About Andrew Paxton

After 30+ years living and working in England, Belgium and Virginia, USA, I have moved home to Scotland. I was born in Perth and was a student in Edinburgh.

I love travelling around the world, walking, skiing and eating out. My two sons live in the USA and I take every opportunity to meet up with them, wherever in the world works.

By sharing our apartment, I want others to fall in love with Scotland and Edinburgh. We aim to provide the best Scottish hospitality Edinburgh can offer, want it to be a home away from home and have everything you need to make your stay very comfortable.

Andrew Paxton purchased this apartment in 2012

Why Andrew Paxton chose Haymarket

We loved the central location in the West End of the city, easy walking distance to everything Edinburgh has to offer and access to the wonderful public transport. The finish of the listed building and apartment is beautiful - completed late 2012.

What makes this apartment unique

We aim to provide the best Scottish Hospitality Edinburgh can offer. We want it to be a home from home (although we know it is much smaller than American standards) with everything you need to make your stay very comfortable. Guestbook comments from the owner

We had a fantastic week in Edinburgh at this lovely apartment. Every comfort, fresh clean and modern. Great location for EdFest! Close enough to walk to all major venues, yet quiet at night (bedrooms at back which helps). Thanks Margaret and Karen for making us so welcome and well-informed! Can't wait to return

This was the first time I have rented an apartment for a holiday. I have to say, it did not disappoint at all! Lovely apartment, worked very well for our needs. The location is very convenient. There is a bus/tram stop just outside the door, and for a taxi, the Waldorf just up the block always has a cab waiting. The Prince Street gardens, Waverley train station, tour bus location, lovely shops all in a 1-5 min(s) walk. The old town is a short cab drive away, and could be walkable too. The gastropub next-door is friendly and the food is pretty decent. It was a great place to watch the World Cup matches.

We had very good communication with the owner before our trip. Karen, the lovely property manager, was there upon our arrival and showed us around and made sure we had everything we needed. They owner has a nice supply of electrical converters and chargers for phones etc... this came in very handy and was very much appreciated as I accidentally left my bag of converters at home.

The one caveat if you travel with a lot of luggage, there is a long staircase leading up to the apartment. it was manageable, but just an FYI. I have hard case luggage so I flip it on the side and slide it up or down, but for some that may not be able to do heavy lifting, it could be a challenge.

Owner's Response: As highlighted, the location is perfect for public transport, and yet also an easy walk to the main tourist sights in the centre. The neighbouring Grosvenor Bar offers typical pub fare and is certainly handy. The apartment is on the first floor (US second floor) and as it is an old building, I am afraid no elevator. The staircase is straight, wide and has handrails on both sides. There are 27 steps including 2 landings, which reflects the high ceilings of the building. Unfortunately there is nothing we can do to make it easier for our guests.

Spacious, comfortable, convenient, home away from home

  • 5 of 5

This well-stocked and comfortable flat is ideally located for a trip to Edinburgh, and makes for a great home-base for trips out of the city. Shandwick bus stop is just outside the front door (watch carefully, or speak to the busdriver). Easy walk to Waverly and Haymarket train stations, Princes Street Gardens, Edinburgh Castle, and other popular downtown sights. Also close by is Water of Leith Walkway, a quiet footpath oasis that stretches from Balerno to Leith (some 12mi/19km). Entry closest to the flat is a short walk up Queensferry Street. Don't miss this lovely mini-break from fellow tourists; thank me later.

Communication with Andrew was clear and prompt; Karen was a lifesaver when she realized we must have turned the wrong way off the wrong bus stop and called on our cell before we got too far afield. Grocery stores next door and across the street made meal prep a breeze. Two couples were very comfortable for a whole week without tripping over each other. We highly recommend!

👍 was wonderful

  • 5 of 5

It is well located apartment within walking of most sites and services. The rooms are a good size and well maintained. The kitchen contains all modern equipment. The baths were a nice size. The beds were quite comfortable. We felt very safe and secure in this area. There were many choices to dine in the area.

Great apartment in excellent location. Being so close to tourist sites and stores was perfect. Walked everywhere or took hop on hop off bus. Everything we needed was provided.

Lovely apartment, excellent location

  • 5 of 5

We booked the apartment based mainly on past reviews, all of which were good, but accurate.

The location could not be better - easy access from airport on public transport, but everything else within walking distance.

The apartment itself was lovely, spotlessly clean (& I’m fussy!), everything you need, handy welcome pack & everything else of good standard and comfortable. Karen met us on arrival which was nice & she made sure we were ok with everything.

I’d definitely stay here again if visiting.

Apart from the main attractions in the city centre,I’d recommend getting a bus to Royal Yacht Britannia which is well worth the visit and we also went into parliament (mainly for a drink & loo stop!) but got a 15 minute talk about the building and how Scottish parliament works and a look round the debating chamber, very interesting.

Also climbed Arthur’s Seat - worth it but you need good footwear & a bottle of water and decent/ dry weather.

All in all, a great few days and the lovely apartment really made the weekend.
