many other works of art - his masterpiece, La Resurrezione (dubbed by Aldous Huxley 'the best painting in the world'). That painting alone makes Sansepolcro worth a visit, but the town itself will not disappoint.

Within its ancient walls, the old town maintains a medieval structure but its architecture is enriched by Renaissance and Baroque elements which stand shoulder to shoulder along the elegant main 'corso'. Architectural highlights include the Romanesque cathedral and Palazzo della Laudi, which overlook the handsome main square.

Sansepolcro is a prosperous and cultured town, a fact reflected in the quality of its shops and in the high standard of the cuisine in the many excellent local restaurants.

Golf: Fattoria Caldese is a golf club and resort less than 15 minutes drive from Sansepolcro, just outside Città di Castello.

Ski: It is possible to ski at Monte Nerone, an 1,500m Apennine mountain just over one hour's drive from Sansepolcro. The mountain has one ski lift servicing 5 blue and red pistes as well as a convivial and well-run chalet with a bar and restaurant with good hearty food cooked fresh in the kitchen over an open fire by a group of mountain ladies. There is also a glowing stove and plenty of hot mulled wine to be had at the bar. Monte Nerone may not be quite Cortina, but it makes for a fun day trip.

Skis can be hired at Scarselli Sport in Città di Castello, or Pupita Sport in Piobbico at the base of the mountain.
